Review Topic: K1 Visa

I had my K1-interview appointment on July 14th, 2005 9:00 am. I was there early so I had to wait until 8:45 am until they let me in. I didn´t have any cellphone or electric device with me so the check went very smoothly and quick. Nobody told me where to go so I had to find my way in the consulate which was very confusing. I eventually made it to the non-immigrant-section, rang the bell there and a nice lady took my invitation, passport and the pictures and handed me an envelope. She told me to write my address on the back of it and asked me to sit down again for a little while.

About 5 minutes later she called my name, I handed her the affidavid of support, signed a document (the one you are not supposed to sign home), gave her all kind of supporting documents (tax-returns and W2´s were not required here). Then she said that this already was the first part of the interview and asked me to sit down again.

Another 5 minutes later I was called to the actual interview. There was an old lady sitting at the counter and she only asked me a few questions like: Where did you meet, has he met your family, do you have plans for your wedding day already etc. Nothing to worry about though. Then I had to swear something I didn´t understand cause the microphone kept cutting in and out. Suddenly she said that I was approved. I was expecting something big but no, she said, That´s it, you´re approved and we send you the visa as soon as we have your medical results - I went to medical one day earlier in Munich. After all I can say, all that excitement and nervouseness is for nothing...

Hello,

I had my interview today for my CR1 in the consulate in Frankfurt. Here is how it went. Note my experiences are all based on Frankfurt and may be totally different in you case. Please do not take my experience as the norm.

Interview was at 7:30 so we arrived at 7:15. Already a bunch of people in line. However, the gate opened promptly and they took US citizens and appointment holders first.

First confusing point was the receptionist person told us to go to window 21 while the instructions we got with packet 4 told us to pay first and then go to window 21. I followed the instructions which appeared to be the correct method.

Tip 1: Follow instruction letter.

After paying the fee, we (my wife, the USC, still living in Germany was with me) went to window 21 where the women took the DS-230 part 2, my photo and my passport. She was happy I had the form filled in correctly. She then handed me the envelope and asked me to take it, write my German address, place the stamps on it and have a seat.

Tip 2: The embassy in Frankfurt has a photo machine and stamp machine. A lot of people either forgot the stamps or did not have the correct photo. Bring change (Euros) with you for the machines in case you need it. The cashier is not allowed to give you change!!!!! I was lucky in that I did not need it.

After waiting about 20 minutes we got called to another window. There another lady asked us in stages for our documentation. She checked each for correctness and completeness. We had enough in our own assets to not need a co-sponsor but it was very close so we had one ready just in case. She said it was not needed. Then, she explained what would happen if the visa was issued and what we would get in the mail. She then asked us to take a seat and wait for an official officer officer to call us for the interview.

Tip 3: If you are the immigrant and have lived with the USC for more than 6 months there was no problem using my assets once I had a 864A.

Tip 4: We used my address in Germany as the residence for my wife since she still lives there. Domicile in the US was never raised as a question.

Tip 5: All they wanted from the tax returns was the 1040. My wife files electronically and she had the printouts from Turbo Tax. These were accepted.

We sat again for about another 20 minutes and were called to another window. The officer asked us to swear to tell the truth. He then asked us to sign the relevant documents in front of him (DS-230 II, I-864 and I-864A). He took my fingerprints and then as he was doing all of this chatted about life in Germany, moving back to the US, etc. He got excited when I told him who I work for (popular audio company) and I explained I was fortunate to already have a job lined up in the US. We talked about where we were going to live etc. Finally, he asked abut the medical and I explained the situation (see earlier report). He said it was not a problem. They will keep the passport until they get the medical results and then send it back with the visa. With that, he wished us well.

Tip 6: The key to all of this is having all of your paperwork in order. It makes the officers happy and makes your life easier.

We left the embassy at 9:30. Exactly 2 hours.

Overall, it was an extremely pleasant experience. Both times I have been to the Frankfurt office I have found the staff pleasant, friendly, efficient and very helpful.

I hope this is useful to people. Let me know if you have questions.

Regards,

Dave

I had my appointment at 9:30am, which means that you are not actually allowed to even line up outside of the consulate untill 9:30. I was there 30min early and told to go for a walk..Once it was 9:30, the line moved very quickly and I was led through the security check. Make sure not to bring any cellphones or other electronic devices, they will not let you in and will tell you to bring them either to your car or to a newspaper stand up the road! Once inside, I went straight to the window I was told to go to which was in the Immigrant Visa Section and not nearly as busy as all the other windows in the Non-Immigrant section. There, the lady asked for my passport, the passport pictures (which I went to one of those machines real quick and took new ones since my ears were not visible on my old ones, cost 5€), the I134 and other proof of financial support. She also gave me an envelope which I had to put my address on and the stamps (there is a machine for those if you forget them). After that, I waited about 2 hourse before being called to the next window where I had to hand in the police certificate, a copy of my international birth cert with the original (they'll make a copy which you'll have to pay for if you don't bring one) and the lady there went through the whole K1 process and AOS with me. She told me to go sit down again and to wait untill a consul will call me up. I had merely sat down again when I was called up to again another window where the actual interview took place. There was a young man who did the whole fingerprint procedure and then made me sware that all the info provided by me was correct. After that, he basically went through the timeline of my relationship with my fiance and asked a few harmless questions every here and there. It went really quick, and all the sudden he said that I was approved and that they would send me my passport within a few days given that the medical results would turn out okay (I had done the medical the day before in Frankfurt). He also gave me a sheet of paper with a number and his name where I could call in case I had any problems. I had my passport with Visa 4 days later..

Ok, Im finally home and have some time to tell you guys all the details...

So, my appointment was at 9 am and since I was told to be there early I was there at about 8:35...and in by like 8:38, dont know why noone was there. I passed the securtiy check and was told to go to window 21! At window 21 I had to hand the nice lady the receipt from my visa payment, I gave her 2 pictures (I was wearing earrings but she didnt say anything...Im such a rebell  ) and she gave me a big brown envelop that I had to adress to myself. Then I was told to have a seat and the waiting began...
Maybe an hour later I was called again, this time to window 22 where I had to hand out my birth certificate (she just compared it with the one I already send her so I got the original back!), my police certificate, the I134 and the supporting documents! She didnt ask for any picuters, phone bills or whatsoever...then she told me all about how I have 6 months to travel to the US and 90 days to get married...fill for AOS and blablabla...then I was told to sit back down and wait for "the real interview"...
Maybe another 45 minutes later I was called again...to window 17 this time...so I was all anxois to find out whos going to do the interview...it was done by some 60 year old lady...or should I say grandmother?? But she was all nice and in a good mood!
She didnt really ask me that much...just where we met and when (since we met on Hawaii she was all like "Oh, how nice, Hawaii..."), what he does for a living, how many times I have been to the US, if he has ever been here, what Im doing for a living, if he already have a date for the wedding...and the weirdest question...if I still talk to him...oh well...then she asked me where Im from and I told her that I was from Bremen and the guy sitting right next to her was like "Oh, really, Im from Bremen too, where exactly are you from?" so we talked about Bremen for a little while and the she said the magic words...
Im gonna issue you your visa, its gonna be in the mail within 10 business days, have a nice day and welcome to America!!
So, that was it, I have no clue why I was so afraid and stuff, it wasnt hard at all...
