I will start by saying that this was a unique situation. Today, Canada and US agreed to close the border as of March 21, 2020.
I obtained my CR1 visa on March 20, 2020. I had planned to enter my POE at Toronto Pearson Airport en route to San Diego on March 30, 2020 (delay due to work-related). However, with the uncertainty of the border closure, I decided it was best to activate my CR1 visa and become a permanent resident before flying to San Diego.

I drove from Toronto to Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. With the Provincial Emergency declaration, there was minimal traffic to the border (probably, 1h20 minutes each way). When I arrived at the bridge, there was only one lane open and it was eerily quiet. I explained that I wanted to enter using my CR1 visa and the CBP officer at the booth took my passport, asked me to lower my back windows and took a quick glance, and asked me to park on the left-side where I was directed into the CBP office where I was the only other person there.

Approximately 10 minutes later, I was called up to speak to a very nice officer. He asked me to verify my spouse's name, my intended address and explained some information to me (including my tax obligations, to always carry my green card, etc.) and he stamped my passport and welcomed me to the United States.

Overall, I had a great experience. It was expeditious but mostly because of the unprecedented situation.

We entered by car on a Monday morning. Gave them our passports and the packet from the consulate. They asked if everything was hers (the car was packed) I told them all but my one bag. We were directed to park and go inside. We sat for about 15 minutes then called up. One of the CBP agents was being trained but both were friendly and were joking around with us. All paperwork was in order and proper to enter and import her car. It took about 35 minutes total with no hassle at all.

SAULT STE MARIE, ONTARIO/MICHIGAN. Crossed over with my financé, no wait time to approach initial inspection, sent to secondary for document review, I-94 record. Was there for maybe 30-45 minutes, and didn’t search my car. Super friendly and welcoming! Amazing experience!

At the time this POE seem exceptionally easy and I should have know better and insisted on the proper procedure. I did a land crossing at the Peace Bridge, Buffalo, NY. I told the officer directly that I was coming in on a K1 Visa and has my paper work with me. He verified that I was moving and that everything in my vehicle was mine. He did this twice. He asked if I was importing my vehicle and I said i was and he advised that I can do it at the Charlotte airport POE as well. He said, “Okay we are all good!” I asked him if he needed my packet and he said “no”. This was confusing and I mentioned that wouldn’t he need to in order to enter my I-94. He said I didn’t need it.... fast forward 2 weeks and waiting for my I-94 so i could get my SSN and further my drivers license and get the joint accounts up... I learned that the officer entered me as a B2 visitor and has to head to the Charlotte airport with my sealed packet so CBP could enter my enter manually. This cause quite the issue as when I went to got me SSN, the system now showed me as entering twice with difference visas on the same day. I was also told that this would’ve caused issues down the road for AOS. So lesson learned, insist and demand the proper procedures!
