We applied for a SS card from a K1 fiance visa 20 days after my fiance landed in the US. We were told we weren't in the SAVE-AVI system and would have to wait up to 4 weeks. 4 weeks and 3 days later, no card had arrived in the mail. So, we went back to the SS office. Our case had apparently been halted. They looked us up, said "oh, you're in the system now," and gave us a paper saying we'd get our card within two weeks. BAH! We didn't get any notification that this was the case - in fact our paper said they'd send us our card or a letter if there was a problem.
Anyway, I hope this helps people in our situation.

My (recent) hubby is from Holywood!
Or, as we say it here, "pronounced Hollywood, but with one L."

Congratulations on the wedding and well done Justin & David! A productive day! We're putting all the finishing touches to our wedding now... only 5 days to go!!! I can't wait!
Rito, when I applied for my social security card, I was given a letter saying that if I dont recieve it in 14 days, I should call them or go in with the letter. Did you get one too?
I'll have to dig around for that letter, but the woman did tell us it would be a few weeks because we weren't in the SAVE-AVI system. I called the main social security number today. Total waste of time. After a long time on hold, I said I wanted the status of my case because it had been awhile. The woman I talked to didn't seem to know what to say. She said "Well, you could go back to your local SSN office." "You can't look up the information?" I asked. "Well," she said, "you could go to your local SS office and ask them..." Grr.

we are married!!!!!! and slightly drunk
Well I sure as hell wouldn't want to see you (or anyone) get married sober. Congrats!
Oh, unrelated: 21 days after our SSN appointment and still no card. Boo.

So thankful our only downtime is now when the *poor tired baby* takes naps... at 4:25pm! Can't blame jetlag anymore! ::pats sleeping beneficiary::
Ah well. It's our five year anniversary today... I'll let him sleep.

Hi crisbess,
My husband did walk-in Biometrics at SF USCIS without problem 2 months ago. Just make sure to get there early
You can just go earlier than the date you got in the mail with no problems? Does it speed your application?
I'm also SF.

I think it depends when in the process you try to get the SSN.
Oh, for reference, we filed 19 days after POE (and we weren't in the SAVE-ASVI system yet), after marriage, after filing for AOS/EAD/AP, and way before the I-94 expires.

If anyone wants to see our wedding pics here's a link to our photographers site... there's a lot on there just to warn you! http://roman.smugmug.com/Weddings/Corey-and-Aaron/12416362_EBfVh#888511926_gDrpc
Bless you guys!!
These photos are awesome! You got a fantastic photographer.

Out of curiosity, what did you guys bring in for number 4 below (this is off of VJ's guides for getting an SSN). His birth certificate? We're thinking ahead about this now.
We took his "non-driver's ID." It's not the national ID card, but a form of state-sponsored ID you can get if you don't drive.

Mmmkay. Phill and I went to the local Social Security office last Friday to apply for his SSN. Needless to say we didn't get anywhere.
That sucks! It's so frustrating how it's apparently so different everywhere. When we went to get an SSN in San Francisco, the woman just started working on our file right away. I'd warned my fiance they might not want to give him an SSN, so we brought the rules... at one point while she was filing my fiance said "we have your policy here, if that helps." The woman said "Honey, I know the rules!" Guess not everyone does.

I'm the USC, and I'm going for the alcohol.
Ditto, ditto, and ditto.

Its sad that Ace Pub is no more! That was a true cider pub that also carried random things like abbot ale etc.
What about the Pig and Whistle?
Crazy you should mention that - this is the pub we decided on yesterday! I talked with the owners on the phone. They were definitely British (always a plus) and have a big screen for the game. We'll be there starting at 10am if anyone wants to drop by!

Oh, I just realized that each of the three text messages have receipt numbers that are different by one digit. I guess there's a separate text for each of the three applications; AOS, AP, and EAD.

What are you ladies using? I'm leary of the pill and really like the sound of the IUD, although I don't like the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease...I remember from nursing school that it's a nasty thing to get!
My husband and I had only used condoms before and he's the only person I've had sex with. It just didn't make sense to invest in birth control when we were long distance and I was seeing him so infrequently. But condoms are annoying... you have to remember to have them ready, go buy them when you're out, stop what you're doing to put them on, etc.
So, a month ago (and a few days before POE), I got a Mirena IUD. So far, I'm happy. I had some hives at the beginning for a few days, but they went away. I also had a lot of spot bleeding. But that's normal at the beginning, and over time they're supposed to make your periods less painful and less bloody... something I'd like. So I only have a month to go on, but I'm loving the convenience.
Now that everyone is covering their eyes screaming - I just got my text message "application has been received" notices from USCIS! Woo! They actually sent it three times for some reason... my pocket went DING DING DING during a conversation. Awkward. Anyway, I'm glad our packet's in "safe" hands. We didn't get a tracking number, and I was hoping we'd hear something soon.

