Yes, it is typical.  As long as you have the version with the certified translation in the certificate and the official red stamp you are good. 

I can't speak for your visa type, but for my mother-in-law we paid the AOS and IV fee bill and submitted the IV application. A couple days later they sent an email indicating that the GUZ number had changed to a GZO number. We didn't have to do anything. Hope that helps.

My mother in a law has spent most of the past three years here on a B2, basically driving me nuts and covering my kitchen in oil splatter. She is back home now, but she had no difficulty obtaining the tourist visa. I think that they have kind of relaxed the scrutiny on B2s as long as it is not for a younger woman of child bearing age. The sister might have trouble, but the MIL should be fine. Of course, both might be fine, just try and apply. The application fee is not that much. You write up an invitation letter stating all the wonderful things you will see and do while she is here and how she can shop...etc, etc, but don't mention something like "my mother will come and take care of her grandson." They historically don't like this because it is not tourism and it is taking away a potential income from a care provider. These are just some thoughts on the comments I have read over the last few years and my own experience with our family. Good luck!

It raises a question: if it's a marriage based timeline that we're filing under, does the spouse have to attend? Is it mandatory? Just wondering, because it's difficult for my husband to take time away from work. I was going to attend by myself, unless he needs to be there?

It's a very good point. I was told that they WILL scrutinize you more if your spouse is not there, especially at the oath. Our officer said that if your spouse is not present for the oath they will pull you out of line and you have to wait until everyone else is finished and then they further interview you to make sure that all is good. I think if your husband takes the invite letter to his boss he can work something out. I mean, what kind of boss doesn't want his employee's wife to not become an American? Best of luck!

St. Louis, MO. This field office seems like no one is ever there, except for once during a biometrics trip.

Hi all, my wife (and I) had her interview on Thursday morning. I will give a brief review and hope it is informative, but I imagine that there will be wide differences in experience. We arrived about 15 minutes early at the field office and were instructed to place her interview letter in a mail slot. Right at 8:15am she was called back and I was told to also come along. Our cell phones were locked away and we were led to an office. We both were asked to swear the truth and to be seated. The officer said that she likes to get the test out of way first so she quickly administered the written and spoken test followed by the civics test (stopping after the sixth question). She then went through the application and reasked all of the questions. She did an ID check, comparing the photos from the passport, greencard, and drivers license. She asked both of us what we do for a living, about our son, about my previous marriage, and then some generic conversation. She stated that since the naturalization was based on marriage and since I was present and all of our paperwork was in order that she was recommending my wife for approval. She did ask for pictures of our family together...which we did not take. She said it was not required, she just likes to see those things in a file. She said a letter would be mailed to us letting us know when the oath ceremony would be held and stressed that I should be there because they will essentially reinterview everyone at the oath. I was surprised by this, and she said that you would not believe the number of people who commit a crime, file for divorce, ect in the month between approval and oath. If you are lucky to have an office that provides same day oath this will not be an issue for you. All in all, the whole process took 15 minutes and not the 2 hours that the letter said it would take, so we went and had a nice breakfast before heading off to our respective jobs. I hadn't received a notification for being placed in line for the interview, so i decided to check my status on USCIS and apparently, i was placed in line for interview scheduling on August 7th. Just curious- anyone know why i didn't receive a notification? Outside of the e-notification, do they mail out a letter saying you have been placed in line?

Also, how will they communicate the interview date? will that be an e-notification too? or will they mail a letter?

here's the official wording.

Testing and Interview

On August 7, 2014, your N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION was placed in line for interview scheduling. When scheduling is complete, you will receive a notice with a time and place for your interview. If you have not received the notice within 90 days of the date above, please call customer service at 1-800-375-5283 for further assistance. Please check our website at www.uscis.gov for further updates on your case. If you move, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address.

We did not receive a letter indicating placed in-line, but did receive the text message. You will receive a letter indicating your interview date. We received the yellow letter yesterday and at first thought it was an RFE, but it is normal.

I have often seen the risky habit of generalization of Chinese women in these forums. My wife and I were just talking about this and she feels that this is a problem that has to be solved together and it is not just his problem or her problem. If she is not willing to fight for the relationship, then my wife feels that she might have a different motivation for marrying this man. She needs to be involved and be positive about her new life. If she cannot do this, then perhaps she needs to go back home. Every relationship will have troubles and struggles, but in the end if she wants this new life then she will look for things and ways to make the relationship work. Of course, we are only hearing one side of the story and the Chinese perspective is often totally different than the American perspective. Good luck.

