Had difficulty with issuance of visa. Embassy staff were indifferent at best, rude at worst. It helps to have a U.S. senator backstopping your case, as the embassy responded promptly when queried by the senator's staff. Read additional info in our timeline.

Review Topic: K1 Visa

The experience at the consulate was degrading and dispiriting. We flew to Nairobi from Lamu after I made an appointment with Dr. Meyerhold at the Sarit Center and arrived early, only to be told that "the doctor doesn't make appointments on the phone." We could fork over $300 for medical tests but the doctor wouldn't see us for 3 weeks. This was not what I'd been told on the phone. I pushed my way into the other doctor's office, thank God. But this turned out to be consistent with embassy practices. We arrived for our 8 a.m. appointment for an interview and had to wait on various lines for four hours. We weren't given numbers or anything; instead we had to shift chairs, until we finally dealt with a rude and ignorant Kenyan employed by the embassy (typical Kenyan bureaucrat) who was so awful I finally asked to see a supervisor. The embassy doesn't bother to tell you that the interview is only the beginning, and that if you fiance happens to be Muslim and has a common name (they ... read complete review

The embassy staff were rather cold and indifferent. They do not have separate tracking forms for K1 visas, and this created a problem when we returned to the embassy to collect the visa. The only positive comment I can make is that the consul general (or acting consul general, in our case), responded quickly when contacted by the office of a U.S. Senator. Fortunately, we had a senator's office backstopping our case. Otherwise, we might still be in Nairobi right now!

My fiance went through the US embassy in Nairobi. First problem was that it took them 6 weeks to even recognize that they had received the approved petition from the NVC. After that, things went somewhat smoothly. His interview was cancelled once because they had scheduled it but then it was pronounced a national holiday. Also, they are very hard to contact, but that may be true of all embassies. If you try to email them, don't expect a response or answer before 2 weeks have passed. Otherwise, my fiance is picking up his visa today so I'm not allowed to complain too much. They did enjoy that his papers were in order and thanked him so much for that. They ask very specific questions (what is your fiance's father's middle name? What was the name and location of the hospital where your fiance was born? etc.) If you have any other questions, email me.
