  1. Hi! Anyone got this experience?

I got my GC and Social security card a few months ago now... FINALLY I have found a job, but my new employer told me DHS returned a tentative nonconfirmation on the SSN and A no provided under the E-verify program... Why can that happen? Could it be that the SSN and GC have not been matched yet for some reason? or that some file still needs updating in Vermont or wherever my GC came from??

I am very worried that I will lose my just-found job! :crying:

Perhaps a typo from the employer or from USCIS? I am quite sure the employer entered the right numbers though.. although I am not sure about the name spelling...

Any advice? Anyone got that before? What happens next?

  2. Went a few days ago to change my "Temp": showed them my GC, paid $10, and was told I will receive a standard one... Not sure what's going on anymore! We will see in a few weeks when I get it. This whole thing is so silly. The trick is, don't renew or issue a DL without a green card if they are so scared about illegals... as if that will stop them from driving! We shouldn't be discriminated upon because of "them": we are legal and we got our DL like anyone else....

  3. Tjere are different rules for Canadians than for everyone else probably.

Also, you got the "regular" kind perhaps because this was before the end of last year? I think this is a new law. When you have to renew it, if you are not a US citizen by then, probably you will get the "foreign" kind too..

I'm wondering why you had to take a written and driving test. Was your UK license still valid? I walked in, paid them, and got a paper license. They took my Canadian driver's license at that time. About a week or so later, my Texas driver's license showed up in the mail. I got the regular kind like US citizens get.

No written test. No driving test..... Oddly enough, I got a 7 year license. Can't complain about that. You're supposed to get a 6 year license. Oh well. :)

I used my 2 year green card as proof of status.

  4. I got it last month with the TEMPORARY VISITOR notation (and yes, I do have a green card). And it is VERTICAL instead of HORIZONTAL.... Pretty nasty, if you ask me. I hope they repeal this law.

Let me know if anyone else with a green card got the same DL from TX..

Betti, do you have a "regular" license or does it have the Temporary Visitor designation? I'm still trying to find out what to expect...
  5. I'd like to comment on the Texas provision.

I think it is discriminatory to give legal residents a different-looking driver license, marked "TEMPORARY VISITOR" especially when you are a legal PERMANENT resident! However I do agree with tying the issue of a driver license to legal rights to reside here.

I think what they could do is to issue a driver license that has the same expiration as your legal rights to stay, but without marking that in a different spot or with the stupid "TEMPORARY VISITOR" notation.. Also, the shape of the driver license should be the same. My driver license has the full legal validity, but since I hadn't received my green card yet when I got it, my temporary visitor status expires 1 year from my entry with IR-1 visa..

  6. I think it is a Texas thing only... I guess over here they feel non-US citizens are more of a problem than in WA....

I see where they are coming from, but still I think they could have handled that better, starting from the VERTICAL driver license, that looks so different from the standard horizontal one!

really? my husband entered on an IR-1 visa in december 2008. then got his license january 2009. he doesn't have any restrictions on it. is it different for different states? We live in Seattle, Washington.
  7. Just found this article...

    http://www.alipac.us/article3739.html

    :reading:

Now I understand why I got a "DIFFERENT" driver license!! Definitely feels discriminatory to me...

I don't mind that they check my status for my DL, but why don't they simply issue me with a normal DL with a shorter expiry date????? And next time I go renew it they can check again about my status...

I just think it is silly and discriminatory to have a different shape and TEMPORARY VISITOR in big red letters, also because I am NOT a temporary visitor but a PERMANENT RESIDENT, just not a US citizen!!

  8. Don't know about the address thing, but I entered Texas 1 month ago, got 2 welcome letters, but still no greencard...

The RECEIPT date on the welcome notice is 10 days after I entered; the notice date varies depending on whether it is welcome notice 1, welcome notice 2, etc... ;-)

If I don't get my GC by 30 days of the RECEIPT DATE, I will call them.

I CANNOT track online with the SRC receipt date no for some reasons... they told me maybe because it is too recent (sounds like typical nonsense!)

    Good luck with USCIS!

  9. Checked with AUTOCHECK, the title was clean and had no troubles switching it to me.

If anyone is interested, there was no charge/penalty for the months the car was NOT registered!

I will receive a new title in about 1 month, I was told!

Now, if only gasoline prices stayed low...

My only other worry is that the previous owner didn't renew is Texas registration last year, so when I go to switch title, they might charge me a penalty or give me a hard time for an infraction of the previous owner?

