Comments : What a long, frustrating, wasteful process. This could be made so much more simpler, transparent, and efficient. And why so many fees for each successive step (with no possibility of refund if the visa is denied). It is willfully, deliberately confusing and bureaucratic, to the point where even the most law-abiding foreigner who has legitimate interest in being in America (say, the relative of a US citizen) is discouraged from participating in the process.

Embassy Review : Our interview was scheduled for 9:30 am on a Monday. We arrived early as I was expecting there to be a line outside the embassy (as there usually is), but there was no line. I guess the embassy is limiting its services due to covid, and perhaps the number of people seeking visas is way down as well. In any event, we were so early we had to wait outside about 15 minutes, then we breezed through the security gate. Once inside we waited maybe 5 minutes before we were called to the window to present our documents. They didn't ask for tax documents or any of the items I had brought that prove domicile. The only thing they requested was birth certificate (koseki tohon), vaccination documents from the hospital where the medical check was performed, and I had to provide documents that show my assets in the US. After we submitted the documents we had to wait another 10 minutes or so, then we were called to provide fingerprints. Then a further 10-15 minutes and we were called to the window for the interview. I was asked to sit down while my wife did the interview by herself. The agent asked a number of questions about the family, and then I was called to the interview window, and the agent explained to us that the interview was completed, but we could not get our visa granted until the embassy received the medical exam results from the hospital. For some reason there was some some technical problem that prohibited the embassy from viewing the data sent by the hospital. The embassy assured us that everything would be resolved soon, and they kept my wife's passport. We received the passport with the visa in it on December 23rd.
