this is an interview with a former adjudicator at the USCIS. It answers some questions about what happens at the USCIS office. Read through the whole thing. He talks about RFE's and getting a congressman involved.

That is the processing time for the I-601 ?

My waiver is already done... Just waiting to get approved by the USCIS and goto our interview.... I have been ready for this since the day I filed.... It is so frustrating just sitting here waiting

There was a post a long time ago from a former USCIS employee. He gave some insight on how things were done. I wish I could find it. With that said, of course it is 2013 and things are worse than ever.
I do understand why they don't give too much status detail... then people would be calling asking for MORE information. They probably want to stay as general as they can because everyone works at a different pace. Some cases are easy as pie and others require RFE's or addition background checking. It makes sense for them to go in order, but I would rather the processor move on to other files instead of sit there waiting for answers on the cases that are holding them up. I agree 100% for more detailed status on the USCIS page. All we want to know is if our case is being worked on... not sitting in a cold cement storage unit in an unlabled crate..
Does anyone kinow how extensive the background check is? My new employer did a background check on me at the same time I filed our petition. It took 3 weeks for my employment check to be finished. It could be a big deal if the US government is checking on information in all the other countries. and don't forget the countries they consider HIGH RISK. My petition is going to be examined with a fine toothed comb as this is my second time petitioning. I am not worried, there is nothing to hide... I just know it will probably take longer. Even though you have to provide divorce decrees etc... I'm sure they are checking all of that. I know in Costa Rica, its like pulling teeth to get any government office to move faster than a dead snail...

Don't get on here and tell the posters they are jerks as EVERYONE who posted was reacting to the attitude given by your GF. She wasn't getting the answers she wanted to hear and seemed unwilling to do her own research. Everyone is more than willing to help where they can but the smartazz attitude was too much

If you read the guides as suggested.... you would know the forms you need AND if you visit the USCIS site, it is spelled out there too. If you don't want to research and prepare then I suggest finding an immigration attorney who can do everything for a LARGE fee
Nobody here will put up with attitude. We are all here to help and support each other.
I get the "feeling" you are getting married to keep someone in the states legally...... but just so you know.... being married doesn't automatically grant a greencard.
If I were you, I'd be asking different questions ...... and I'd be researching the co-sponsor and the actual cost of the entire process. Its not just about getting married and letting everything fall into place.
    just sayin'
