  1. Hi Naddy! We want to see the dress!!!!!

I'm guessing Anwesha and Mrs. D will take a little time off from us and enjoy being close to their hubbies. Just a guess :)

    I second this!

I know this falls into the internet phone category, but Skype have started doing 'subscriptions' where you can pay a small sum a month and get unlimited calls to mobiles and landlines in your choice of country...for example for my mum to get a subscription to call me in the USA is £3.99/month.

Even better because you get a Skype To Go number - a local number you call off your mobile to access your Skype account and then call internationally...so if you're on a mobile with unlimited minutes and want to call overseas won't cost you anything extra :) (I use this to call Jason at the moment and the quality is excellent)

Just throwing my tuppence worth in ;)

Jess (back from Glastonbury and never so happy to see a shower in my life!)

Wow! That's great to know! Thanks for sharing this, Jess.

  2. EAD is another issue, should your husband be offered a position, please make and INFOPASS appointment and tell them he has been offered a job, but cannot take up the offer until he has work authorization in place, hopefully they will agree to it right there and then and get a card out in the mail to you. Speak to Imtan, he can tell you about it as he has just got his EAD expedited due to his job.

    Welcome to Jessica!

Hmmmm, I wonder if we could try doing this to expedite my husband's EAD. We got a double hire, but the University policy makes it unable to sponsor him on a work visa, so we have to wait until his EAD is approved for him to start working. One of my co-workers just quit, too, so it would be extra helpful for him to start soon. Although judging from timelines, we'll hopefully get approval in the next couple of weeks anyway. Bwah! So confusing!

  3. Iceland PM Weds Partner as Gay Marriage Legalized

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) -- Iceland's prime minister has married her partner under a new law legalizing same-sex marriage in the country.

One of her advisers, Hrannar B. Arnarsson, said Monday Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir and writer Jonina Leosdottir were officially married Sunday, the day the law came into force.

The pair has been in a registered partnership since 2002 and had applied to have it converted into a marriage under the new law. No ceremony was held.

The law was passed without a dissenting vote in Iceland's parliament June 11.

Social Democrat Sigurdardottir, 68, became Iceland's prime minister last year, after the previous center-right government was ousted by a wave of protest triggered by the country's economic crisis.

Way cool. But: Iceland is not New Zealand... And for what it's worth, the current PM of NZ is a male.

  4. heyyyy my lovely ladies :)

Me and John had a lovely traditional reception dinner yesterday night, hosted by my parents,it was amazing and all what we wanted it to be.

Lovely! How wonderful, sweetie! Can't wait to see some photos!!

Greetings from Scotland from Mrs Dog for the last time!

Mrs Dog and her dogs are leaving the UK in a few hours. And has she finished her packing? Hell no. So, will be up all night, packing and cleaning. You've all been through it, the last 48 hours are hell. So much to do.

Answesha, I'll be looking out for you at Charlotte Airport tomorrow.

So guys, give me a couple of weeks before I get back on here. It will take me that long to figure out the IT and get the laptop going. But the poor thing has been battered to death last 8 months, it could do with a rest!

I have never done any online dating in my life. But I have fallen genuinely in love with all you all over the last 8 months. Ditto this; I never knew before you all that it was possible! Goodness knows what I have done without you all.

South Carolina - brace yourself, Mrs Dog and her dogs is on her way!

You guys - wait for me here! Lots of love xxxx

Safe travels to the both of you! I'm sure North America will let out a little shudder of joy to have ladies so lovely as yourselves on the continent!

  5. Yeah!! It's like winning the world cup just to tie with Italy!:thumbs::dance::dance:

When a government employee is making six figures + benefits for a job and a private sector employee is making $70,000 for the exact same job, then yes that is overpaid. Government jobs should match the private sector equivalent.

Who said you can't go to the doctor in an emergency? No one said that...

Too bad they didn't go through... But at least we can say: All Whites UNDEFEATED at World Cup 2010!

  6. Yet to get EAD, though biometrics done on 6/10.

People who are saying their spouses will go crazy if they don't get a paycheck soon...my husband is in the same boat! He was at that point a few weeks after arriving, so he's really starting to get antsty now. We haven't had any touches on AOS since 6/16 (when CSC received the file) or on EAD/AP since 5/19!

Trying to be patient though

Ditto - biometrics on June 10 and nothing since. I think I'll be the one going crazy if my husband doesn't get to start working soon. He, on the other hand, is loving it. He's watched every single game of the world cup.

  7. Ok, lemme amend then.

If you need school to parent your child, instead of taking the responsibility to do it yourselves, then go for it.

I'll opt out, and be a real parent to my child.

And, I didn't imply it, I outright said it. ;)

I'm just saying that it's not an objective line in the sand. Some kids/parents wouldn't feel comfortable talking about these things. That doesn't equate to bad parenting.

