Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

The interview was on March 9th 2020 and while the put it under AP and we sent the documents they needed right away, they sent him back to across the boarder to Uganda and shut everything down because of Covid. We have been waiting ever since and now the case is mission critical and still waiting. We don't mind giving what they need but it has been to long we have lived apart and just need someone to finish the AP.

Review Topic: K1 Visa

First thing’s first, the K Visa is non-immigrant but in this situation considered immigrant just for scheduling purposes.
NOA2 was received on 16/Feb/2019 but we had to wait for official confirmation from the US embassy we chose(in Kenya) nevertheless my fiancee kept calling them for updates until one day they answered giving me my 13-character case number.

So since I had done research about this whole process and I knew what to do next, I didn't wait for official confirmation, I went to this website https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/ to get my Ds-160 done, but before you visit the site make sure you have a soft copy of your passport photo on your computer and also email yourself the confirmation page as that is the page they’ll ask at the embassy entrance and also your interview.(print ample). Beware that some web browsers may not work well with that site, I used firefox and it worked fine for me.

6 weeks later my fiancee received the official email from the National Visa Center(NVC) and in it my unique number, 2 weeks later, I received another official email from the US embassy in Kenya informing me that they had received my petition from NVC and can now begin processing along with the next steps. Now this is the one you've been waiting for. (you will need to print this out since its one of the documents needed to schedule your medical.

After that, head to (https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-ke/iv/users/sign_in) to create an account with the embassy. This is where you will schedule your appointment, pay the visa fees of $265 and choose the dhl location to pick up your package once everything is wrapped up. (I would recommend you choose the dhl near your accommodation or the embassy for convenience since the package will be of high importance) NB: that link is for the US embassy in Kenya, so make changes accordingly. And since k1 is immigrant in this situation, select the option that says “ I have received a letter from the consular section with instructions to register or schedule appointment”.
Now the next step is to wait for dates to open up at that site.
However, beware that getting an appointment can be very stressful and frustrating and can take from days to weeks to months. But what I did was to install the check4change extension to my computer (https://www.check4change.com/tutorial.php) and I got an appointment in 2 weeks on 13th June ( the embassy makes dates available in the morning hours local embassy time so you have to be on your A game as a lot of people are keeping an eye on this too) but, you CAN’T schedule an interview appointment before making visa payments.
So as soon as the dates open, you’ll choose the date given to you (not interview date but payment deadline)then payment options will be displayed. You can either pay through Post bank or M-pesa but I recommend M-pesa. (for all Ugandans you can find M-pesa services available at the post offices along the boulevard, Kampala jinja road)

Once payments are done, they’ll send you a receipt in 5- 8 hours (sometimes longer) confirming payment then the site will move from payment to schedule and a calendar will be displayed with available dates and that's where you choose your interview date from. Once that’s all done and everything is to your liking, instructions will follow detailing all that you’ll need to know.
Then you’ll now need to book a medical appointment with IOM. You can email them at mrfnbommsc@iom.int stating you’d like to book a medical. (you’ll need a copy of passport’s bio-data page, the official email from US embassy that stated they will begin to process, email you received after scheduling visa interview showing date of interview and state the dates you’d like to have the medical). Confirmation will be sent to you once all that is clear. I strongly recommend you book your medical 2-3 weeks before the interview in case of any health complications otherwise 1 week is fine. I booked mine a month earlier as they didn’t have any slots available the time I wanted. And also, before you go for your medicals I would recommend you get some vaccines (yellow fever, hepB,MMR,polio, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) from your home place as the ones from those embassy chosen institutes tend to be highly priced, travel with your certificate of vaccination (preferably the yellow fever one)

When the time came,I booked my airbnb (which I found cheaper) near IOM (which is near the embassy) then went to Mash Poa bus station (at national theater parking Dewinton rd in Uganda kla) and booked my bus ticket to Nairobi Kenya. My medical dates were 6-7 May so I left the evening of 4th and 13 hours later arrived in Nairobi. Beware Kenya is cold so pack accordingly. I checked into my airbnb which had good internet because that’s all I needed, I got my documents ready for the next day.
While in Kenya, I recommend you use the safe boda, uber and taxify apps for transportation otherwise you’ll be cheated by the other means.

