Bring a book, bring a lunch, and most importantly bring patience. And check the cover sheet of the mysterious brown envelope before you leave the Embassy.

For immigrant visa interviews, the Embassy's security won't let you enter the building earlier than 1pm. Mobiles aren't allowed in the building (security will hold them for you).

My husband's interview letter said to be at the Embassy at 1pm but he wasn't called to the desk until 2pm. They first asked for his paperwork - passport, birth certificate, marriage licence, the sealed medical results, police certificate, Form I-864, two passport photos and the $400 visa fee. Once he handed over all the paperwork, they told him to sit and wait.

An hour later he was called for the interview. It took all of ten minutes, the majority of questions were about our assets and specific questions about me (the USC). He was told at the end of the interview that his visa had been approved and to again sit and wait for his passport.

At 4pm, he was called to the desk to learn that he would have to return the next day for his visa as they were closing for the day.

We returned the next day, waited another 30 minutes before being handed his passport and the mysterious brown envelope. Stapled to the envelope is a cover sheet that lists his pertinent details. We scanned this sheet to discover spelling errors in the name and address of our U.S. address. Not wanting his green card to possibly go to the wrong address, we returned the envelope and pointed out the mistakes. It took another hour of waiting before they returned the corrected cover sheet. It was a great relief to know this part of the journey is complete!

Review Topic: K1 Visa

Had a great experience at the Dublin embassy. From the security to the office staff they were all well mannered and helpful.

I joined a Queue of just myself and another girl. Was called to a window and a lady asked me for the required info. I then went and paid the fee, took a seat, called by another lady to sign some forms. I then sat again and waited to be called my the Consular Officer. He was a young guy and not a bit intimidating as i'd imagined he would be. I saw the approved stamp on my case before he even start asking me Questions
Question were :- What does your Fiance work at?
Where does he work?
Where does he live and for how long?
When did you get engaged and when do you think you'll be married?
How did you meet?

Simple little things and I had nothing to hide. Waited about 45mins for the Visa and I was done. I was at the Embassy about 2.5hrs. The interview took at the most 10 mins.

Warning though. Make sure you thoroughly check all spellings and info on your visa. I got home and only then noticed they had left the "H" out of my first name. I had to go back to the embassy the following week and wait 1.5hrs for them to amend this error.

Review Topic: K1 Visa

Arrived at 12.50 for my interview at 1.00. Allowed into the security area where my phone and keys were taken to be returned on exit. Sat in waiting area for 15 minutes and called to submit my DS-156 and other documents. Told to pay the cashier €100 even though the packet 3 asked me to get a bank draft for €107.00. I agve the cashier the draft and got a receipt. Asked to return to my seat and waited another 20 minutes. Called again to submit my DS-156K and asked to sit down once again. Another 30 minutes passed and I was called for my interview which was carried out at the window in the main waiting area. The other people in the waiting area could hear the whole interview which was slightly off putting but it only took about 10 minutes and the questions were fine. I was then told that I was approved for the visa but that I would have to return at 3.30 to pick it up. Luckily I had my drivers licence with me which I needed as ID to gain access back into the Embassy. The Embassy kept my passport while the visa was being processed.

Returned at 3.30 and told to wait once more. My visa was handed to me at around 4pm. I was handed back my passport which now has a US sticker with my visa details and photograph. I was also handed a sealed envelope which I give to an immigration official at my point of entry to the States.

Everybody I had to deal with was courteous and business like. The experience was fine apart from all of the waiting.

Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

Our visa journey is finally complete! Ciaran had his visa interview at the US Consulate in Dublin on Friday, Sept 5. He got to the consulate and had to wait a long time, spoke to two different immigration officers who asked how we met, and that was it! Then the second officer gave him his visa and his packet and he was on his way! The whole thing lasted about 2.5 hours. I am picking Ciaran up from the Chicago O'Hare airport today, and he is here to stay!

The visa interview appointment was a bit of a non-event. You know when you prepare for all eventualities, double check everything, hold your breath and then... it is much less difficult than you thought!

My appointment was at 1pm, so I arrived at 12.30pm, and was told to come back at 1pm, they wouldn't let me in beforehand. An old lady was there at the same time and they wouldn't let her in either, not even to the benches inside the security hut, so I walked her to the bus stop bench 50 yards away. Turns out she is 98 and wants to visit the US one last time (she used to be a green card holder). I hope I am that fit mentally and physically at that age! Went back at 1pm, handed over my mobile (cell) phone for them to keep in the security hut, and went to the visa section. There was only myself, an Indian man who I think was there for a work visa, and another gentleman applying for a spousal visa who had to return because he needed to file a waiver.

When I went in I handed in my docs, they seemed surprised how well I was prepared (had a file with dividers for everything as recommended on here), and didn't even ask for all of our proof of assets and income (I have some income from writing which will continue when I am in the US). Unfortunately my Irish police cert has me listed as being born in 1976 instead of 74, so they could not accept it. Then I went to pay the visa fee and sat back down.

Only a few minutes later I get called by the consular officer, who asks me when we got married- I said 1995 instead of 2005, doh! But he said "are you sure?", and I corrected myself. He asked why we are moving to Arkansas (I said due to better house prices, to which he smiled), and whether the address we gave as our US address (my husband's sisters address)- is near Little Rock, to which I said no, it is in the NW. Not sure if that was a test or just conversation. He asked if I had any kids from my previous marriage (no), and if the twins from this marriage had been registered with the embassy yet (yes), and then said I was all set, just to call them when I had the corrected Irish police cert, and I could come in right away and get the stamp for my passport. So after all this, all the prep and worry that they wouldn't take assets only (a rumour I heard from other Irish applicants), it was actually really easy, they didn't look at any of the bonafide evidence I brought, and I was out of there within the hour.

I got my amended Irish police cert the next Monday, rang the embassy and got an appointment for the next day, 1pm again. I knew better than to arrive early this time! Was second in line when I arrived at 12.55pm, and there were 7 of us by the time we were let in. Handed in my police cert and passport, told to sit down. And sat while everyone else got called up... and sat... and sat... I started to think there was something wrong with my application! But then they called me, gave me back my passport (ow with visa) and the Mysterious Brown Envelope, told me to have a good day and that was it.

Tips:
- don't fret- embassy staff are friendly and helpful.
- do make sure you have everything in order (labeled file is great idea!), so you don't need to root around when they ask for a particular document.
- Make sure you have everything, and ideally copies to give them too (puts them in a good mood if they don't have to do photocopies themselves). They are not kidding when they say "bring everything and the kitchen sink".
- Double check you have everything- out of the two times I was there, and met 9 other visa applicants, no-one got their visa right away, everyone forgot something or didn't have something complete, or only had copies of something they wanted the original of.

Preparing to move now and so won;t be online as much, but feel free to PM me anytime with questions about the Irish embassy and I'll do my best to answer asap.
