Well, hello there! Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! It's been awhile since I posted here... Got my 10-year GC back in Oct and have been enjoying Immigration-free life -- until I remember about the Dual Citizenship. A friend of mine is in the process of applying for Naturalization (she'll have her Bio this Tues). Her Philippine passport has been expired for almost 2 years now and thinking about going to Chicago to renew it. As I understand it, you need to renew your passport before you become a Naturalized U.S. Citizen, otherwise, they (Philippine Consulate) will not allow you to renew it unless you do Dual Citizenship. The renewal of passport and re-acquisition of Filipino Citizenship will both require a trip to Chicago... So my question is, can she just wait till she gets her U.S. Citizenship, then go to Chicago to re-acquire Filipino Citizenship and then at the same time renew her passport? She wants to save a trip there since she's working and hard for her to take a day off.

on the contrary, one of the requirements for filipinos who want dual citizenship is their certificate of naturalization, which means your friends needs to get naturalized first before she can apply for dual citizenship. check this webpage for the complete info

How about if she didn't want to do dual citizenship? Can she just renew her Philippine passport and not declare that she's naturalized?

Yes she can do this ...

However she will not be able to travel outside the country until she has her U.S. passport or until she re-acquires Filipino citizenship and gets her new Philippines passport ...

She is not eligible for a Philippines passport if she is a U.S. citizen and does not re-acquire Philippines citizenship ...

She is not eligible for a Philippines passport if she is a U.S. citizen and does not re-acquire Philippines citizenship ...

yes she still is eligible for a phil. passport.

if she has not yet apply for citizenship, it is assumed that she'll stay a legal permanent resident, who has the prerogative to stay an LPR (renew after every 10yrs) or apply for naturalization whenever she wants

all she has to do then is renew her expired passport.

Once ur friend become naturalize,she is no longer a filipino citizen and she can't renew her PI passport,unless she will apply for re-acquisition to become dual-citizen.Please check the link below.

Actually what she's curious about is if she can renew her passport without letting the Phil. Consulate that she's already a U.S. citizen... More of like making them think that she's still a GC-holder.

this is why upon US naturalization, one is not asked to surrender his philippine passport...

...because the US does not have any laws pertaining to dual citizenship

so how does it go with regards to the phil. passport after you are naturalized, do you have to just apply to reacquire Phil. citizenship and use/retain or keep your current passport, or get another one? since that space of time between being naturalized and application for dual citizenship, you basically are not entitled to the Phil. passport anymore..

I know this is an old thread, but my question is, how would the Philippines government ever know? Seems like a big waste of time to 'retain' something you've never lost....

When she obtains US citizenship they will take her green card. That means she can no longer enter the US on a passport from the Philippines. She can't leave the country on a filipino passport and return on a US passport. When she scans her US passport, the system would know she never left the country using it.

Just opening yourself up to a bunch of issues that no one really wants.