On the 6th, I got up at 5, left and arrived there at 5:30 and I was the first in the line. Time passed as more people came, we were told to make two lines male and female and were worked on at 7. They asked for our appointment letters first (received them in email) and passport copy. You’ll be let into the reception and then they’ll sort everyone out according to their destination (IOM is used by many countries) and then send you for briefing, which will be to let you know what and how the whole 2 day experience is going to be like and the requirements set by the US. They’ll take blood and urine tests first then xray and that’s about it for day one. After that you’ll be given slips to go make payments, I recommend you pay the same day and bring the receipts back the following day to avoid inconveniences.(would recommend you pay in dollars)

On the 7th, I got up at the same time, was first in line again. On this day they do physical check ups including bp checks, full body check, review and give you your x-ray results on cd, ask for medications you’re currently on, give you shots and then a certificate at the end of it all, which you will need when filing for adjustment of status while in the states. I was done by 11am.
Went back to my accommodation and got some rest because I was travelling back that same day in the evening. I reached home safely, God is good.

Now it was time to prepare for my interview. I had to know more about my fiancee and go through our i129f again. Gather all relevant and irrelevant documents please, you never know what they’ll need.(https://citizenpath.com/k-1-visa-interview-checklist/). And please beware that the affidavit of support is accompanied with tax transcripts which can be found here www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript (they are free but we had no idea and it cost us time).
I booked my usual bus ticket and a different airbnb. It took me two days to gather my documents but with the help of my fiancee, we got it done. I traveled on the evening of the 11th, arrived 12th checked in and rested a bit, woke up later to arrange for transport for the morning. My airbnb host had a car and accepted to drop me at the embassy in the morning. Make sure you arrange for transport before you go to bed or wake up extremely early.

On the 13th I woke up at 4:20, said a prayer, of course, and had breakfast to calm my nerves. We left the house at 5. In 10 minutes we were at the embassy, he dropped me off and I went to the waiting area and, as usual, I was the first there, and as I waited, more people came. We were told to make two lines - male and female, and at 6 they let us into the first checkpoint. We were told to show the embassy email, passport, ds-160 page and the appointment letter. I was checked thoroughly then made my way to the next gate.
Arriving at the next gate I was told to wait until it was 7am since the consular department wasn’t open yet and when it was time, they checked for my name to see if I was scheduled for that day. I was on the list and was told to move into the scan area; this is where you leave all objects. e.g phones, laptops etc.(you’re given a locker).

I made my way to the building, reported at the first desk and was given a number then told to have a seat outside and listen to be called. 10-20 minutes later I was called, went to the window and was told this wasn’t the interview but where they take your bio-metrics and check if you have all the right documents they require. This is where I was asked to show my fiancee’s tax transcripts but the ones I had on me weren’t what was needed but I was told I would still have the interview. So I went back out to wait to be called for the interview. 15 minutes later my number was called again.

I approached the window and the consular greeted me and said to raise my hand and take the oath. I did exactly that and I placed my fingers on a pad as a form of signature.
The first question was how did we meet, what made us fall in love, where does she work and as what. Was she married before and does she have kids and what are their names.
And she did all this while typing and reviewing our i-129 packet. So after that she said I didn't have the right tax transcripts, then she pulled out a yellow document and said but congratulations you've passed your interview but in order for me to issue your visa in the coming days you’ll need to have your fiancee visit this site (written on the yellow document) and print out the tax transcripts and send them to us along with your passport.
I left the building, collected my property at the gate, checked the time and it was 8:15. So everything was done in 2 hrs. I was served first at every point, it pays to be early.

I then rushed out and updated my fiancee, went back to my place and rested until she called me and was a bit sad but I told her to be strong that I had passed the interview. So she went to the site and did exactly that. (also note that the amount considered by the embassy on the tax transcripts is the adjustment gross income). She emailed them and I sent them back with dhl along with my passport on the same day.

