The results of the physical examination were not available in time for the day of the interview, so I mailed them later.

Review Topic: K1 Visa

My interview was scheduled at 8:15AM but we were allowed to enter Tokyo US embassy at 8AM after showing the police outside our Appointment Confirmation sheet. They already had my name and my American fiancé’s name in their visitor’s list so it was good to know that they were already expecting us. My fiancé was allowed to enter the building and wait with me inside. This is the complete process I took:

1. Went thru security. The security was quite strict about checking the items we have— made sure our phone’s bluetooth is off, take out items from our pockets, take our masks, etc.
2. Showed my passport bio page, DS-160 (they scanned the barcode), ID photos. The staff at the reception was very friendly, even greeted me in my native language.
3. Went to get our queue number.
4. At the INTAKE counter, the staff seemed unfriendly and flat. She asked for my documents:
a) passport
b) ID photos
c) medical report
d) police certificates (Japan and PH)
e) Form I-134
And a few questions asked:
a) Is this you and your fiancé’s first marriage?
b) Have you ever been arrested?
c) Have you used any other names?
d) Do you have any children?
e) What does your fiancé do?
f) Is this his work “future”contract? (My fiancé has a full-time job offer in America.)

5. Went to the INTERVIEW counter after waiting for about 30mins. I told the interviewer that they mistakenly got the “current” contract instead of the future contract so I gave the right doc to them. He asked me:
a) Do you swear that all info provided is true and correct to the best of your knowledge? (Then he took my fingerprints)
b) Describe the relationship. When did you meet?
c) Is he in the States now?
d) What does he do?
e) What is my job? (i’m a teacher) Which school do you work for?
f) Why not just get married here?
g) When did he propose?
h) Assuming the visa is approved, when do you plan to get married?

After that, he looked at the future contract for just a few seconds then returned it to me. Received my old passport, original birth certif, and certificate of no marriage (for Filipino beneficiaries).

He seemed nicer than the Intake staff and looked at me in the eyes whenever he asked questions so I kept eye contact too. He said everything looked good to him and I’ll just wait for a week. I was relieved and at the same time worried because I still have a lot of docs in my hand that they didn’t ask so I asked him if they had everything they needed and it was fine.

I even have a co-sponsor Form I-134 but they did not ask for it (I guess my fiancé’s job offer was enough). They did not ask for many other docs we’ve prepared. Oh well.

Everything was done at 9:35AM. Just glad that everything went well.

When I arrived, I was very nervous, and the Japanese worker who took my paperwork scared me a bit. Not the friendliest. However, the actual interview itself was nothing to worry about, it took less than 5 minutes, the American worker was very friendly and empathetic. He didn't take the majority of the huge paper stack that I assembled, but ah well.
They said the visa will take maybe 5 days to get here.
All in all, a pleasant experience.

Appointment was at 8:15, but I got there at 8. I was the 3rd person there so there was barely any wait time.
The interview was very quick. He just asked me to talk about my relationship and I told him how when and where we met and how we ended up here.
He also asked me when I plan on moving to the states and when we’re planning on getting married. Also about our wedding plans.
Then he asked me if my fiancé works at a bank, which he doesn’t:0
I thought this was a trick question or something, but turned out he genuinely thought the company name was of a bank.
He was really friendly and the whole interview took maybe 5 mins!