I'd lean towards no. We bought a car with expired tags and it never made a difference for us when we went to transfer title. It wasn't in Texas, so YMMV.

I'd check the title over very, very carefully. I am not sure where you found this car, but if it was off of Craigslist, Christ, 6 out of 10 'sellers' had serious title issues when we were trying to buy through there.

  10. Can you track online? I cannot...

well it says that if u don't get the card in 30 days to contact the tele-bots. but unfortunately its still a waiting game.

i have a feeling the card is nowhere near printing. I guess might have to again walk into the USCIS office to find out more.

Same here... been waiting and still no card..

The welcome letter didn't mention that the card was being printed, just that "you will hear from us within 30 days of the date of this letter).

Did yours mention anywhere that your card is in the process of being printed?

Can you track online or by phone from the welcome letter's receipt no?

What does it say in the top right as "case type" in yours?

I think Claudeth's came within a day of one another

thanks everyone, we are still waiting it's been not more than a week so patience is turning out to be a virtue.

    congrats to everyone

  11. Yes, both the seller and me are in Texas.

I called after posting, and they told me there is no penalty UNLESS a cop pulls me over on the way to the county tax office!! In that case, I will show him the title and explain to him the situation...

Yes, the seller has been driving MANY months without registration! He cannot come to the office with me, so I will go by myself. Do they actually need to see the car at the office?

Make the owner meet you at the tax office to do the deal or call and ask that question. Tell him if there's a penalty, you expect him to pay it. If he wants to sell the car, he should agree to that. Has he been driving it without a license? Is the car in Texas now?

  13. I could print off the online policy.. They said they will mail the original papers in 1 week, but the paper off the internet is fine, because it comes with a 1-800 no. to verify the policy in case they stopped me...

My only other worry is that the previous owner didn't renew is Texas registration last year, so when I go to switch title, they might charge me a penalty or give me a hard time for an infraction of the previous owner?

  14. That's a good price!!

I will check with State Farm too.

Normally, if I buy insurance TODAY, do I have to wait until I receive anything in the mail to drive the car? or do they give you something to print out to prove you have insurance while waiting for the actual documents?

I've found that State Farm are the best all round with price.

Got my Cadillac STS (1999) insured with them for a little over $240.00 for six months with full cover, none of the other insurance quotes come close to the price I have with the same amount of cover, they all want over $380.00 .

I've only held my US driving licence for just over a year now.

  15. Ok I am getting close to getting the car!!

I will call DMV tomorrow to ask if my temp. driving license can be used to buy the car (I heard the number is the SAME as the final one -is that true?).

I also checked insurance. It is CRAZY   what they charge foreigners!!!!

The cheapest I could find was www.progressivedirect.com

I see that in this country are normally 6 months. What happens if you decide to change company before then? are they obliged to give you back any money? Does the rate improve only if you have been insured continously with the SAME company?

  16. Did you get a good deal with that website even if you are a foreigner's driver?

Would it help to add my spouse (US citizen with 15y DL, but never been insured in US...) to the contract? Would it be detrimental?

I'm quite worried about what crazy price they will quote!!

Any advice on any insurance company that doesn't rip you off (yeah right!!) especially if you are a "new" driver in this country???

but how can I get it if I haven't bought the car yet?

Can you insure the car even if you haven't yet registered it as your own?

You need to arrange for the insurance prior to final sale and receipt of the car. You know the make, model and year of the vehicle. Shop around and select the insurance company. You just tell them that you will be buying it. When you do take receipt call them immediately and they will want the VIN number off the vehicle and then they will work up the final price and send you a copy of the insurance statement, insurance cards to carry with you to show to the police (if you have to) that you do have insurance, and they will send you the first payment bill.

Doing it this way allows you to have insurance as soon as you start driving it from the sellers place.

Hell, I've called and gotten insurance from the seller's driveway with insurance.com. That way you can still compare rates even at the very last second. I just took the 1-800 number with me.

  17. Ouch!! Too late! I already paid for Autocheck!!!!

You might want to have a look at this website. It's a government website that will let you check the VIN on the car same as car fax without costing $30!.. I think I paid $2 or $3 to check out my car.. with one previous owner. It'll help if you've a few cars in mind you want to check... if your hunting around a lot of used car places or from private parties then car fax might be a better deal.

Good luck, it's an insane.. stressful mad thing buying a car!
