His appointment was for 7:45 AM but he didn't come out until 11:45 AM. The interview itself was only five minutes. The rest was waiting. I speak Mandarin with my husband, so his English isn't very good. Because we indicated in our application that we use Chinese to communicate, his interview was in Chinese--even though the American officer couldn't speak very good Chinese.

Questions he was asked:

1. How did you two meet?

2. Have you met any of his family members? (He had met my older brother a couple of times when he came to visit us in China)

3. Is your fiance's Chinese good?

4. What does your fiance do for a living?

That was pretty much it. He looked at our file and then gave my husband a big smile and said, "Congratulations!"

APPROVED!!! (I-130)

My wife called with the fantastic news about an hour ago. We had been warned by an immigration attorney friend to prepare for the worst as Guangzhou is known to be highly skeptical due to frequent fraudulent applications. As a result we prepared every document we could get our hands on for the interview. In the end, the interviewer never even looked at any of our supporting documents.

My wife lined up at the gate around 0710 and was fortunate to be the second interview. She was interviewed by a female officer who was extremely pleasant. The interview itself lasted somewhere between 5-10 minutes. She was asked:

1. How long have you spoken English?
2. How did you meet?
3. (Wife) ever married before?
4. (Husband) ever married before?
5. Wife have children?
6. Husband have children?
7. Ever travel to US before?
8. Husband meet your family?
9. What type of work h... read complete review

Review Topic: Direct Consular Filing

Comparing our experience to that of what we've been through applying for two unsuccessful tourist visas in Chengdu, we give the new Consulate in Guangzhou two thumbs way, way up. The staff is friendly and patient. The lines outside the consulate are well-organized before the doors ever open on interview mornings; line-jumping is also kept to an absolute minimum (somehow!), which for those of you in China will find very comforting.

The VO who interviewed my wife was very nice and treated my wife with the respect she needed to feel confident during the interview -- something seriously lacking at the Chengdu consulate. The process was a very smooth one for us. And for anyone else applying for immigration in Guangzhou, we urge you to relax and stay positive. It felt to us like everyone in the building was there to help.
