  1. I moved out right after I received my GC. I live in an apartment with my husband.

I wonder if it will affect my removing conditions.

In addition, did you have an interview for that?

My husband will go back to school in Fall. His income might be smaller than current income because he will take some loans.

I wonder if he still have to earn more than poverty line.

I work now, and we do not even have a child and we are not planning to have one at all.

    Please let me know.

  2. I have a question. I came to the US with a K1 visa in June 2008. Until May in 2008, I was working in Japan.

I got my GC in Dec 10th 2008. I have been working in the US since November 2008.

My husband and I are planning to file jointly. Do I have to claim my income in Japan? I was paying tax monthly there.

And my husband says I do not need to claim my income because it was low.

I made only about 4000. That's it. since then I was unemployed because of EAD.

  3. Thank you so much. I have been depressed by taking this job. The company hired me as a full time and they rarely give me a shift. and I make such a little amount of money and I feel like I am useless.

I do not want to depend on my husband. I got my degree and now all I need is experience.

I hope that things will get better soon.

What did you do when you first came to the US? I know it is so hard for immigrants to get a job.

  4. I came to the US in June 08 and married my husband. I got my EAD in Nov. It was really hard for me to find a job because I had never worked in the US except a campus job when I went to college here.

I did not have professional references.

Now, I got a job for a hotel. It is not the best job I can get, but I am being a hostess at a restaurant in the hotel and do some customer service. I get a lot of Japanese guests.

I feel horrible for doing this job with my education, but you know, I had to start from somewhere. I have been working for the company for about two months now. I have no idea how long I will be here, but I am trying to get some good references. Am I doing the right thing? It is the most well known resort company.

I feel that I cannot see my future. It is so dark and depressing. I make such a little amount of money. And sometimes I am not sure what I am doing right now will take me to a better job.

  5. I had a really hard time finding a job. I grabbed whatever possible for me. Even though I have a BA from university in US, lacking of US working experience made everything very hard.

I put some of my professors' names and some of my friends. But, you know they do not really know what kind of employee I can be. They just know me.

So, I grabbed a job which was not the best job for me. But, I get to know a lot of people and I am trying to build a good work relationship with my boss, so I can put her on my reference list.

    What do you really mean,

it is not what you know, it is who you know ?

A lot of people who I work with say the same thing.

Do you mean that a lot of employers do reference check to decide if they want to hire me or not?

Do you mean you get a job through people you know?

  6. Hello everyone! How are you?

I have been working for my first job in the US for more than a month now.

It is not the job that I like, but I had to accept it to get a better job.

What is your first job in the US?

How long did you work there until you changed your job?

Do you have your own insurance? I am trying to get my insurance through my work, but

it depends on how many hours they will give me.

    Please share your experience.

  7. Hi, I just wonder if anyone here works at a bank. I am interested in getting a job at a bank

next year. I just started my new job in the US, and now I am building my working experience in the US.

Once I get enough experience, I want to apply for a job.

Please let me know how you get a job and what you do and what I need to have to get a job.

I have never worked at a bank, but I am thinking about taking one banking class to be ahead.

Also I have a BA from California State University.

    Please let me know.

  8. I really appreciate everyone's comments:) This site has been a great help for me.

I have been married my husband for about 6 months now. It has been a struggle because I faced a lot of

culture shocks, lived with my mother in law and I felt so lonely.

I had a lot of unhappy things, complains and always envied people around me especially those who married domestically and had total supports from both sides of families. Since I chose an international marriage and plus, my family has not been very satisfied about my decision. It bothered me a lot. People around me can get a lot of supports from their family members and do not work so hard to get a house, a car or whatever. I envied them:(

But, now, it does not help me at all if I keep being so negative. I have to move forward and I decided to be more positive:)

I appreciate my family who raised me.

I appreciate my husband who supports me so much.

I appreciate that I can have a job now. It is not the best job, but better than none. There are so many people who have been struggling right now. I should be happy with the way I am now.

I will try to be as positive as possible.

Let's encourage each other. I hope this crazy economy will get better soon.

    Happy Holidays:)

  9. I totally understand you. My husband works full time, but I just do not want to depend on him so much.

I started making some money and try to save as much as possible. I hate my current job, but I have to stick around

    until the economy gets back:)

I am also thinking about taking some accounting and business classes at community college for my future career.

I cannot stand this customer service type job. I want to have finance type jobs in the future. So I will brush up some of my skills.

  10. Thank you so much everyone.

I do not expect money from my parents, but I totally understand that my parents want to help me out unless his parents offer the same thing. It is just different and I do not even expect anything from my husband's parents because they cannot.

My brother in law married a really rich girl and now he gets a free wonderful expensive place to live and can get a lot of free things. His wife's parents are too generous and his parents can take an advantage of it.

But, my parents are super strict and they are not going to let us do that. It is totally fine for me.

    Every family is different.

I just feel sad and wish I could have a in laws who are financially at least stable.

