  1. Wondering if anyone has any advice regarding taxes ...

I worked until January 25 in Canada (approx 3k gross) then moved to USA.

I have a pension plan that I'd like to take the cash payout on, which is about 8500$ pre-tax withholdings (about 6800$ after the 20% taxes come off)

Will I be filing taxes in Canada for January 1-23rd? I assume yes, in which I will claim the 3,000$ from work and the 8500$? Or just the 6800$?

In addition to that, when the time comes to file my US taxes next year, am I reclaiming that 11,500$ as income, or is it separate?

Do I claim my US income for the rest of this year in Canada too?

I'm just so lost and don't even know where to begin to find someone who knows the answers...

that’s awesome! we will be crossing on wednesday! ☺️

did you cross by land or plane? if by land, how did that  process go exactly? i’m just so nervous i’m missing something important which i know is silly being that my husband has his visa lol

Land crossing! Through Maine (it begins with a P...I can't remember right now...lol) .. I came from NS and through NB and then crossed.

It went well overall, there was a small hiccup but it was nothing I could control. Somehow there was 2 copies of my application in their system exactly the same, so he spent about an hour calling around for me to figure out what the deal was. I was stressing cause I didn't know what was happening til afterwards.

They needed my marriage certificate which I had, but had to dig to find it in the car, as well as my passport. I was not importing my car so I had a letter from GM saying I could have it there with me.

I saw people say to put a pack list of your stuff, but I didn't. I didn't have a ton. Clothes vacuumed sealed on top in a cargo carrier, and then the back of my SUV with 'stuff' in Ikea zipper bags (loved this for organizing and packing, way better than boxes!!!)

I also had my cat with me and had paperwork for him of his shots and health but the agent didn't want to see it.

They were able to update my address for me as my husband has moved since and it was good cause I got my SSN.

  3. Just wanted to pop back on here and say hello again!

I am officially in USA as of Jan 27th.

Crossing went super well, and I'm adjusting well here.

My SSN came pretty quick as well!

I still have all intents to make a longer post about my interview and so on, but just have been so slammed with life the past few months !

  4. I'm wondering how I tell what my first name is now..

My name was Katie-Name (hyphenated) Middlename Lastname, legally my first name was Katie-Name in Canada.

On my Visa in my passport it says ..

    Given Name

    Katie Name Middlename

at the bottom it says VIUSALASTNAME>>KATIE>NAME>MIDDLENAME<<<<<

So is my legal first name just Katie, or is it Katie Name Middlename?

I cross Saturday and I'll probably ask but sounds like a dumb question and I don't want to raise suspicions ?

$220 is your green card application fee. You should pay before you cross the border or your green card application will be delay.

Your alien number is the same as the Registration Number on the Immigrant Visa the consulate returned with your passport.

Nobody can pay this fee at NVC stage because you don't have the A number yet. The A number or registration number will be issued if you are approved at your interview only.

Thank you! I got it paid!

it shows my name though as

Firstname Secondfirstname Middlename NMN Last  name...

I know NMN means no middle name, but I do have one and it's there listed. I just hope they don't think I have 3 first names..

Another question on crossing, any issues doing it with a family member (Canadian citizen) or is it advised to go on your own?

Also if going with your own vehicle will the border request you to also do the vehicle import or is it optional/can do it another time?

    I'm following for this answer!

I'm bringing a Canadian friend with me, and not importing my car (only keeping the car there for a few months) 👀

  7. Hello Everyone!

I will be crossing in about 2 weeks from now, I was just looking up some info and read about a 220$ 'USCIS immigrant fee' ... Is this something I'm supposed to pay ahead of time? It mentioned needing an alien number which I don't think I have yet, do I? Did I already pay this before during my NVC stage or during the initial filing?

Hello all, I have my interview coming up soon. Here are the documents I plan to take. Please let me know if anything else is needed:

    • Interview letter
    • Passport + copy
    • 2 passport photos
    • DS-260 confirmation
    • Birth certificate + copy
    • Marriage certificate + copy
    • Certified divorce decree + copy
    • Police certificates + copy
    • Petitioner passport copy
    • Petitioner birth certificate + copy
    • Birth certificate of our son + copy
    • Resume

For domicile, at NVC stage we had submitted I-864 showing assets only since my wife was with me in Canada. She has since moved to the US 3 months ago and has secured a job making $57,000. So we are planning on her being the sponsor and showing her income on I-864 instead of assets. Is that enough? We don't have tax returns for last 3 years since she had no income.