  8. Just because I'm taking umbrage at the sex ed stuff doesn't mean I believe that education is rife with 'insidious opinions that differ from my own, and crazy teachers are trying to indoctrinate my children', and tbh, I resent your implication that merely because I disagree of where and when my child should learn sex ed means that I need to isolate my kid from normal society. I don't see what is so off the wall with a parent actually being INVOLVED in his/her child's education process. In fact, I'd dare say, if more took such an active role, we wouldn't have teachers having to fill the needs by being surrogate parents in our children's lives.

I will be making myself active in my child's education process. And when the time comes where I feel that the school system is overstepping its bounds, I will make adjustments. Will I wrap my kid in cotton wool and keep him segregated from society? Absolutely not.

I resent the implication that because you don't think your child should be taught sex-ed in school, it shouldn't be offered to ANY children. I don't see what all the fuss is about, really. I never had a sex talk with my parents, and I turned out perfectly well adjusted and morally upright in that department. You can opt out, or keep your kid out of school that day or something. But saying that it shouldn't be offered because it's the family's job to teach these things is narrow-minded and dismissive, in my opinion.

  9. Yeah, I get that. I guess I need to be vigilant once he starts school. But I have a few years

Erm, no it doesn't, don't be daft.

But what other insidious opinions that differ from your own will those crazy teachers try to indoctrinate your child with? I'm not trying to be difficult, but if you have such a problem with your child being exposed to differing viewpoints about morality, isn't that the only way to protect them? Surely sex ed isn't the only time this type of thing will come up during their education.

  10. Get this, it may be speculation for YOU, but not how *I* interpret it. And as a soon-to-be-parent, I wouldn't want someone like you with your beliefs on this teaching my child. How's that for speculation?

And get this...nothing you can say, nothing you can scoff at me for, or incorrectly presume will ever change that. We can sit here and post replies to each other all day long. It is not your place, nor the place of others like you, to teach my child what is MY responsibility to teach him, based upon when his father and I...you know, *the parents* actually decide it's best.

You have every right to believe what you want, and what you want to teach *your* kid(s) and when they learn it. Not mine, no ma'am.

    Sounds like home-schooling time!

  11. Guys, quick question - (haven't researched it yet, so might be obvious) are we alien spouses eligible for driver's licenses, or do we have to wait for GC? Just thought about it yesterday when I got carded at a bar and the guy didn't know what to make at first of my Hungarian ID :)

It's different depending on where you are. Some places will NOT give you a DL without the green card or EAD, other places will issue you one with the K1, but it will expire when your I-94 expires. We're waiting until GC or EAD, so we don't have to keep renewing it. Ewan is scared of trying to drive on the right, anyway, poor dear. I'm thinking we'll take him to a parking lot this weekend and practice, whether he likes it or not!

  12. I look like a huge blown-out woodland creature on all my important pictures! The camera does not love me.

Oh and on another note, John and his parents reached my city yest and it was just more than thrilling and exciting to finally get to see them, hug him and squeeze him and kiss him :luv:

We will be leaving India on the 27th.He seems to like the place a lot,and is thinking of living here. Now now,I wish he had made things clear earlier!

I cannot wait to start our lives.

But bummer, my engagement ring is a tad bigger, but its lovely and I cannot wait to resize it and put it on :)

    Love ya all ladies! :luv:

YAY!!!!! I'm so happy your day has come, sweetie! Send us pics of your pretty ring, when you have a chance. I'm glad John is enjoying India. Weeeeee! :star: :star: :star:

  13. Confirmed. The Brits don't know they are born with such cheap telecommunication costs!

Good luck with AOS Naddy. Why do all official photos turn out awful? I don't even look human on my passport pic.

At least we don't live in New Zealand! They have caps on usage because there's just a teensy cable connecting them to the rest of the internetz.

And hey, Mrs. D: Most of us don't realize how cheap our petrol is here (all jokes about BP aside), so the extra you pay for internet/TV/phone, you'll make up for at the pump.

Also, let it be known that I look like an angst-ridden Harry Potter in my passport photo.

  14. Hey buddies! Hope you're all good. I've got only 7 more sleeps to go!

Am totally off-topic here, but to all US citizens, I just want to know what your monthly bill is for TV/phone & internet. I've just been quoted $105 by AT&T a month for basic TV package (just free channels) unlimited long distance calls and internet. Comporium was even more expensive. I think this is my very first culture shock, cos the costs of these things in the UK would be half of that! I cannot believe it! All opinions welcome!

This may not be true everywhere, but anywhere that I've lived, there's basically one company that has a monopoly on the area's cable TV/internet (here in Miami, it's comcast, for example). A total pain in the butt, because they can just charge whatever they want, and you pay it or are out of luck.

Generally, I think you can expect to pay about $50/mo for just internet, but I don't really know about TV or landline phone... Have you thought about just having a cell phone and no landline? That's the route many people are taking, presumably because it's less expensive...

  15. hey guys hope you havnt forgotten me ab are still praying for me to get ours tooo.

    Keep us updated, of course!

