I went from the U.S. to pick up my wife (then fiancée) in Quebec City by car. We returned to the U.S. together via Lansdowne, ON/Alexandria Bay, NY. The formalities took some time, although it went very smoothly. |

crossed in Houlton, ME on probably the coldest day ever. The border guards are not mean, but are very serious. They didn't know what they were doing as far as activating the visa, but got it done but checking their instructions with 4 other people. but they knew how to import a car, so got that done too. they didn't look in the uhaul, but we did have a list of everything in it. |

Thousand Islands crossing. Primary screening officer offered his congratulations. Parked car in lane at secondary. Officer there offered her congratulations as well. All were very friendly. Officer Vetter trained another officer on how to process the CR-1. Joked around a lot about whether we were sure we wanted to go through with it. Did not need xray at all at interview or POE. Officer joked about how others bring theirs. Stamped passport and said we were all set. No welcome to America but we didn't care. 0 hassle factor and friendly was good enough in our book! |

We crossed at Emerson/Pembina (Manitoba/North Dakota). It was really easy for us.
We drove into our lane at the crossing and explained what we were doing, the guy typed information into his computer and then chatted with us (I think he was waiting for information on his computer), he asked how we had met and what the process had been like for us...very friendly. He then waved us into the parking lot and told us to go into the building.
We sat and waited a couple of minutes until the officer called us up. It was his first K-1 visa, so he had to look everything up (I saw that his book said NOT to issue a temp EAD...I asked anyway, but he didn't do it). He was very friendly and chatted with us while he got everything done. The officer tried to give us our file with all of the original information in it. I told him that I thought he was supposed to keep it and he went to ask another officer...which was fun because it gave us a few minutes to look through it and see what was there. ;) Nothing interesting in there, though...but I got to see the approval stamp which was nice to actually see after the whole process. :) Dennis' car was packed full, but they didn't ask about it or look into it.
It took about 45 minutes total, then he congratulated us on our upcoming marriage and told us we could enter the US. |