    Documents we have for domicile:

    • Job offer letter
    • Paystubs for the last 2 months
    • Rental agreement with her parents
    • Bank statement
    • IRA statement
    • Kindergarten application for our son at private schools
    • Voting record

    Thanks!

Not sure on the things with your wife switching to your sponsor...

but my interview was 3 weeks ago. I had soon much ready and they only asked for my marriage certificate, my police check, my birth certificate, my passport and my photo!

It's better to be over prepared than under prepared for sure!!

If you can manage UHaul to rent and move yourself, it's quite economical.  We have a truck and rented a trailer for a week and it was around $750 CAD all in, YYC to IAH.

I have an SUV that I'm taking for a bit but I can't tow with it unfortunately. I am going to try a roof rack, and also see if anyone local to me would bring a suitcase along with them if they're headed that way between now and then!

Hi, I was there on the 9th too. Mine was 745am. What time was your appt? Good outcome?

730am! I was lined up outside around 715 and done looking for my friend by 815! We probably seen each other. I had a black coat, long blondish hair, long sleeved flower dress.

Great experience and outcome! Approved on the spot. Got the email today my passport is here to pickup but I'll be going Friday due to work schedule.

I'm hoping to take some time this week and write about my medical in Toronto, and my experience in Montreal with hotels etc.

I got quotes for the same thing from BC to Seattle. The best I was able to get was about $4,000 for 70 boxes and 3 room of furniture in a fairly large shipping truck company. Prices are all over the board. I just did a google search for international moving companies and did a ton of calling and emailing around. It's helpful if you are very specific about the number of boxes you estimate, as well as the furniture and appliances. Everything costs money, so being specific help with an accurate estimate. I got estimates from 4 to 20,000, so do your homework.

It sucks cause I don't have all that much stuff overall to take. I'm not taking any furniture or anything big. It's just clothes, decor, special stuff etc. I can't justify all that $$ on so few things but can't figure out other options.

I don't think airlines would let me check tote bins would they?

I would also bring copies of all supporting docs you submitted to NVC

Make sure to provide an updated i864 and i864 if your status or financials have changed

I’m bringing everything you listed and extras to prove domicile and income/assets:

SSN, Home ownerships, bank statements, voter registration etc. Most likely won’t ask for them but better to come prepared.

In addition I heard they may ask for your resume.

The i864 information has not changed that I am aware of!

We don't have any assets together like housing and banks. I have everything we uploaded to NVC printed, and then the updated 2021 versions of everything .. Do Americans get a SSN card? We don't here anymore in Canada..

I'll add my resume in to my own section. Thanks so much!

  13. Hello everyone!

My interview is on Wednesday and just finishing up the paperwork to bring with me

I also have in the binder

    Copy of interview email

I noticed in my husband's 2020 wage and income transcript it shows a title of 'Form 1099B' and all other Wage & Income Transcripts I have say W2 on them. Should I have him double check his IRS account?

  14. I'm sure there's sooooo many guides around online and even on here... but does anyone have a reliable link to what I need to bring to my interview?

Do I need my joint sponsors original birth certificates? Do I need my joint sponsors/original sponsors original tax forms?

Slowly going into panic mode in anticipation of this interview 🥴

Also, Happy Canadian Thanksgiving friends ❤️ Very thankful to have all of you and your expertise and support going through this together.

Lily lol? Yes I booked it with her too :)

    Yup!

She called me after a few emails and made me an appointment that would work with flying in from NS same day.

I'll be in at 115, then a 30ish min taxi to the appointment. My apt is for 3pm but she said if I'm early we can start early. That it takes about 2h.

Trying to decide if I should book the 6pm flight home, or the 6am ... Not paying for a hotel so I'd be bumming around then at the airport to wait...

Thanks! I am confused b/w Dr. Mascarenhas and Zatzman. Read reviews for both and they are both about the same distance from where I live. Anybody got any suggestions?

I have no actual advice, but I booked in with Dr M because the secretary seemed very kind!
