  1. I've never been to the US side of the Falls...should be fun.

The view's really better from the Canadian side. Harder to see the American falls from the American side, and the Horseshoe Falls are obscured by mist anymore anyways, after all the commercial buildings messed up the airflow over the falls.

(Yes, I'm aware I haven't RSVP'd yet. Gotta make sure Yvonne's still available and hasn't scheduled something without telling me. :))

  2. Okay found my own answer again...didn't catch the link you posted Pauley.

So it looks like $3.50 and I pay coming back into Canada.

Next question ....what's parking like near the park?

NFBC shows a current toll price of $3.25, either US or Canadian. The $3.25 US toll tends to stay pretty steady; they often adjust the Canadian price with the exchange. Last time I crossed it was $3.75 Canadian; at one point the posted Canadian toll was actually cheaper than the US toll due to the exchange.

Unfortunately, I don't know about parking; only time I went to the American Falls State Park, I walked from the Canadian side where I'd parked for the day early on.

  3. I wonder how many of the ones actually causing the problems were Canadian? Maybe they all were, but it would be interesting to know how much of the crowd was not from Canada.

I saw a series of photos of rioters, and quite a few American flags among them. *headdesk* Figures.

  4. July 18 would probably work for Yvo and I, too, as we have to be in Toronto the day before for a birthday party, and can try to catch the meetup on our way back through to Rochester.

Actually, she says now that not doing both the same weekend would be better. So the 11th or the 25th would be best.

  5. what if you have a GC and a non Canadian passport?

Your GC is all that you should need to get back into the United States, but depending on the arrangement between your country and Canada regarding visas, you may or may not need to provide additional documentation to visit Canada.

Your profile lists your country as Brazil. The Canadian government's web site indicates that a Brazilian citizen wishing to visit for less than six months would need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa to visit Canada.

Whoops.... glad I kept reading before I posted. Permanent residents of the United States in possession of their green cards do not require visas to visit Canada.

  6. My wife POE'd at Lewiston-Queenston; we happened to get in around 8PM on Saturday night of Easter weekend, so it wasn't very crowded, and we were in and out in about a half hour -- the officer behind the desk said he could do the rest of the paperwork without us.

  7. This typo really gave me my laugh for the day.

My husband has been thinking about a new BBQ (I guess they call them grills here :) ) for Father's Day. So today I get this text from his 21 year old son:

Hey...any idea on what I should get my dad for fathers day? I was thinking maybe like a new girl or something like that, I thought I heard him say his was acting up.

Ironically, while we have no kids, I still ended up getting a grill on Father's Day.

(Before anyone asks, no -- while Yvonne and I had some fun with the coincidence on Facebook and Twitter yesterday, this is not a sly way of her "telling me something.")

  8. Yes, but I have my green card as well as Cdn. passport which I showed them and they still wanted to authenticate me. Who knows maybe they will need to brand LPR's one day.

Hopefully it doesn't come to that. :P CBP will likely authenticate anyone they need to authenticate; I was only countering the comment that a border crossing "won't take" NEXUS cards; all land crossings on both sides should accept them as ID.

  9. No, unfortunately they dont take it at the border that I cross and they probably never will.

There may not be a NEXUS lane for rapid processing, but both CBP and CBSA accept NEXUS cards as proof of identity and proof of citizenship for any land crossing. You'll go through your normal question/answer process like any other crossing, but the card will be accepted as ID.

  10. +1 for Google Voice. If you have the app for it on your Blackberry you can even initiate the call with your cell phone and it's still free (except for the minutes as you said). I've been using it to talk with my fiancee for a year now and haven't had to pay a dime the whole time. Sweet!!!

Yah... similar for iPhone; there's no actual native app, but the web app is pretty good, and it's really simple to make a home screen icon for it.

  11. I caught myself last night thinking about how I'd have to wait a whole other week to get my new iPhone 4 because of how late in the day I'd ordered.

    :bonk: :bonk: :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

Talk about first-world problems, eh? Kinda puts things in perspective when you re-read threads like this one. I'll be a good, well-behaved and thankful little boy now. :P Glad to hear some of these held-up visas are starting to move again!

  12. I am not going to list the many things that have made me want to scream out in frustration this year.

I am not going to list the many things that have made me want to cry.

My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer today.

    My heart aches.

    *bighuggggggggs* :(

I am in somewhat the same boat, my friends really thought I was making a mistake moving here, and although they tried to be somewhat supportive, I knew that it was never genuine. It was hard for them because not too many of them really had a chance to meet Si and get to know him.

Many of Yvonne's friends know me (that's how we met -- I knew them first), but she still seemed to be in a similar boat in the last few months before she moved - they would always ask us why she was moving here to NY instead of me moving to Toronto. Even now that she's moved, she thinks they're probably expecting that she'll keep coming to visit every 2-4 weeks like I used to when we were separated for immigration, which isn't going to happen.* It may only be a 3.5-hour drive, but still... no. Home is here now.

*Yvo's saying this as much as I am -- typed out, it almost looks like an edict on my part, which isn't the case. :P

She's a coward. And a mean coward at that. Respond to one of her comments with "Thanks for all your support, X-MIL." That should shock her. The sad part is that you won't get to see her have a panic attack. LOL

GENIUS. Even better, call her by first name -- as if to passive-aggressively call her out, "I know exactly who you are."

  13. Yvonne and I use Google Voice (Wikipedia link) to do free long-distance calling (originating in the US only) anywhere in the US and Canada. If you initiate the call from a web browser, then Google calls your phone, then the other party's phone. If you're on a landline where there's no charge for incoming calls, the call is completely free. On cell phones, your normal minute usage would apply.

  14. OK, I give up. :P

I got this neat card with Rodeo Drive on it, though the sender realized at the last minute that the lights on the trees were actually Christmas lights! :D Blame the post office for the sticker; looks like it says "Beverly Hills" on it...

It's postmarked Los Angeles, but I can't match the signature to anyone on the list...

Whomever wants to take credit for it, thanks for the card! :) Mine for June has yet to be written, but it will go out this week.
