Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

My wife's interview for IR-1 was scheduled for 6:45am on May 14. We live on Leyte, so we flew in to Manila on May 8 for a week -- with our 1 1/2 year-old daughter. It was a fun "vacation", and all went well! All told, it took 3 half-days of "visa business", and the rest of the time was pure adventure.

If you plan to bring a small child to the interview, see below for our experience. We didn't know what to expect -- if we could bring water, bottles, snacks.... More on that below.

My wife went to St. Luke's Medical Center at 6am on May 9; she was finished at 11:30. We had both read on VisaJourney that St. Luke's doesn't allow backpacks, phones, food, etc. to be brought in, but that wasn't true (at least with the guards on that day) -- she said there were about 15 people in line at 6am, and more than 30 going through the medical exam process in the next 3 hours. Some of the others had backpacks, phones, taking photos, etc. There were a couple of women... read complete review

My interview was scheduled at 7:10 AM. At 7 AM I lined up at lane 3 and ziplocks were being passed on to put our passports inside. The lady asked for my DS260 and she placed a barcode sticker on it.

During the prescreening, I gave my DS260, birth cert, marriage cert, CENOMAR/CEMAR, NBI clearance, SLEC sealed envelope and he also asked for the affidavit of support of my husband and joint sponsor with the tax transcripts (all the tax related documents). He asked for my name and birthday, my petitioner's name and birthday. He was busy looking at my papers and looking at the computer screen and he asked if I didnt upload my CENOMAR and new NBI clearance. (I didnt upload them on ceac) He just wrote down some notes on my papers and he just kept on stapling the documents and he asked if my husband is currently working and what was his job. He gave back my DS260 and told me to go to the next window for biometrics.

After that, the final interview. I gave my DS260 ... read complete review

The first officer who reviewed the docs before the interview asked me for my fiance's tax returns. I didn't have them since it wasn't in the official list of items. I instead had his 401k and employment details. She scoffed at me, "does he not pay taxes?" There was no need to be snappy so I just maintained composure and controlled myself from talking back.

The Consul who actually did the interview was kind.
She asked standard questions like how we met, the last time we met and about when I last visited my US citizen fiance in the USA.
She seemed easily convinced by the authenticity of our relationship.
She closed the interview by giving me a pamphlet with info in case of domestic violence.

Total time from queueing to interview was about 3 hours. The interview itself took about 15 mins.

The Cenomar was only updated within the last year. The requirements are that it be renewed within the last 6 months. The day after the interview my fiancé sent the updated Cenomar via 2go services to the US embassy in the Manila. We are awaiting a status change to our case. It is currently in Administrative Review.
