IRS Apologizes for Extra Scrutiny of Anti-Tax Groups

Lois Lerner, the IRSs director of exempt organizations, said career employees singled out the groups for further examination based solely on their names, not their applications.

They didnt do it correctly, Lerner said today at a conference of tax lawyers in Washington. We would like to apologize for that.

A national anti-tax Tea Party group today rejected Lerners apology.

The IRS has demonstrated the most disturbing, illegal and outrageous abuse of government power, said Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, said in an e-mailed statement. This deliberate targeting and harassment of Tea Party groups reaches a new low in illegal activity and overreach.

The IRS is under pressure from Senate Democrats and watchdog groups to crack down on spending by such nonprofit groups. Senator Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, said in an interview last month that he would hold hearings on why nonprofit groups are being allowed to spend their money on elections.

Do cops apologize for that?

They usually do ! After the ACLU sues them and their respective department!

Depends whether or not they found anything. So, in this case, we can assume the IRS didn't find anything untoward in their investigation.

I suspect that happens from time to time. You know, where there are red flags but that's it.

See, the IRS is proactive about it. Saving the taxpayer money by avoiding being sued by the ACLU.

I think they are just trying to defuse the potential powder keg this could become! People may think the chosen one may have ordered this special scrutiny as payback to republicans and tea-party members for daring to question his glorious reign! I am pretty sure the current admin does not want anymore investigations that could undermine their credibility further and question the administration's use or non-use of federal agencies for political gain.

The people that think that can't be helped anyways. To them, it matters none what does and doesn't happen, what the executive or any government agency does or doesn't do. To them, Obama is, has been and always will be a foreign agent of non-Christian faith that is trying to destroy this country. Yes, these people are that ill in their heads.

The OP already notes the Democrats in the Senate have been pressuring the IRS to investigate non-profit groups, specifically outside groups that can spend money without disclosing the source of that money, as a way to get around the decisions by the Supreme Court that the First Amendment is still in effect, that money equals free speech, that political speech is protected speech, that people have the right to assemble and petition their government for grievances, and that right shall not be infringed, either as individuals, or as a group. Would that be the same Democrats that passed Obamacare without reading it?
