Consulate Review: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Review Topic: IR-5 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : July 21, 2017
Embassy Review : My parents had their interview today and had a great experience at RDJ consulate. Their appointment was scheduled for 9:20am and they arrived there around 8:30am. They had to wait their scheduled time in order to go inside of the consulate. The consulate staff were very friendly and willing to help anyone that had questions!

We had a friend accompanied my parents to the consulate to help them out with and she was allowed to go in with them. I was really surprised to hear the security guard allowed her in since she did not have an appointment. She just told the security guard that my parents needed her help with organizing their documents. Our friend helped my parents in all the steps, except during the brief interview with the consulate officer.

The famous Leonardo was there and was answering people's questions. My parents said he was very polite and patient. He gave my parents a form to complete with their and mine personal information ,and a list with the order that they need to put their document in.

After 30 minutes of wait, my parents were called to be interviewed by a very young Consulate Officer. He was also very polite and asked my parents to clarify why they have had tourist visa denied in the past. My mother explained that the reason given to them was that they did not have strong ties to Brazil. He questioned her: "So, you've had your visa denied 5 times, right?" She said: "No, I have my visa denied 4 times and my husband 3 times". I think the officer thought she was going to agree with his statement or to see if she was going to lie about it. The officer looked and smiled at my parents and said "Yes, you are right. Today, is a different story and you will be approving your visa", and that they were going to receive their passport within 3 weeks in the mail. My dad asked him if they had to pay for the carrier service, and the officer said that they did not have to pay anything.

The whole interview process was painless and very straight forward.

My parents left the consulate really happy and extremely surprised with the great customer service staff provided at RDJ. They've had horrible experiences at the Embassy in Brasilia in the past and was very happy to see that staff at RDJ treat people with respect and dignity.

POE Review: Los Angeles
Event Description
Entry Date : 2017-11-18
Embassy Review : I was actually accompanying my parents who was traveling on a IR5 visa. I was afraid that I wasn't going to be able to stay in the visitor line with my parents, but the officer was kind enough and allowed me to stay in the visitor line, instead of the citizens line.. We handled him all the paperwork and he greeted us. He was very polite and efficient. He took my parents pictures and finger prints and confirmed the address where the green cards would be mailed. He gave us the sealed envelops and asked us to proceed to a secondary inspection to finalize the admission process. We got to the room and nobody was there. After three minutes, two officers came and asked for my parents' passports and envelops. They came back within 5 minutes with a stamp in the passports and a letter stating that they should receive their green card within 3-6 months. One of the officers stated that my parents were now legal residences of the USA and that the stamp in the passport give them the permission to work and travel abroad until they receive the green card. The officer smiled and welcomed us to the United State. It was a great experience and no harassment at all.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