So I couldn't wait for them to give me feedback from Nairobi, I had to head back home. But I was not aware that I needed to visit the Ugandan embassy in Kenya for an exit document since I didn't have my passport any more. They however told me at the border it was OK and I had 3 months of stay in Kenya and if it expired before my passport is returned I needed a new temporary travel document.(which I got at URA offices in fort portal luzira at the extreme end of the road)

So after giving them all they require, the next thing to do is be patient and track your case on https://ceac.state.gov/CEACStatTracker/Status.aspx .

We tracked our case frequently while emailing them and they would always reply that we will be worked on. Our case changed to application received a month later, then to administrative processing until one day we checked and it said issued on 27/Aug. Hours later we received an email from them saying my package had been sent to dhl and to expect contact from them soon.
I packed my bags, said my goodbyes, traveled to Nairobi, picked my package, went to Nyayo house (immigration office Nairobi) to extend my stay in the passport and not have issues with immigration at the airport, booked my ticket. I flew from there.

Some of the few key things to note:
-Do not make any travel plans before visa is in hand.
-Make a copy of the i-129f (have it shipped to you).
-Email them frequently to make sure your case stays active (respect goes a long way).
-Make sure to come with sufficient medications if you need any since it’s a k-visa and you won’t have insurance for a long time.
-Punctuality pays off.
-When in doubt, bring it - you’d rather have it than not (documents)
-Interview questions can vary, don’t trust what you see online.
-If you’ve been outside your country in the past 5 years, have a police clearance for that place (check the embassy site for countries exempted ) and also figure out the dates you left and returned. (be consistent)
-Be calm at the interview, the consular is a human being and also don't speak unless spoken to.
-I recommend you get married ASAP and file for adjustment of status soon to avoid delays.
-Do not open the envelope and be very careful since its not sealed extremely well.

And on that note, God has been so good to us, and we would like to thank everyone for their support, and we know that this is a very frustrating journey and at times it'll feel impossible, but just hang in there, believe in God, remember what it is all for, and nothing worthwhile in this world is ever easy.

When in doubt you can contact us; we’ll be more than happy to help.

Nairobi Kenya Embassy 🇰🇪🇺🇬
Steps from NOA2 to Interview.
After we received our NOA2 Date 02/28/2018 we waited 15days to receive Case Number, I called NVC on ‭+1 (603) 334-0700‬ Case was ready in Us Embassy Nairobi.
I called the Nairobi Embassy on ‭+254 20 5000006‬ they told me they’ll send my fiancé instructions soon.
On 03/28/2018
They email My Fiancé Instructions/Appointment letter! Remember to print out this letter and bring it with you at your medical appointment and interview appointment.
In this letter they instruct you to create account on there Embassy site:
To create account you must be ready with your case number, Passport number, Confirmation Number from Ds-160, visit this site after receiving your case number https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/ and have that Ds-160 Done! Email yourself the confirmation page, they’ll ask it on your visa interview, be ready with your passport photo on your computer. After you’re done with that go and create account on the Embassy site
https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-ke/iv/users/sign_in
K1 is considered as immigrant visa. Select option that say “I have received a letter from Consular section with instructions to register or schedule a K visa appointment” I was stuck on this page just because of selecting a wrong option. I called the embassy they corrected it.
This is the site you’ll pay your Visa Fees of 265$
Selected DHL office where you’ll pick your passport and Not To Open envelop after interview is done, Select DHL offices in Nairobi, don’t select a office that will take you 7 and more hours to get there.
Tips on this site, It took me 14days to get appointment with the Embassy, some take 30days. You can’t go ahead and pay visa fees when your haven’t got appointment date, Keep checking on this site every after 20 minutes(tips) the Embassy will open dates, once they open a date go ahead and selected that date they’ll email you straight away their payments method for the 265$ VISA fee ! You are given dates you should make in this payment. Be ready with money with you.
They use Post Bank and M-Pesa, I recommend M-Pesa,they Emailed me confirmation of my payment after 6hours.
After confirming your visa fees go ahead and select a date you wish to have your interview.
NEXT STEP
Book medical appointment with IOM, they’ll need your Appointment letter with dates of your interview.
https://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/iv-dv-supplemental/NRB_Nairobi.pdf
Email them on :mrfnbommsc@iom.int
They’ll email you back as soon as possible.
Make sure you book your medical two weeks prior interview appointment, that’s if you have any medical issues, I didn’t want to stay that long in kenya waiting for interview, I booked one week prior interview appointment.

