Completed biometrics in San Diego yesterday. Easy peasy. Took about 30 mins from start to finish.

I'm in the process of removing conditions on my greencard. If all goes as planned, I should have my 10-year by the end of January, I'm figuring.
My husband (USC) and I may have the opportunity to do a volunteer project through our church. Basically, we'd be living in Amman, Jordan and teaching school for a little less than 1 year - approximately 10 months. We would leave in August 2014, come back for about two weeks in October, and then leave again and not return until sometime in June 2015.
I know that being gone over 6 months and close to a year, it is likely that I should apply for a re-entry permit, correct? Does it make any difference that I would be coming back in October for two weeks (making the second leg of the trip about 8 months)?
My main question is, what can I use here to prove residency? We have every intention of residing in the United States, apart from those 10 months. We currently rent an apartment but will be letting that lease go if we get accepted to the project. We own a car together - would it help to keep it registered and insured during that time? What if we had a storage unit? Can our joint bank account be used to establish residency, even if it doesn't have much use during the time we're gone? What else can I use that I haven't thought of?
Thanks in advance!
-
Yes, go to the bank and ask for a document with both your names on it. Even with online banking, they should be able to give you a paper statement, I believe?
-
You have a joint bank account - send in records as far back as you can.
You WILL have joint health insurance.
You have or will have joint tax returns.
Just that in itself is good evidence.
The only other thing that I would recommend is to get three friends to write letters of affidavits. Also, write a short letter explaining your living situation so that it doesn't come into question. We lived at my in-laws for about 6 months after we got married, so I simply put that in writing explaining what we did and why so that they weren't confused as to where we lived.

Actually got my NOA and Biometrics letters in my hand yesterday (they've been sitting at my in-laws for a few days)!

Check cleared the bank today! Maybe I'll get my NOA1 early next week?
-
I remember you too! It's funny that I haven't been on here in almost 2 years and I still recognize a great deal of people I'm happy to see people getting their NOA1s and biometrics dates so fast! Better than I expected.
Hey AlinaH! I remember you from the K1 days! In fact our I-129F dates are just a week apart!
Hopefully we can finish this last part quickly.

Sent my packet off on the 17th to the CA service center. Was delivered and signed for on the 18th. Can't wait to have this done with! Good luck too all other October filers!
Also, I was going to add my name to the list but I've had a glass of wine tonight and didn't trust myself not to screw it all up . If someone else who knows what their doing wants to take care of it, please do so!

Ok I decided to look on my airlines policy and it says this:
Before Your Trip - Travel Documents
"One non-expired government-issued photo ID, such as:
Driver's License
State ID Card
Military ID Card
Passport
Resident Alien Card
Native American Tribal ID
Photo Employment ID issued by county, state, or federal agency
Two pieces of ID (no photos required), one of which is non-expired government-issued, such as:
Social Security Card and Credit Card
Goverment-issued Birth Certificate and Health Club Membership Card
Voter Registration Card and Check Cashing Card
Airman's Certificate and Other Airline ID"
So I think I'll be ok
Thanks for helping me work through it!
EDIT: Actually that's for domestic flights. UGH ok I'm just going to change it.
-
Yes, you should be fine if traveling within the states. That's correct.
Sorry, correction, I'm flying out of the States to Mexico, and then back into the States. Does that make a difference?
-
Ok I was just looking into it more.
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/acceptable_documents.shtm
"Non-US/Canadian citizens are not required to carry their passports if they have documents issued by the U.S. government such as Permanent Resident Cards. Those who do not should be carrying their passports while visiting the U.S."
I think since I have a Green card in my married name, than that will count as my ID that matches my ticket.
Now, I think if I was flying in and out of Canada, I'd probably want my name changed on my CAD passport, but since I'm flying in and out of the US I should be ok with the ID they've issued me.
Anyone think that's not correct?
-
I was planning on changing my name on Canadian passport so I booked flights in my married name. The same one that's on my Greencard. Now I'm thinking that I'd rather save the money until it comes up for renewal in 5 years. But since I already booked my flights in my married name, do I HAVE to change it, or can I carry my old passport, my greencard, and my marriage certificate?
Thanks!
-
Thanks for all the replies. I think I feel better about it. I guess the best thing I can do now is just figure out the best way to prove that I still have ties to the US. I really wasn't planning on being gone for so long, and yeah, I wish it wasn't RIGHT after I got my greencard. I agree that looks bad. I'm just not really sure what else to do I guess.
-
If you go for more than 6 months, you need re-entry permit to come back.
And I heard that IO at POE could deny your reentry if we leave too long (over 6 months), because it seems like we don't care much about residency.
Well, I'm pretty sure it's a year before I need my reentry permit.

The veil refers to the head covering. The face covering is called "niqaab". We're not discussing "niqaab".
"Requiring that all candidates show their faces while reciting the oath allows judges and everyone present to share in the ceremony," Kenney said in a speech in Montreal.
'Kenney said some citizenship judges were concerned that some Muslim women wearing face coverings were not actually reciting the oath.'
"Kenney's announcement will affect women wearing the niqab -- a face veil with an eye opening -- as well as the burqa, which has a full face covering with a mesh area to allow vision."
Pretty sure the article is addressing the niqab. I have no problems with head coverings. Face coverings should be a no-no - for everyone, not just Muslims. People should be bale to see who you are! Back when I was in highschool, kids weren't allowed to wear masks because it posed a threat.

I know these kinds of questions have been answered before, and I did search it and read lots of helpful things, but I need someone to either reassure me that this is going to be okay, or tell me that it's definitely not.
I got my GC last week. Hubby and I had our civil ceremony in June, however we were always planning on having a much bigger, more formal, more religious "wedding" in Canada this coming August. I was already planning on going up with hubby early, say May or June, to prepare for the "wedding".
Now I've been offered several months of full-time work at my previous job in Canada, starting in Feb. For various reasons, it's not really working out for me to get a job here right now, and hubby is a substitute teacher still working on his teaching credentials, so me having some full-time work, however not ideal it is, would really help us out!
My sister also just had her first baby and I know that they could really use the help looking after her.
So, I would go up in Feb sometime, hubby would come up in June, and then we would both drive back to Cali in August. I'll be gone for about 7 months, and hubby will be there for the last two.
Is that going to cause me any issues? I know I don't need a re-entry permit for less than a year, but I see some people saying that anything more than six months is too long. Is that true, or just their paranoid opinion?
Does it make it worse that I have employment in Canada while I'm gone? Does it make it any better that I am also going with the intention of helping my sister?
I could really use some sound advice!

Received my green card in the mail today.
Good luck to everyone else still waiting!
Yay!

Yeah, in Nevada we didn't sign our certificate, just the license. I thought it was strange too.
OP, you can't change the signature on your marriage license, it's not necessary. From now on you can just sign things in your married name....UNLESS if something is still in your maiden name, then I'd continue to use your old signature. Maybe I'm wrong on that.
You can't change your name until your marriage certificate gets mailed to you.
-
oh yeah that would be stressful. Well I hope it works out for you and you get it the right time!

Got interview date for January 3, 2012!!!

We're October K1 CSC filers too and we would have gotten the greencard around this time too if I hadn't sat on our AOS package for months!
