  1. Still no April...

No word on the original card, but Kathryn sent a nice additional card to replace it (the way I read her note, she wasn't the original sender for my card). Thanks so much! :D

  2. I sent mine out today. I hope that it arrives.

I haven't yet received my April postcard, either...

My May card should go out by the end of this weekend... as soon as I finish writing it. :)

Still no April, but May's came! Sanks, Emma! :D:dance:

My May card is being dropped at the post office tonight after work.

  3. yeah that seems a bit much ... which burger did you get?

    **********************

a few days ago I told the hubster he had to make me dinner on my Birthday but seeing as how I was in the hospital most of the day and the fact that we just got home a little while ago, I let him off the hook and he is picking up Chinese food...

Bacon Cheeseburger (still no health food, but better than a fried egg burger :P).

  4. True that they do, but from the little bluebonnet said, it doesn't sound like they live together and she never said anything about her friend living in Mexico - pretty hard to claim common law if you aren't/never have been living together.

Plus I doubt the friend would have had the foresight to file taxes as married etc.

Anyway, that's the way I read it.

Excellent points -- I'm not sure my friends filed taxes as married (not sure how common law works in NJ where they used to go to school, but I know NY does not let you become common law married there), but they've been living together for years.

  5. They did a full redesign of the green card, it's actually green now. Haha.

Yeah, just spotted it in the OT thread. I've been away from VJ for over a week for a California vacation, just now getting caught up. :D

  6. The guy told me 2-3 weeks for mine to arrive. Looks like I might be getting the new actually green greencard

Whoa-whoa-whoa.... actually green? what's this all about? did I miss something?

  7. Probably the best one out there, the only one anyone here ever links to.

Bluebonnet, Canadian immigration is not that hard and the Canada immigration website is just full of clear, concise info.

Oh and one thing - there is no 'fiance' visa for Canada - if she wants him to immigrate they will have to get married.

While it's technically true that there's no fiance visa, Canada appears to honor common-law marriages, as I believe that's how my friend Ilana brought her boyfriend Dan to Canada; he's already done POE and they're moving from NYC to Toronto June 1. They are neither married nor engaged.

  8. One trick you may be able to use if you anticipate this happening on a regular basis: my wife has a TD bank account in Canada that is maintained in US Dollars. Checks she writes to me are Canadian (and has what, to me, and probably to the banks in the US, looks like a wacky order of numbers at the bottom), but since they are made out in US Dollars, I've been able to deposit or cash them with no problem (though I have to use a teller -- Bank of America switched from envelopes to scanners for depositing checks at ATMs, and the scanner barfs at that code at the bottom :P).

  9. I never got a postcard from the first postcard exchange --- it was kind of a drag. so, I'm not in for anymore. I figure if you sign up for something you should do it, ya know? I, as well as most of the others, sent out a postcard by the date.

Anyway, have fun with it -- I generally really love stuff like this -- the xmas gift exchange was absolutely smashing!

    :D

I haven't yet received my April postcard, either...

My May card should go out by the end of this weekend... as soon as I finish writing it. :)

  10. I think we area going to Red Robins.. I got a coupon for a free burger for my Birthday...

    Sweet!

Yvonne and I did Red Robin last night... knowing I'd be having a blood sample drawn for wellness screenings at work today, and having had a past history of higher-than-I'd-like-but-not-quite-bad-enough-to-medicate cholesterol levels, I opted against the Royal Red Robin burger (burger with a fried egg on it). :P:lol:

  11. When Yvonne crossed over for the second (permanent) time this past weekend, they looked at her list of stuff, but didn't check any of the boxes in the car. Once we got away from the entry point (well well well away with the windows safely rolled up), she joked to me "Well, I guess I'm glad I didn't put the firearms and explosives on the list!"

