Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

My wife had her CR-1 interview last week along with her 5 year old daughter, and I was allowed to enter the embassy and attend with them. For context, my wife had previously entered on a K1 visa last year but sadly had to return to Colombia due to the death of her grandmother. We decided to postpone our wedding, marry abroad and start the process again for the CR1 visa.

The process was very well organized. Entering the embassy I just explained I was their petitioner but nobody asked to verify this or checked my passport. We first lined up at a desk where their documents were checked and placed in the correct order, then lined up at the windows to hand them over to an officer. Previously we had received an email saying our file was incomplete because it was missing our divorce records, however neither of us had been married previously. The officer checked the documents and asked if either of us had been married previously, we said no and it was no problem. Since our marri... read complete review

Review Topic: K1 Visa

We arrived at the embassy at 6:20 for a 7AM interview appointment. Everybody waits across the street until a security guard announces that they will allow entry for people with specified visa types and interview times. We were allowed to line up for entry at around 6:40 AM. First we had our passports checked, then lined up in 3 colored lines- red, yellow and blue. We aren’t sure what the each color means but we were told to go in the red line. They checked our passports, the pictures which needed to have the full name written on the back. Then we were given green stickers and went through a metal detector before entering another line to have our documents checked. There were workers who helped organize our documents then we went to a window to submit them. We needed the following documents:

Birth certificate
Police records
Medical exams
Passport
2 pictures
Declaration of financial support (I-134)
G-28 (not required, but we have... read complete review

Review Topic: K1 Visa

We got there about 6:20 a.m. for a 7 a.m. appointment.

Lining up outside the embassy was surprisingly orderly. I just thank god it wasn't raining. For K1 visa, there's no reason to fight or jostle. Your arrival time and appointment time seem to have no relation to when you are called to the window. Don't be afraid to ask questions about where to line up. Because K1 is sometimes called an immigrant visa and sometimes a non-immigrant visa, it can be confusing even for those who are trying to be helpful.

You go through an airport-style security screening first. Then there's a line to check your documents to ensure they are in the correct order. (You will be given a slip of paper showing the preferred order both at your medical appointment and at the CAS biometrics appointment.) Then there's another line where you hand in the documents at the window.

Then you sit and wait and wait and wait to be called. We were among the last to be called amo... read complete review
