Our experience with the Customs/Immigration officers was swift and pleasant. It was asimply quick as any transaction I've had coming back to the states from a foreign country. They opened his packet, made a comment on how lucky we must be to have made it through the process so quickly, and sent us to the last immigration stop before we could re-check our bags. The fact that I was in uniform (coming straight from my deployment to travel with him) may have given us the edge with the officers...maybe.

We sat in this room for about 30 mins or so while other passengers were being interviewed on their stay. (Just a note, we could overhear one officer questioning a gentleman who had apparently entered on a work visa. The officer was seriously grilling him, basically asking him what his entire life plan was while in the US and the guy didn't seem to have the answers the officer was looking for. He was with two other gentleman all their for the same reason I suppose and I didn't see any of them get through, and I saw one get taken into another back room, which he never came out during our time there. Make sure you know your stuff, what you're doing and what your plan is especially on a work visa.)

After witnessing that, we were prepared for a similar grilling by the time they called us up. However, they didn't ask us anything at all besides small talk about my deployment, our plans now that we're finally together, and the attending officer even asked how our process was overall. He did some stamping, typing, stamped his visa for the 1 year approval and told us his residency card would come in the mail anytime between 1-6 months, and to call if it hadn't gotten there in 6. (We vacationed until 9 Feb and the card was in the mail around the 12th).

And that was it. He bid us farewell, we returned it, and we re-checked our bags for our next flight. It was amazing and the only part of the entire process that I can say didn't make me want to pull my hair out!

Good luck! Just be honest, relaxed and truthful. You'll be fine!

I accompanied my husband who was the beneficiary. We went through the regular customs line for non-US citizens (even though I am a US citizen). The officer was very friendly, entered a few things on the computer, then took my husbands packet and gave him a number. After picking up our bags at baggage claim, we gave the number to one of the officers who checks everything before you enter the regular part of the airport. He told us to go into the secondary screening area.

In the secondary area, we passed by the officer who we could see had my husband's packet. He directed us into a waiting room where we waited for about 20 minutes. There was only one other person waiting (she came after us).

The officer then came and got us, gave my husband's passport back with the stamp, explained it was valid for a year, and was extremely nice when I had a few questions about social security number, etc.

All in all, a really easy process! So glad we went through Charlotte. Not as busy as other customs and everyone was extremely friendly!

Previously travelling on ESTA I'd had a bit of a finger wagging at Charlotte about spending too much time in the US (which was ridiculous as I'd spent around 1 month out of the previous 7 there) so I did my further trips via Atlanta while under ESTA.

For my wedding the best ticket price was via Charlotte and I knew that armed with my shiny new k1 visa, I'd get no problems.

I waved my big white envelope around as some had suggested while waiting at immigration in the hope it would be recognised and I'd be plucked from the line, but when I said "k1" when asked what I was travelling on, they just directed me to the ESTA line. Eventually at the desk I presented my passport and the big white envelope and informed the officer I was travelling under a k1. He opened the envelope and had a quick look through, checked my passport and did the electronic finger print thing. He then said he'd hold onto my passport and the paper work, and gave me a laminated card with the number 1 on it and told me to proceed through customs, collect my bag, and then to show my laminated card when exiting customs.

I did as instructed and the customs man directed me to a waiting area. There was no one else waiting. I waited about 25 minutes and then someone showed up with my passport and said "here you go". I said "I'm all done" and he said "yes". That was it - no ceremony, no grand welcome to the USA, but I didn't care, because I knew that after my short connecting flight I'd be with the love of my life, this time for good.

The entry went very smoothly. My fiance stood in the visa line, and had his initial screening and fingerprints taken by a friendly CBP officer who spoke good Spanish (my fiance speaks Portuguese, but he understood the officer). My fiance got a plastic card with a number on it, collected his luggage, and then went to the secondary interview. He was just asked some basic identification questions and reminded that he needs to get married within 90 days. The entire process including waiting in line took about an hour and a half. All of the CBP personnel were friendly and courteous.

After a lovely half empty flight from Heathrow to Charlotte, I left the plane with my Passport and sealed envelope clutched tightly in my hand. I joined the general queue for ESTA and VISAs. When I got to the front of the queue I showed the guy my K1 visa and he then pointed me to a clear line. Walked up to the desk and gave the officer my passport and told him that I had a sealed envelope to pass on. He then took my fingerprints and took my photo. He advised that he doesn't deal with the paperwork so I need to go and collect my baggage and then proceed on to the secondary interview area. He gave me a plastic number to show the next officer. I then waited for my bags hoping that the next part wouldn't be a problem. Saw the sign for secondary interview and as soon as I walked round the corner the officer called my name. He asked me if we'd set a wedding date yet, what my fiance's name is and will he be waiting in arrivals for me. I gave the answers and then he stamped my forms and sent me on my way. It was the best feeling to walk through arrivals and see my fiance and get a very big hug. The officers weren't exactly friendly but it was ok.
