Thank God for this. Whenever I'm in the ladies' room at work and the cleaning ladies are conversing in Spanish, I'm paranoid they're talking about my bathroom habits.

Do they have a reason to do so? :o

(The you knew it was coming answer)

I don't know, they keep saying Olor! and then giggling.

Now I'm gonna report them.

LMAO Jenn!!!! :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I never said my spelling was perfect!

I like the pointless u's though, very colourful :D

I think this is a Republican 'feel good' bill. It panders to those who want their representatives to take a 'tough' stance and preserve America for the Americans (whatever the hell that's supposed to mean) while not actually doing anything substantial.

Meanwhile, vives les differences...whever one might find them.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Uh-oh.... have you checked my Lady Heather is a Commie Website Steven?????

No, wait, it's in French - you can't read it. Too bad ;)

Does it require a credit card and age verification?

For you brother we could make an exception, but since vous ne comprenez pas le français it would be frustrating for you ..... :(

I don't think people should speak only english, after all, the more languages you speak more able to communicate you are. But that you must also speak english then I agree.

I wouldn't like to go places in Brazil where people that work there don't speak portuguese, with some exceptions. Like when I was taking english classes, there were some teachers that spoke no portuguese, but it was an english only school, you were not supposed to speak portuguese to teach people to speak english.

Same should apply here.

My American friend lives in Rome & speaks fluent Italian. Yet at her ESL school there - where she teaches English - they cannot speak Italian.

I agree wholeheartedly. We have a 12% International Student population (which may not seem like much, but we have 1000 students) at my school. We do not allow them to speak their native language in class.

I agree. I took my son and a friend with me to Kazan' last year. I made them learn some Russian before they went. I made it clear, you are a guest in this country. No one is going to be happy if you display a smug, "I'm an American" attitude. I said, speaking a little Russian, even poorly pronouced, will open doors. Refusing to make the attempt will generate the opposite response. I am more than happy to help someone who tries to speak English with me a whole lot quicker then the "no hablo" type. This is why, I consider anyone wanting to live and work here needs to learn English. We don't need to cater to your special needs with multilingual signs.

I agree that if you are visiting or living in a country you should make the effort to speak the native language. We should expect and demand the same from people wanting to live and work here.

My German is atrocious, yet people appreciated it and even taught me correct words or usage. My Spanish is not atrocious, but still when I was in South America, even if I screwed up, people were more willing to help me, or even speak to me in broken English. I was amazed at their willingness, but I also thought that it was job as a visitor to attempt to use their language.

I imagine that most of us respect the languages, cultures, and traditions of other people or we wouldn't be on a family immigration forum to begin with. But that doesn't make us racist if we think that people who work here should speak English....

It is long overdue. The language we speak in the United States is English. It is the language of international business. If you want to live in America and you want to do business then you must learn and speak English. If you want to speak any other language on your own time please feel free. But when you are at work and you are communicating with others SPEAK ENGLISH! To have it any other way is to slow the development of the immigrant to assimilate into American society. If you want to live in America you must assimilate into our culture. It is not up to us to cater to you! If I lived in another country I would speak their language.

I second the motion for the bill!

P.S. it is one of the most descriptive languages on the planet. More words than any other.

I think that this bill is plain old BS rooted in ignorance and a careless attempt for Republilocos to gain both "common sense" US votes that believe there is no point to using other languages at work in this country (but hey... *who cares*) as well as those more right wing anti-immigrant votes to be made that could go a little farther away from helping more mainstream Republicans next November.

Yes, I agree that Ingles should be the lingua franca of the USA. It is and it will continue to be so.

Jumping the gun to try to regulate how people communicate at work pushes the line of what a population allows itself to do at any given time. Laws like these during the Nazi regime tended to snowball into wider, anti-this, anti-that legal umbrellas that ultimately cast a wide fishing net for lots more than what was started with. In this country, under the current mist of fear that is thankfully starting to diminish, laws like this bill don't have such an easy time in garnering support since people are not as easily led over the hill, but there still are many that fall in the more "common sense" of things and lend ignorance and plain old time-wasters a bountiful ear.

If enough dedication and political will was spent in strengthening US citizens intelligence, diminishing the need for outsourcing labor in the form of more H1 visas (no offense, I work with 3 of them), and adequately funding the public education system in this country, this silly bill would not even be an issue. But since ignorance is easier to manage than an intelligent population, ignorance will continue to be the determining factor in US politics.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Well since we fund education at 130% of the what the next highest country does then that can't be it. .......Ummm, maybe it is the teachers unions that have something to do with it. Democrats like the people uneducated because they are easier to control that way. It is easier to get a public school system, NEA teacher union, socialist indoctruinated student that has only been taught to feel and never to critically think to follow people that always play on his emotions. Then to get one to follow the intellectual arguments put forth by the Republicans.

If you study the history of economics you will see that the policies of the Democrats have been failure after failure. From the "New Deal" which gave us this rip off known as Social security and prolonged the Great Depression by 5 years at least.

To LBJ'S " War on Poverty" which stole 5+ trillion dollars from the people who rightly earned it to people that did not. In the process absolutely devastating the black population by removing the father from the household and skyrocketing unwed motherhood. While the percentage of people still in poverty is the same.

To the abysmal failures of the Cater Administration with interest rates so high that home ownership was an absolute pipe dream and to quote his own words "the country was in a malaise". Also his handling of international affairs is one of the main causes of the terrorist aggression towards the United States. Pacifism one means millions of people die instead of only a few.

To the Clinton Administration who did nothing to ever upset anyone. If it hurt his poll numbers then it was not done. Consensus is the absence of leadership! The best thing that ever happened to Bill Clinton was that he lost the Congress to the Republicans. They reformed all the ####### that had been festering for so long that the stock market soared, the economy soared and the standard of living soared. While Bill Clinton being the weak scum bag he is had no trouble taking credit for the success of all the things that he tried to block 2 and 3 times before. i. e. Welfare Reform... The good economy....The stock market. Letting people bomb our embassies, our ships, our buildings, while doing nothing to protect the country. Oh that's right he cut the military not strengthening it. Did you know that during John F. Kennedy's presidency the military budget was 40% of the GDP. Now it is 4 or 5% of GDP.

I think history and economics were the first subjects left out of the new curriculum of the socialist American school system!