AOS is for most couple a direct and simple process. I would add that many lawyers are not as up to date on the constantly changing requirements, they don't have "skin" in the game, and will not be allowed to be present in the event of an interview. You will pay for a paralegal to transcribe your own work at a very handsome rate. We had the wrong copy of our marriage certificate (had the license instead) and we were allowed to run down to the courts building and bring it back the same day. So even in our case the simple problem was quickly resolved. You will be fine if you want to be fine, and can burn your money if you choose to do so. Best of luck!

I just know how I'd take it, in the same situation. I'm not sure how a man from Chinese culture would take this situation. I would think even in their culture this would sound like a dire situation though.

For those of us married to a Chinese wife, I can with high probability say that no one else is in this guy's similar situation. I have said this a number of times that you can not really generalize Chinese women (maybe you can in those over 40 that lived during the Cultural Revolution), even though some people try to run off the list of the "traditional" qualities...blah, blah, blah. My wife is in nursing school and she does ignore me these days because she is very focused on doing her best, but she reminds me that we will make up the lost time and she takes breaks after exams for family time. I don't worry about what she is up to because we talk before we go to bed and she tells me about her day and the gossips she hears. This is a normal relationship and one that the OP should strive to look for some day, but it is not going to appear with this current woman. Unfortunately, she seems to have other ideas about what she wants in life and is using him as a vehicle.

The closest thing to this that I have seen is the "over-bearing" Chinese wife syndrome. However, I have only seen this in dual native Chinese couples living here in the US. I work at a medical school, so it is usually a male post-doc that has brought his wife along to the "land of Disney riches" to live on his $35K salary. Once the allure of America is gone and the reality of life on a budget sets in, the wife "encourages" the husband to finish his post-doc so that he can look for a lucrative industry or faculty position and make money. She may seem self-centered, but she is really looking out for the future of her family, even though it usually involves a lot of complaining about a lack of ability to buy a new iPad or Coach purse.....

The OP is asking if a flight booking is required to obtain a visa. Your response is ambiguous on that point. So I've added three letters so that you can clarify

Which of the following is the requirement?

(A and B) or C ==> no flight booking required if C is provided with visa application

or

A and (B or C) ==> flight booking is always required

I am not sure how my post is ambiguous? Rather is is specific and exact as the information comes directly from the Chinese consulate. I think the addition of a logic pseudo-notation is what adds a layer of ambiguity. Anyway, I think he has the knowledege to proceed.

Just a word of advice, if things do work out with receiving a K1 in December. You will need to be married, apply for AOS and receive AP before heading back to China for the CNY or you will find your new wife stuck in China. Just making sure that you are aware of this. Best of luck.

You can get a visa, you will just need to do the following based on the new rules:

for L Visa

Provide documents showing the itinerary including air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation, etc. or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China. The invitation letter should contain:

(1) Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)

(2) Information on the planned visit (arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, etc.)

(3) Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)

You need to clarify your situation because you are listed as a K1, but you are saying "wife." What is your actual status? She may need to demonstrate some ties or deposit something with CITIC as collateral. I have only dealt with in-law B2 issues. Best of luck.

I am sorry for those that have had B2 denials in the past and recently, depending on your country of origin. However, I can tell you that in the past a B2 for an unmarried female from China was extremely difficult, even for in-laws it was tough. I am not sure what is going on diplomatically, but can tell you that they have eased off significantly with many applicants as long as things look in order and no fraud is suspect. My MIL has come to the US three times in the past two years and the process was quite simple and she was given a 6-month stamp each time. Again, I think that it is mainly political.

I agree with what some others have said, but also agree that while it may seem straightforward to generalize Chinese "behaviors" you really can not generally apply them. My wife (Chinese) only falls into the bin of respecting her parents in front of their face, but happily voices her opinions when they are not around. General respect, not control from afar. I find that Chinese women fall all along the spectrum of personalities and you have to choose if you want to conform to this relationship. While we do have some down days, I can honestly say that my marriage is easy because we both work at it and resolve our issues and build for our future...as a couple. I am fond of saying that nothing in life is set to a defined path, we have the choice to be content or to change and become something better. Good luck!
