  1. This has definitely been a good learning thread.

I personally have no desire to get a credit card when I move. I'll probably just get one with my fiance for credit's sake so we can eventually get a mortgage or whatever... but I have no reason to get one otherwise when I get there since the debit card has a visa symbol on it and I can use that as a credit card online if I want to.

I've FINALLY almost paid off my Canadian card so I'm debt free when I move and refuse to ever owe credti card companies money ever again.

Great plan  Im not going to use my american one at all if I get approved. I just want it to establish a credit rating so when we apply for a mortgage, I dont have to worry as much.

I'll just use the card once a month to buy a pack of gum or whatever, and pay it off right afterwards.

  2. I also always wish for a male officer at the POE, they always seem nicer to me!

Seriously! I have yet to encounter a female officer that isnt snarky, or rude.

Amanda I swear she sounds like my old boss. She would confront you in front of the whole dept, loudly too with a smirk on her face. Like I'd walk in, not even take off my coat yet and she'd say "Jill, did you do so and so like I asked YESTERDAY?!" It was so awful, so many staff members spoke to HER superiour about it he made her take a class with a management company.

I also always wish for a male officer at the POE, they always seem nicer to me!

I find male officers are nicer to girls and the females are nicer to guys. Its really strange.

LOL! Yep, Whenever I cross and Im in line waiting for the next agent to go to, Im always eager and hoping its one of the male's.

  3. I used to work for a collection agency and we had a 3 day seminar at equifax in Toronto.

A soft enquiry does not hurt your credit. These are often done by companies who you already have accounts with who want to see if you qualify for a credit limit increase without your consent and just offer it to you. Just to see if you are OK with your other bills. If you ask for the increase, sometimes they will do a soft enquiry or a hard enquiry. Try to ask for a soft one to be done.

Hard enquires are when you apply for a loan, credit card, etc.

When I worked for CitiBank, my job was to actually perform soft pull enquiries to check to find ways to lower peoples credit limits that were at risk. And when we did that it never affected their credit ratings.

Oh just wanted to add... andyeah, it is true that multipe enquires do lower your score (at least in Canada, it lowers your FICO score). However, if you do it all within a short period of time (within a day) it just shows you as 'credit shopping' and for some reason it doesnt affect your score. At least thats what we were taught 7 years ago

  4. Do you think I can apply for a Target card when I go visit him during my next visit, even though I havent even applied for my visa yet? Would I have to put my address (canadian) or his?

I wont even be applying for the visa for another 10 months (once we get married), but Id love to have established US credit by the time I get down.

  5. I completely agree Amanda about the male vs. female boss. The 2 females bosses I had were such beeotches, rude, awful, strict. The men were awesome, I don't know what it is with women bosses. Perhaps they go on a power trip or something. I always prefer a male boss and co-workers sometimes too, as there is much less drama to deal with.

Hey Nev does Silk City Diner have a patio!? We should all meet there this spring and enjoy some bevvies :D

LOL! Im the same way too with female's. I dont know, most seem to just have a lovely b!tchy ego. Hence why I also like to go through a male POE officer lol - they are a lot nicer

  6. Everything feels like an extension of highschool.

    Good. Effin. Point.

I have felt like this so much lately.

It gets OLD and TIRESOME. Why can't people just grow up and get over stuff? Why must people go out of their way to play mind games with you and put you down? I wonder is this sometimes cultural, societal or maybe just up to the individual? My boss is one of the most rude, inconsiderate people I've ever met in my life. Does it have anything to do with her being Jewish? Now don't take this at all the wrong way because New Jersey has a huge Jewish population and there are a lot of "stereotypes" that most believe to be a reality. Or, is it because she is just unfulfilled and lashing out at the youth in her office?

Any ways, I'm sick of this highschool stuff. Aren't we all tired enough doing our jobs? Why do I want to put up with this mama-drama at my work place.

Stiggy-Sorry to hear about your long divorce. I hope everything goes more smoothly for you soon.

Aw, sorry to hear you are going through taht ####### at work. Thats the last mood you want to bring home after work.

  7. Not food... but, are you able to find J Cloth in your area? After looking in a few stores in the US, I gave up and brought some during my next trip...

No they don't sell them in the US, I actually e-mailed JCLOTH headquarters in Mississauga. My Mom brought me 6 boxes at Christmas time. I looked all over for them as I was fed up of the crappy cloths here, Jcloths are da bomb!

