Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

According to my wife, the interview was easy, and was only asked a very small of number of questions:
1) Where does your husband live?
2) 2nd time in the US? What happened the first time with your K1 Visa process? (The first time my wife came to the United States, she came as my fiancee. Things did not work out the first time, and she went back to Colombia)

The interviewer made some small talk, and eventually told her she was approved. She was able to pick up the visa within 2-3 days of approval. So if you live far away and your visa is approved, it may be a safe bet to stay around the area, and perhaps wait for your stamped passport.

Review Topic: K1 Visa

Stayed at the Fairfield Marriott across the street the night before. 7am was our time. It’s a 3 minute walk to the embassy from the hotel. You arrive to a very unorganized area outside the embassy gate. Many people trying to sell you items and what not. You need to listen to the speakers that will broadcast across the road from the embassy. They will tell you what times are currently being called. Once you hear your time, simply cross the street and follow the crowd. Don’t arrive early. If you have 7am, 645am is plenty of time as nothing will happen until right at 7am. For our K1 interview, the petitioner is allowed to join inside for the process. No advance notice needed or special letter. Just cross the road and tell the first security guard you are a K1 and the petitioner is with you. Simply show your US passport for ID and you’re in. You will go through airport style security. Then to a document check where you will put everything in a specific order. After this, you go to another line for a second document check. After this, they keep the documents and you sit in an open air waiting area. Bathrooms and a cafe are available. You will sit and wait to hear your name called over a speaker. Simply go to the window number they call with your name. They will have all your documents. You raise your right hand and take the oath. Then finger prints electronic. You are speaking through a glass window and on a pay phone style phone. Miguel was asked a handful of basic questions about me and us. My job. My birthday. Where we had traveled to. Has he ever committed any crimes. Very basic items. No tricks. The Immigration Officer interviewing Miguel was wonderful x 1000. So nice and polite and really seemed to enjoy his job and seeing loved ones getting the chance to be together. The document check staff and security was also very helpful and nice. The interview was no-more than about 5-7 mins. He was told he was approved and he would have the passport back in about a week. Overall a 10/10.

Review Topic: K1 Visa

MY fiance went to the embassy and had her interview, and is currently on "refused" status. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with the "fraud" department trying to show we have a relationship, and nothing has moved forward. Her interview was on July 22nd, I did the phone interview on August 22nd, and no action has been taken on our case since September 29th. I wasn't able to travel much due to my job being short, I am finally getting to fly down and see her next month after 25 months of not seeing her sue to work. We talk for hours a day, we email each other daily when I am at work, as my job doesn't allow me to have a phone at work. I have finally reached out to my congressman to try and see if they can help. I have been doing all I can to keep her safe. If this was fraud she would be sending me money, not me trying to help her to keep her safe.

I am tired and I don't know what to do next. Hopefully someone will, because when I offered more information they blew my off. Please let this nightmare end.....

I wasn't there when my fiance had her appointment but she says the entire process was easy and very streamlined. She the early appointment and traffic in Bogota was still bad. She stayed in an AirBnb near the embassy just for that reason. The embassy employee was even joking with her during the appointment. She was mainly asked questions about how we met and what she knew about my kids. The interview was 15-20 minutes long and he told her congratulations you'll receive your visa in 10 days. Ana and I met online in October 2021, February 2022 I flew to Ecuador to meet her and we stayed together for a week. After that, she moved back to Venezuela which made it difficult for us to see each other. I have constantly gone to work since I was in the military. I wrote a letter to the embassy explaining my difficulties visiting Venezuela but they never read the letter.

The only real downside for us was not being at all familiar with the embassy. We had a 7am appointment, and stayed at a hotel to the southeast of the Embassy. The entrance for visa applicants is on the north side along Avenida Carrera 50. We walked and arrived to the north side around 6:35am, and there was a large crowd waiting across the street, where there's a restaurant and photo booths, etc. We asked a police officer and they told us to wait there. A few minutes later someone announced over the loudspeaker and told everyone with several types of visa appointments at 7, 7:15, 7:30 and 7:45am to get in line along the fence and show credentials to enter.

We were right next to El Dorado and couldn't hear well, and thus were slow to react and were pretty far back in line. Eventually we made it in, were told to go to a location #3, where we were given a sticker to identify us as residential visa applicants, and waited in a separate line before eventually making it through security - phone must be off, and they will confiscate any electronics for you to pick up after the interview - and then you head into the primary area, where there are ~5 residential visa booths and ~25 tourist visa booths.

When arriving, they need you to organize your documents. This was already well documented via the medical appointment, but if you are unsure, see also the first video in this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkLNF8160YYfaY-DAht5S8ecIzi4f3aO1. You need only:
1 - Original birth certificate of applicant
2 - Original marriage certificate
3 - Divorce certificate, if applicable
4 - Police certificate, full page
5 - I-864 and supporting evidence (tax return/transcript + W2)
6 - 2 visa style photos - 5x5cm - Be _very_ careful these follow proper guidelines

Other US visa websites had said to bring other documents - copies of the birth and marriage certificates, the visa letter, the complete DS-260, etc - but none of that was required, nor were any additional evidence of the relationship. I imagine in most cases, the embassy will have already reviewed your evidence and made a decision, and just need these last bits of documentation to finalize things.

In any case, after you compile the correct documents in order, you provide them to one of the booths, then they give you two papers - one about domestic violence and rights in the US, and another about the next step (paying for the green card) - then you take a seat and wait. There is sufficient seating, as well as a coffee stand in the area. We waited close to two hours. If you are not the nervous type, I would recommend bringing an old fashioned book to pass the time - multiple people were yelled at for using their phones. Eventually, we were called up to one of the booths for the "interview". It took ~2-3 minutes, and we were told the visa had been approved and it and the passport would be ready for pickup at the same site we had gone for fingerprinting on the prior Saturday.

Overall, a smooth process, not a lot to complaint about besides the procedure for entering, and approval is approval, so we are satisfied. We were back at the hotel by ~10:30am.
