Previously travelling on ESTA I'd had a bit of a finger wagging at Charlotte about spending too much time in the US (which was ridiculous as I'd spent around 1 month out of the previous 7 there) so I did my further trips via Atlanta while under ESTA.

For my wedding the best ticket price was via Charlotte and I knew that armed with my shiny new k1 visa, I'd get no problems.

I waved my big white envelope around as some had suggested while waiting at immigration in the hope it would be recognised and I'd be plucked from the line, but when I said "k1" when asked what I was travelling on, they just directed me to the ESTA line. Eventually at the desk I presented my passport and the big white envelope and informed the officer I was travelling under a k1. He opened the envelope and had a quick look through, checked my passport and did the electronic finger print thing. He then said he'd hold onto my passport and the paper work, and gave me a laminated card with the number 1 on it and told me to proceed through customs, collect my bag, and then to show my laminated card when exiting customs.

I did as instructed and the customs man directed me to a waiting area. There was no one else waiting. I waited about 25 minutes and then someone showed up with my passport and said "here you go". I said "I'm all done" and he said "yes". That was it - no ceremony, no grand welcome to the USA, but I didn't care, because I knew that after my short connecting flight I'd be with the love of my life, this time for good.