After getting all that done I got my documents ready https://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/K1/NRB_Nairobi.pdf and booked a bus to Nairobi.

I used Modern coaches, it took us 14 hours to arrive in Nairobi. Luckily enough a sat next to a Ugandan friend who was going for his medical appointment on the same dates as mine.
Make sure you book the bus that will depart at 7pm, it will arrive in Nairobi the next day in the morning,( who wants to arrive in the country you don’t know at night)lol At the Boarder i was asked for my Passport, Yellow fever book, where I was going and days I will spend there. The officer asked for my appointment letter with the Embassy just to confirm my information.
My medical appointment was for two days Monday and Tuesday, i booked on Saturday 7pm and arrived Sunday morning in Nairobi.
We got time that very day to find where IOM and the Embassy is so that the next Monday morning we are not stuck.
We boarded a Matatu(You call it Taxi in KLA) to Gigiri. It’s way cheaper than other means of transport in Nairobi.
Before departing for Nairobi make sure you have these apps on your smart phone.
UBER & TAXIFY.
Nairobi is a very big city you can get stuck with transportation, I used these apps whenever I was going for my appointment, it’s very Cheap.
With accommodations we stayed at Hotel Green Court latema Road Nairobi. It’s like 6km to Embassy and IOM. They provide free internet and breakfast in the morning. We didn’t get a chance to have their breakfast because we could leave early in the morning.
We stayed here for two days as my friend was departing Tuesday evening after his medical appointment, he has his Interview appointment for DV Lottery (Green card) on 22rd May.
Day 1

We arrived 5:30am for our Day1 medical appointment, went in at 6:00am they asked One passport photos, appointment letter with Embassy, appointment letter with IOM and your passport and a copy of your passport bio page. Be ready to discuss your medical issues with the doctors.
They took my blood & Urine samples, got X-Ray, you’ll be asked for if you have any medical issues and your immunization records! I only provided my Yellow fever book.
I was given receipts for payments. Their bank is at Market Street not far from IOM,Payment are done in USD and KSH only, better travel with your money exchanged.
Pay that money that very day and be back with receipts the next morning.
Day 2
It was pretty quick, started with giving my receipt to cashier. I was called by Doctors at 8am, they checked me, got my height measured.
I was given the a CD, The Doctor was very nice, He told me everything was fine that I’m one way step to America, with a Smiling face I said; Thank you sir.
Headed to get vaccines, got 3 shots after I waited for my medical certificate. I was told to move with the two whenever I travel to states. Checked in at 7:03am Checked out at 11:29am.

NOTE: IOM is supper busy, be in time many embassies have their medical here, I.e ENGLAND, AUSTRALIA, USA and other European countries. it’s so cold in the morning, they professionally do their work, they’re so helpful.
Children between the ages of 2 years to below 15 years will require a Tuberculin skin Test (TST) by Mantoux method (administered ONLY on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays) which will be read after 48 hours, i.e. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Monday respectively - during the physical examination.
MEDICAL WAS SUCCESSFULLY DONE ✅

My Friend had to depart that day he couldn’t stay in kenya for long.
I had to find some cheap hotel since I was to stay in Nairobi.
I got Protea Guest House, Duruma Road near Coast Bus. 6km to Embassy and IOM. It’s way cheaper than the first one, I was able to save for the next days in Nairobi, They only provide Hot Water in shower..lol No Internet No Breakfast. I bought a Safaricom SIM card, Roaming is very expensive with MTN.
I liked here because I got to find Ugandans here and the Ugandan Restaurant with our local foods. Life was Fine.
I pushed for the next days, I could move around Nairobi. Got time to go to Maasai Market , Nairobi Safari walk, Central Park, Mamba Village, Uhuru Park. I made sure by 6pm am at Hotel. I advise not to move at night.