  11. I am not sure how everyone's parents feel about international marriage.

I married USC and he has been a wonderful person. BUT, he is from a family which is very different from

my family. I grew up in Japan and my parents are very hardworking and supported me to get education in the US.

They paid for my education in the US( undergraduate)

and also they always save money and organize things for the future.

I lived with my grand parents and great grand mother. We all lived together and shared.

My dad worked so hard to get his career and my mother works held her own career as an independent woman until recently. My family said education is the most important thing that they can give to their children.

Now, my family grew up with a single mother. She has been divorced twice and has been dating several men.

She could not even pay for his education, but she spends a lot of money on her brand bags and fancy cloths.

His father cannot help financially either.

My parents are very disappointed by my decision to marry my husband. He graduated from really good college. But,

a family as a whole, his family is very different from my family. And my parents are not even planning to come to the US and meet my husband's parents. They did not participate on my small wedding either.

And one time, I was so stressed out by my husband's debts from his college years, My mother told me that if his parents cannot come up with the same amount of money my family comes up, she will not going to help out. It is not just fair.

I totally understand that. It sounds like my husband's parents try to take an advantage of my family.

So, of course we will never be able to get a house or anything.

I started saving my income for our future down payment. Also we are thinking about moving to a different place where things are cheaper.

    How are your parents?

  12. I was so bored for about 4 months. And I was living with my mother in law which drove me crazy. I decided to be alone

and watched DVD and some you tubes.

I could not stand it. First, she asked me to go to Yoga with her. Well, it did cost a lot of money and I did not even bring enough money. I saved pretty good amount of money, but I had to pay my own air ticket, pay for all medical matters, AOS fees and etc. And immediately I had no money. I could not get any help from my parents because they are not very happy about my marriage anyways.

And my husband's parents are divorced and have no money except debts.

I did not even have money to go out and have fun, so all I did was to stay at home and watch TV and read.

  13. Anyone having a hard time finding a decent job?

I recently got a job which pays me about $10 per hour and really irregular hours.

The economy is horrible and they keep cutting people's hours.

It makes me go inane. I have no help from my family anyways, so I will do my best.

(My parents are not very happy about my marriage)

Well, do you want to share your experience?

I really hope that things will get better soon. And as an immigrant, it is very hard to do everything alone, but

this community has been helping me so much.

  14. I was almost crying while I was reading everyone's comment. I had the same problem. I got my EAD in November.

The economy has been so bad. I have a BA from American university, but because I do not have working history in the US, I could not even get a job. I even applied for Macy's and they did not even count my working experience in Japan and offered me a minimum wage. It pissed me off.

I then applied for Disneyland. And I got a job after a few weeks. Absolutely, this is not the job I can enjoy.

I am already sick of it, but I have to deal with it because I am so desperate for money.

Once the economy gets back, I am planning to apply for banks to be a loan officer. I eventually want to go to grad school, but I have to save enough money first.

And I am hoping that I can move to a different state. I live in Orange County Ca. This is insane. I cannot even afford anything. This is not a place I want to live.

  15. I took me a while to get a job. I still do not have a decent job even though I have a BA from American university. The job market is horrible right now. It is just so hard to find a job. And also as an immigrant, it is super hard to get a job without having working experience in the US.

Right now I work at Disneyland which I do not like it at all. I do not get enough hours. But, I have to be patient until things get better.

Seriously it drives me insane. But, what can I do?

I want to go back to school and take some computer classes, but I have to wait to be a CA resident. Otherwise I have to pay over 200 dollars per unit.

In next summer, I will be considered as a CA resident. So we will see.

  16. Thank you very much everyone. I hope I can find something in the near future.

My husband and I are really thinking about moving to a different location after he finishes his grad school.

So hopefully until then, I can get some skills. I am seriously thinking about taking computer classes and getting a job as a administrative assistant or something like that.

  17. I majored communication studies. But, I have never really worked before. I only worked on campus cafe during my senior year and went back to my home after graduation.

Now, I started a low level job at Disneyland which pays me about 10 dollars with less than 20 hours per week. Sadly I am still looking for a decent job.

My husband will go back to grad school from fall. He will try to get a teaching position as soon as possible.

Of course he will continue his work at his company.

I am interested in finance, but right now it is not a good time to go in.

We hope that we can save up some money and move to a different place besides orange county CA. I really hate this location. Everything is super expensive and not even possible for regular people to get a home or anything.

  18. I finished my AOS successfully. I did not have any trouble. Now, I am seriously insanely depressed. The US economy is seriously screwed. And now, I am having a super super hard time to get a decent job.

I recently got a job at Disneyland. Oh my god, this is super depressing. I am not even getting enough hours because those Disney hotels are not making any money. I was hired as a full time. Now, I have a way less than 20 hours to work. It is so hard to survive. It is insane. I do not understand why they hired me at the first place.

Now, I have no idea what to do.

I have a BA from American university. So I am thinking about taking a computer class to brush up my skill.

In the future, I am thinking about being an immigration officer or having a finance related job.

    Can anyone share experience?