(No, there were no firearms or explosives in the car.) :-P

  12. Yvonne will not be working full-time, and thus will not have insurance coverage from her employer. "Moved to a new country" does not count as a qualifying event to add a beneficiary to my insurance before the next open enrollment in November, but they will accept "no longer covered by other insurance." "Got married" doesn't work for us either, because we've been married for over a year and a half now, and I didn't add her at the time because she was already covered by insurance in Ontario before she moved.

  13. Pauley- Would they maybe accept a printout from the government of Ontario site stating that when one gives up their residency the coverage stops? Or is that not official enough? I think I remember a thread a while back where someone called OHIP and asked for prof that their coverage has stopped and they were told that it couldn't be provided. I looked but I can't seem to find it. They sure don't like to make it easy on us!

Perhaps. I'll ask the HR department when I go back to work on Tuesday.

    Thanks everyone for your responses!

  14. The Setup: Yvonne is moving to the US effective today (Saturday). My company's HR department says that, despite open enrollment being about 6 months away, if we can provide documentation that her OHIP coverage is ending, I can add her to my medical insurance now under the rules covering "significant change in other coverage."

OHIP's web site says she can cancel her coverage on account of leaving Ontario/Canada by filling out for 0280-82, "Change of Information," specifically, section F.

The questions: 1) Does OHIP send back any notification that they've received this form and that you're no longer covered, and 2) how exactly does she agree to section G that she's still living in Ontario when we're specifically filling out the form to say she's not? :P

  15. HHmmm wondering when more June interviews will be scheduled...maybe July?

This could be read as asking "will interviews for June be scheduled in July"... which I totally wouldn't put past Montreal.

  16. Are you crossing at the Peace Bridge or Queenston/Lewiston? We are heading up this weekend...if we see you heading in the other direction I'll wave :)

I usually cross L/Q unless there's ridonkulous traffic. As I have to drive east from Buffalo, the Peace Bridge is out of the way, and there's discount gasoline at Smoking Joes about 5 miles down NY-31 just this side of the L/Q that I usually stop at.

Good car! I own a 2007, and it made it across the continent with no problems whatsoever.

Yvonne bought a 2009 LTZ -- lots of tricks and features in it; she did a good job picking it out. :)

  17. How exciting! Good luck with the move. :)

Thanks! There isn't much that needs to be moved; she lives with her dad and we've already furnished my apartment with furniture and stuff, plus she brought down a bunch of CDs, computer stuff and random knick-knacks when she POE'd; a lot of this load is just going to be clothes, toiletries and other personal items. We're filling up her Malibu (purchased here in the US last month; nothing to deal with paperwork-wise there) and carting it home that way.

  18. She doesn't need anything else - how exciting for you two!

No doubt you have seen all the threads about doing and inventory list, or not, of items she is taking with her to the U.S., so I won't even mention that - although I just did!

Yup, got all that. Thanks! :)

  19. After initially completing POE back in April, Yvonne's actually moving permanently to the US this weekend (YAYE!). I know that, as an LPR, she can move stuff from her Canadian home to the US for up to ten years from initial POE, but does she need any other forms to allow her to do this, or is her green card enough evidence of her permission to move things?

  20. No clue what I'll be making. I might have lemon pepper squid with brocolli. I am taking a break from using Habanero peppers as I use them in my cooking every meal for the past 2 months and think I need a bit of a change. Plus don't know if Sudden Death Sauce, Habanero Peppers and salt-free lemon pepper seasoning would go together...

*BLEEPBLEEP* Warning: Chemical and radiation danger. Lethal exposure in 30 seconds.

  21. Far as I know, they don't. If it had shown a problem, it would've resulted in other tests. If it didn't, it's pretty much useless.

The instruction sheet they hand you when you arrive for the IR-1/CR-1 interview says that, once you've completed the medical, US immigration has no further need for the x-ray, but to instead hang on to it to give to your primary care physician for your permanent medical file once you've immigrated. Would have been nice of them to tell us that before we lugged it all the way there. :P