Uk?
Are you sure?
I don't know much about football - I got my information from here. It's England rather than UK, if that's what you mean.
there is a pub in Knob Hill (ohh err) called The Chelsea that might be worth checking out
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll scope it out. It's useful to have some recommendations - some pubs here bill themselves as "British" or "Irish," but once inside it's just a regular ol' American football sports bar.
-
The match is the UK vs. the US, so it should be interesting. My British better half and I are getting together with another UK/US couple and going to a yet-to-be-decided English Pub to watch the game. If you're interested, comment or PM me!

Hey, I finally found this thread! You ain't rid of me yet.
My British fiance husband and I filed for AOS (and EAD and AP) last week, on May 26. It all seems less dramatic and scary now that we're actually together, but nonetheless: godspeed USCIS!

Well another option wasn't really presented. The woman took our information and said "he's not in the system, so there will be a bit of delay." I said "Oh, does he need to be manually verified because he's not in the SAVE-ASVI system?" The woman said "yeah...exactly," with a look that really said "dear God you read too many forums."
I guess we could've taken our information back and returned later, but it didn't seem worth it. Waiting in the Social Security Office wasn't much fun, and we'll get SS way before EAD... the only thing we'll be prevented from doing early is getting my fiance a bank account and having him take his driver's permit test. Hardly seems worth it.
Congrats on the approval Leenie!
And by fiance I mean husband. This ###### is going to take awhile to get used to.

Egh, that bites. Did they MAKE you go with manual verification??
My fiance had his interview today and got approved

We applied for our social security number today. Even though it was a full 19 days after my fiance's POE, we weren't in the SAVE-ASVI and will now have a delay because we have to get manual verification from USCIS. Boooo.

Your POE may not be Dublin. My fiance went through Dublin three weeks ago flying Continental to Newark, and he didn't pass immigration until arriving in Newark. It entirely depends on your airline and terminal, and apparently these have changed lately. Continental, for instance, used to do POE in Dublin and now they do not.

I hope your wedding days are fabulous, Beth (Friday), Rito (Saturday) and corcor (Sunday)!
(By the way, Rito, we're also getting married in Vegas, but not by Elvis - my mom would flip! Did you do the online "pre-registration" for the marriage license?)
Yep, we did the pre-registration. The pre-registration form website is horrible, but the Vegas office had it and paying for the license was simple. The website didn't have "Northern Ireland" listed (only England... no UK... #######?), but the office easily fixed it for us.
We got married the following day (Saturday) at a chapel/drive-through that promised they'd send the marriage license to the recorder's office on Monday morning. Monday morning we called the chapel to make sure they'd sent the license (they had), and then we got two certified copies by going to the office in person. It was all really easy. If you want more info about that, PM me and I'll give you the deets.

Quick update here. As K & L correctly states, we got successfully hitched by Elvis in a drive-through in Vegas on Saturday, May 22. The ceremony was so much fun. I dressed up as Carmen Sandiego, my fiance was Waldo, and our two guests were Wesley (from Princess Bride) and Dorothy. The theme here is "lost people who found each other." The ceremony was about 15 minutes long and took place in the back of a pink Cadillac. It was awesome - lots of innocent bystanders became our enthusiastic wedding "guests" to cheer on the unusual ceremony.
So, Carmen Sandiego and Waldo are officially hitched. We sent off our AOS/EAD/AP package today and will apply for SSN this Friday. Yeeeeeeaaaaah.

The first character in our red nonimmigrant visa number is a C. Sources online say a nonimmigrant visa number is only numbers... but this really looks like a C, and it doesn't look like a printing error that would make it a 0. Does anyone else have a letter in this number? What should we write in our I-485? Thanks

I had the same as you - two touches on both EAD and AOS, two days apart! I wonder why no touches on AP, though. I guess AP doesn't require biometrics, unlike the other two.