15th May 2018 was my Interview day
I walk up at 4:30am, Got my self ready and Prayed to be back at Hotel when I’m a winner..lol
By 5:00am i left Hotel, I requested for Taxify which arrived in 5 Minutes, Drove me to The Embassy, I arrived at exactly 5:25am. A few women where already here,I was the only man there at that time.
They came in as time went on, 6:00am we were told to make a line Of two, women and men. I was first of course..lol
They security men asked for My Appointment letter and Passport. I had many envelopes, he asked why I carried many of them, I told him I rather be prepared that being under prepared, he laughed..lol
I proceeded to the check in, you are told to get your belt of if your pants won’t go down..lol, your cd and switch off your phones, get all metallic objects plus coins in the plastic bracket given, make sure your passport is with you.
I was checked, they remained with my phone and X-Ray CD and gave me a card with number 26 to pick them after my interview.
I proceeded to the big building, Pressed the blue button on wall and pulled the heavy door as I got inside, the lady asked for my appointment letter, she gave me a number C402, A small paper to fill applicant contact information. She told me to wait outside to be called.
The security guard at the waiting area advise you to be attentive and listen to your number. He told us toilets are just next to the check in area and some are inside the big building. J/s lol
Be ready, Dress nicely this place is super cold in the morning.

Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

Medical exam on 21&22nd of August at IOM Gigiri:

We took the Easy coach bus from Malaba directly to Nairobi. We stayed at the Gigiri express hotel for $60 per night, and it included breakfast. The hotel is just a block or two away from IOM. Husband left at 7:30 am to arrive a little before 8 am. Everything was straightforward. They took two passport photos and directed him through the whole process. The first day they asked about immunizations, all of which we got ahead of time in Uganda. They took his Blood Pressure and blood sample, then gave him the payment slip, which was only for the cost of the exam since he had all vaccinations.

We paid the fees at the bank inside Village Market and then went to enjoy Nairobi!

The second day was much shorter and he was out by 10am, after handing over his payment form and taking chest xrays and being g examined.

We left that night and arrived home in Uganda the next morning.

Interview on 5th September,2017

We woke up at 3am to prepare breakfast . this time around, we stayed at Four ways Junction Home stay, a beautiful cottage with all amenities needed, including a full kitchen. It is $35 per night and about a 15-20 minute drive from the embassy.

Husband arrived around 5 am, and was the very first in line. The second person arrived after 5:30 and then others began to trickle in.

At 7:45 am he was called forward to hand over all original docs. Then he did biometrics. He wasn't paying attention to the clock, so I'm not sure of the time frame after this.

A while later he was called to Window 7, which unfortunately housed the infamous grouchy blonde who we have now dubbed "The Tiger". Anyone who reads about Nairobi will be familiar with her! She is fierce! She never smiled, and immediately began firing questions at my husband. I will try to remember them all:

(Forgot about the very first one so I'm adding it here) " What are you applying for? Why are you applying for this visa?!? With an exasperated, annoyed tone)

1 when and where did you meet your wife?
2 what was she doing in Uganda?
3 how long did you date and how did the relationship progress?
4 dates of meeting, moving in together, proposal
5 asked why we married when I was not yet divorced (this was a trick question...we had a traditional introduction ceremony 3 days before divorce became absolute. It was a year long process) our true marriage was days after divorce absolute.
6 what is my (petitioners) profession?
7 asked if I could really support our family
8 asked about husband's profession, then thanked him for his service (IT security specialist) 🔐📧💻

From here, she pulled out the yellow slip and handed it to my sweetie. He told her " give me just a moment" and handed over the forms indicated on the paper, as well as all my mother's tax forms, and she seemed surprised! We were extremely organized, thanks to VJ!

After dissecting the papers with extreme attention to every line, she asked him one final question.... Do you plan to be in the USA forever? He answered that Africa is a part of our home and always will be, and we will be coming regularly to visit our family here.

Then she pulled out that beautiful green paper and told him in a dry tone, "Your visa has been approved. Follow the instructions to collect your passport at the DHL you have registered with."

We truly believe that she had the intention to deny us, but thanks to my husband's ability to stay very calm and satisfactorily answer every question (like a BAWS) 😂, we made it through.

Because there is so little current info about Uganda and the Nairobi Embassy, we will be writing a detailed guide in the days to follow.

Please forgive any grammatical errors! I am writing this on an awkwardly sized tablet that has my hands split wide open! I will attempt to edit once we get to a computer.

Good luck to all of you fellow East Africans, and BE PREPARED!!!