I better put that on my 'stock up list' for when I move

  8. So.......my ex dh (darn husband) is a huge dimwat! The idiot loves to play games with his lawyer, and my lawyer decided to provide proof to his lawyer about him lying and contradicting himself and his lawyer didnt even wanna see it. So... I am sick and tired of trying to negotiate on assets/debts outside of court (because he cant afford for it to go court) but at this time Im done with it. Im SO lookin forward to going to court!

The dimwat doesnt want me to touch any of the pension, doesnt want me to have equity of the house, doesnt want to pay me spousal support (ive been a stay at home mom for 6 years), and on top of it wants me to take on a big amount of the matrimonial debt. Nuh-uh! I told him the best I would do is drop the pension and my half of the equity of the house, and he can have the debt.

This divorce is drivin me batty - my doc gave me a lovely supply of anxiety meds

Thank God our wedding isnt planned until next February - because I dont see this divorce gettin finalized in the next few months. Its been 15 months now of battling it out with negotiations. I just want OUT of this seperation and finally marry my soul-mate.

  9. LOL, yes, last post here either means Dear Husband or Damn husband. Mine was ex-damn husband.

But yes, its nce of him to watch the kids while I head down south to see my sweety.

My friends are all convinced hes gonna officially pop the question this visit. But I really think its gonna be the 4th of July visit.

I can only hope and dream  lol

  10. That see ID thing is a good idea.

I remember the first time I saw that working in retail , I was being trained.. and I turn to my trainer and go "what do i do? ) and he looked at me and goes "check ID dear" lol.

  11. 2 more weeks till I go visit my honey! Its been 4 months since the last time we saw eachother since he had to go back on his tour oversea's.

Now im just nervous about POE at the airport - hard to say 'I dont work' when they ask what I do, lol (im a stay at home mom - living off child support (get a good chunk), child tax benefit until I get the CR1 once we apply and if approved.

So Im gonna bring my return ticket, my travel insurance, custody papers (ex dh will watch the kids), and my bank statement showing my mortgage payment, and bills that I pay online.

  12. I'm looking for some help on getting "Evidence of a Bonifide Marriage" for my I-130 (AoS from B2 visa).

    1. Documentation showing joint ownership or property; or None

    2. A lease showing joint tenancy of a common residence; or Because I don't have a SSN they wouldn't put me on our lease until I have one.

    3. Documentation showing co-mingling of financial resources; or We sent a form to his bank to add me to his bank account but they are taking a LONG time to do it.

    4. Birth certificate(s) of child(ren) born to you, the petitioner, and your spouse together; or None

    5. Affidavits sworn to or affirmed by third parties having personal knowledge of the bona fides of the marital relationship (Each affidavit must contain the full name and address, date and place of birth of the person making the affidavit, his or her relationship to the petitioner of beneficiary, if any, and complete information and details explaining how the person acquired his or her knowledge of your marriage); or We are co-renting with my husbands best friend and wife so they are obviously aware of our marriage. We can go to the lawyer on the military base and get something like this but I'm not sure what we should write in the affidavit.

    6. Any other relevant documentation to establish that there is an ongoing marital union. What else can we use? I just came here in January and got married in February. We really don't have much together because I don't have a SSN and they won't add me to anything. He did put onto his medical insurance (tri-care) at work. Would that also be proof?

Back history - No, I did not intend on getting married when coming here. I came here Jan 16, 2009 and we got married Feb 10, 2009.

So your saying that in 25 days you met and fell in love with the partner of your dreams?

If so, then you may be having problems demonstrating that it is a bonifide marriage because perhaps its not????

Good luck with it all anyway.

love doesn't required times, there are people out there who fell in love at first sight. One day is all it takes to fall in love, you're saying 25 days is not enough to fall in love? then you should get a reality check

I wonder why the divorce rate is so high too after people truly get to know eachother

  13. That's it, get him hooked early! When will he get his first pair of skates? :)

My husband doesn't believe me that Canadian kids get skates on their feet almost as soon as they learn to walk. The poor man has never ever learned to skate! Poor deprived child...

LOL! Yeah... when I told him how my friend teaches skating to two year old hes like "huh?"

  14. Yeah the trip to the consulate is gonna be costly too... I have to go from nowhere Nova Scotia to Montreal, and spend a couple extra nights there too and pay for the hotel because they dont do medicals here in halifax anymore. Im estimating Ill be paying about $250 airfare, $250 medical, $250 hotel, plus food, etc. Thank god ill miss that hpv shot by a few months of the cut off, or that would have been a few hundred more tacked on
