The POE process was pretty easy at JFK. It took about 2 hours but, only because the officer went on break halfway through Bhupi's processing. They asked very few questions mostly basic: Bhupi's parents names, whether or not he was married, and where he was coming from. Do not be alarmed if you are waiting for your fiance for a long time at the airport - the K1 visas are processed differently than tourist visas, etc so, they tend to take longer. Overall, it was a very easy experience. |

Awful! Horrible! A real nightmare!
When we got off the plane, all visitors were kept in a corridor for at least 10 minutes and we had no idea why. Then, when they let us go I understood. There was at least 400 people packed like sardines in lines. Officers yelled non-stop saying "Step up! Step up! Use the space!" and this way my nose was on the neck of the person ahead of me. There was no oxygen in the room at all. Officers were trying to make things move faster and after an hour they opened more lines and started moving us to new lines. This way I was far away again :/ Another hour passed when I finally was next in the long line to go to one of the Customs officers. AND ONLY THEN SOMEBODY NOTICED MY YELLOW ENVELOPE and told me to go SOMEWHERE ELSE. I was sent to a separate room. There were only two workers and one person. One officer took my envelope and told me to take a seat. He opened it, started to type data into computer, called me to take my fingerprints and told me to go sit again. He continued typing on the computer. After 2 minutes called me to take back my passport and said "You have 90 days to get married. Leave through this door". I thanked and turned around to pick up my purse and my carry on luggage. When I was in the door he called me back again to double check the address on the customs declaration and only then asked me 2 questions: "So how long do you know this person?" (meaning my Fiance!) and "Where is this town of A....t?". That's it! All this time the man didn't even look at me and had a face expression like I was some s**t to him. Sorry to say so, but it's true. In the US people smile at you everywhere, but not this time. I was glad he was quick and I could finally leave after having wasted 2 hours in the line!! Then I discovered one of my suitcases (a brand new one) was broken and that a cart for luggage that is free for your usage at every airport in the entire world cost $5 at JFK! I STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO AVOID THIS POE! |

Immigration officer was courteous and humorous. Everything was simple and quick, took all but 5 minutes.
(What we didn't know and weren't asked about was the payment of the immigration fee to get the actual green card produced. We found out later when nothing arrived in the projected time and called USCIS. SSN was also not produced automatically as requested and offered on form and we had to visit the social security office in person to get things on the way. Both cards have since arrived.) |
