IMHO it stems from people with too much time in their hands, which affords them the luxury of minding the sex lives of others... If everyone took care of their own sex life with the same gusto as they do others' the world might be a better place...
In the case of Muslims, in particular, it seems many still get perplexed by finding out that Muslims are no different than anyone else and there is a positive side to this obsession: it give us insight into a culture and religion that has been subjected to many unjust and untrue criticism. On a positive note, the more we learn about that which we don't know, the better off we are in that we begin to perceive that down here on the ground we are just people trying to make the best of/with our lives. The more we know the better we are at keeping ignorance - the mother of all prejudice - at bay.

what i want to know is where does the non-muslim obsession with muslims' sex lives come from?
there are lots of people right here in the us who have similar cultural/religious guidelines regarding sexual behavior. but it doesn't spark nearly as much interest or speculation. why is that?

It has nothing to do with religion.
    Zip. Zero. Zilch.
    It's a legal issue.
    Unmarried sex is illegal.
A baby is evidence of unmarried sex.
It's the father's job to register his child's birth.
He's not going to register a birth and implicate himself in a crime.

Sometimes, when governments fail to do what is right, extraordinary people have stepped up to personally take the initiative to do what needs to be done. They are heroes.

    Hind al-Husseini
Hind al-Husseini (1916-1994), born in Jerusalem, was a dedicated Palestinian social activist and humanist. In April 1948, she found fifty-three orphaned children - survivors from the massacre at Deir Yassin - who had been literally dumped along the wall of the Old City.
    In her own words:
At first she fed and sheltered these children in two rooms inside the Old City. Then on April 25, 1948, she founded an orphanage and school, Dar el-Tifl el-Arabi (Home of the Arab Child,) in her house.
Before 1967, additional buildings were constructed and eventually Dar el-Tifl cared for 350 orphans and 1,600 day students. Miss al-Husseini directed its activities for 46 years, until her death in 1994. Dar el-Tifl still remains.

Out of wedlock children are shameful and shame/honor is huge. We as Americans can't understand this. We can't put our ideas on ppl who have this honor/shame thing so deeply imbedded in themselves. There's really no point in even trying. I told you about my old friend and her daughter, Kat. She completely stopped trying to have her daughter's father in her life. Didn't bother with his culture either. Today she's a gorgeous, intelligent 18 yr old girl who is about to graduate from high school. Her father missed out on her life. His loss. This girl is well rounded and happy without any involvement from her sperm donor of a father. I wouldn't bother with your daughter's father. If you want to expose her to his culture that's fine but I wouldn't worry about any of the other stuff. Being half Moroccan (or any other kind of MENA) isn't a form of prestige IMO. It's a nationality/ethnicity. Personally, I don't look at my kids as being half Arab - they're my kids. I don't get a sense of pride because my kids are half Arab. My pride comes from being their mother because of the wonderful, intelligent kids they are not what kind of blood is flowing through their veins.

Yeah, that's the thing-- they will try to give a religious justification a lot but it's totally cultural... but then some just give cultural justification so I was curious what the party line was.
It is totally a women's activity, enforced, sponsored, and perpetuated by women. It has a lot to do with social control.
    I know, right?

For real? Who answers the door in a towel? I'm sure he never answered the door naked in Egypt. So the question is, why here in the U.S then? After this event, I hope you educated your husband that, sure, you have the freedom to do that in the U.S. but you just don't anwser the door nakkid!!!! Simply not good etiquette regardless or nationality, religion, age or sex.
Agreed, I don't answer my door either unless I'm expecting you or if I know you. I don't care if they see me peeking out the window to see who they are. I should start waving and staring at them until they leave LOL Really though, I was thinking about a 'no solicitor' sign. Anyone try that?
As for answering the door in a towel, I thought that only happened on tv or in the movies.
    Amen, sista!! Well said.

Okay okay...I suppose if I was in the shower and I heard some horrid shriek outside and it turns out (God forbid) one of my kids or someone elses kids being hurt, then I may run outside in towel (or less) to make sure they were okay but like you said, Julianna, only under special circumstance.

Actually, Mormon missionaries follow a strict schedule. They wake up at 6:30 am, study for an hour and 1/2, have breakfast and do not leave the house until 8am at the earliest. They would not, under any circumstances, have knocked on your door at 6am. But I guess it makes for a better story though if those pesky Mormons wake you up before dawn...
I do think that many religions struggle with how to approach teaching about sexuality. And as I'm sure you understand, some religions, including Islam (and those pesky Mormons), consider sex something that should be enjoyed only inside a marriage. And the real blame lies with the individual. If men and women who were abstinate prior to marriage choose not to educate themselves about sex once inside their marriage - that is not the fault of the religion...its the fault of the individual. The truly "open minded" or "progressive" people are confident enough in their own beliefs that they don't have to mock or feel frustrated with the views of others. True "progressives" accept the views and choices of all people...including those "archaic" religious views that teach abstinence before marriage...pesky as it may seem.

i just don't answer my door when i'm alone at home, unless i know who it is. after about a minute, anyone i don't want to answer the door for just goes away. whether they want to sell me a security system, landscaping services or salvation. i had no idea things could be so...complicated.
out of all the people i know who don't share my religious beliefs, or don't have any religious beliefs at all, i don't think i know any that would answer their front doors topless, or in towels. there are clearly other factors involved.

I wallowed in self pity for way too many years that I would like to admit. Then when I finally got to the point of not knowing what to do with myself, I got help and found out that nobody is going to care about me until I care about MYSELF.
Keep going to therapy and working on your self worth. The most important person in your life should be YOU.
    Stay strong.