Approved and VISA in hand!!!!! We got it in the mail on Thursday. Joseph will arrive in Orlando tomorrow!! We were hoping his POE could be Dublin Airport but not sure if they are there during the weekends but anyway.....he will be here tomorrow. All that waiting, worrying, and speculating is over for now. I know we still have the AOS etc to do but right now I just want to bask in the realization we will finally be together! Thanks everyone for the information and for the support. This forum is a true gem for those seeking VISAs........

Congrats! What lovely news, and what an exciting time. I command you not to worry about the AoS for a little while. Simply enjoy being together, and bask in the realization, also, that you NEVER have to go through the excruciating K1 process again! Enjoy, and tell us all about the wedding

  16. Well, I called my doctor, and he doesn't have a copy of the DS 3025, but he said he can fill out a new one for me and fax it - do you guys think that is acceptable?

Off to errands now - just realized I have to get 6 passport pictures for this.... Immigrations will sure have a lot of pictures of me/us by the time I get my GC :) :)

It's so silly how many they need, isn't it? Especially since they take MORE of them at the biometrics. Seriously, people?!

I'd say that's a good thing to try (with the DS-3025) because it will save you a trip to the civil surgeon, and some money! But make a photocopy just in case!

  17. Hey guys, I am plunging back into the paperwork :) Great thread already Megan!!I have a question: I never got a copy of my DS 3025 - the one form was sealed into the envelope and given to the consulate - and I assume it then made its way into the envelope I gave away at POE. So what do you think I do now? Write a letter explaining this and send a copy of my vaccination records, or should I just suck it up and go to a civil surgeon?I am also confused about my name change - I've been researching it on VJ, but it's very contradictory. I would like to change my name by changing my maiden surname to middle name and taking my husbands (hmmm, first time I called him husband :) ) last name. There was no space on the marriage certificate to indicate the name change, and the SSA people wouldn't let me change it because my name should match the I-94. So do I just file with my new name and hope they register me with it on the GC? I see no other way of "officialy" changing my name. The SSA office I went to, by the way was completely clueless, it took a lot of persistence to even get a card in my maiden name. Thanks!!

Welcome back, KisK! Great to see you again!

I unfortunately can't help you with the name change. I have no idea how to go about that.

As for the DS-3025, I would contact the doctor who did your exam for the K-1, and see if they can fax/mail you a copy of the DS-3025 (just like Naddy suggested) before shelling out the money for a civil surgeon. Otherwise, is there a record you have of your vaccinations elsewhere, or one that you can get? My guess would be that if you don't have any documentation of the vaccinations, they will require you to get ALL of them, which would be a major pain in the a$$ (literally and figuratively!)

Hey megger, I know you had a co sponsor, when you complete your AOS form I864 did you get your dad to compelte the I864A aswell. im so confused as we are using his mom as a co sponsor we are using the assests though not combining income so i am consfused as what to put on both the I864 and I864A

Hmmm, we didn't use that form at all! I'm kind of sketchy on what they mean by "household member." I don't think that is applicable to us (or at least I hope it's not!) We just each filled out the I-864, and ticked the appropriate boxes to indicate "primary sponsor" (or whatever) for me, and "joint sponsor" for my dad. Hopefully that's all that was required!

  18. megger - you made me laugh with your "football" knowledge. I hate it! That's one aspect of UK culture I'm happy to never see again.

Let me know what you girls did with applying for SSN. At what point did Ewan and you Naddy, do it? Before or after AOS application? Some people have had real problems, mostly to do with encountering workers in SSN offices not knowing what they are supposed to be doing, lots of conflicting experiences, some people given the run around, some even getting turned away being told they are not eligible on K1 visas etc.

Aww, football's not so bad if you take Rooney out of it. I mean, just look at the guy! He exudes "douchebag" from every one of his pores! But seriously, it's pretty much the only sport I like watching on TV, and since we only get it (here, at least) once every 4 years, I have to overdose so I don't want it again until 2014!

For the SSN, we filed about 3 weeks after Ewan's arrival, and on the same day that we sent our AoS packet (so post-marriage, but pre-AoS filing). Somewhere (in the VJ downloads section, perhaps) there's a copy of the memo section stating that K-1 holders are eligible for SSN. We printed that and took it with us, but didn't need it. We were processed quite quickly and efficiently. I would suggest you take the memo thingy along with, and if the person working tells you you're not eligible, ask to speak to a supervisor.

The only time frame issue, I think, is waiting for 2 weeks after entry to make sure you're "in the system". Also, if you're changing your name with the marriage, there are a few more steps for the SSN...

  19. They had a piece about this on the radio last night. Basically, they said that in the stadium, the drone is not as distracting as it is on TV, as your ears/brain can tune out certain constant noises and focus on others. Microphones can't do that, so the TV broadcast collects everything and spits it out through the speakers. They are developing a secondary filter for the TV broadcast, which is why the noise is quieter on some stations/broadcasts than others.

For my own part, I don't find it distracting from the game or really that annoying even. After five minutes, I'm able to tune it out. To be fair, though, I'm neither a player nor a spectator in South Africa.
