sandinista! reacted to Ihavequestions in Dealing with a previous marriage in a high fraud country.
Muslim Egyptian men can have four wives at the same time. Dunno who told you three, but they're wrong.
You signed an urfi/orfi marriage paper, commonly known as a "sex paper." COs know what these are and this will be a red flag. Not because they're unusual (it's the easy way to skirt the law), but because a guy from a conservative, rural village in Upper Egypt would enter into one of these arrangements with his future Mrs. Forever instead of a proper marriage.
Other than the religious differences and the urfi/orfi marriage paper, what other red flags do you have to address?

sandinista! reacted to Harpa Timsah in Wal-Mart’s newest big lie: Another misleading ad campaign from a job-killing behemoth
ExExpat, those of us who are defending the workers of Walmart don't work there ourselves.
You have now told me and Penny that we should work harder to get out of our Walmart jobs. That is seriously f*cked up.
Neither of us work there. See, some people can have empathy for others, we can care about the wrong in the world when it doesn't effect us directly.
What a serious clusterf*ck.

There will ALWAYS be the jobs that people do not want to work. Always. And people will always need to fill those positions. I do not think they should have to sacrifice their quality of life to do so.
If you have a full time job, if you put in your 40+ hours a week, you should not need to crawl to the government so that you can eat.
In an ideal world, everyone works their dream job. But in the real world, people will work where they will get hired because jobs aren't just around the corner for everyone like some people seem to believe. You cannot just go next door and find a good pay with good benefits.
I swear, it's like some people are living in a different country.
Check out the people who are working in retail and fast food these days. Plenty of them have an education but no jobs in their field.

Exactly. That's the issue. Those places are out there for everyone to see. And with the largest retailer pushing wages, the rest of the industry often has little chance but to follow suit. All of a sudden, the vast majority of the millions of retail jobs pay minimum wage regardless of experience, age, engagement, whatnot. Did a member of this forum not report that very experience just the other day?

According to me it's what? A dream job?
Where'd I say that?
Seriously, get off your high horse and realize that just because someone works retail doesn't mean they're uneducated or need improving.
Walmart needs employees. Like Harpah said, the world needs janitors. The world needs fast food workers. Not glamorous jobs by any means, but they are necessary in our world. The people who do those jobs should be paid enough that they do not have to depend on the government to eat.
You really need to stop acting superior and looking down at people who are working jobs that you wouldn't.

Yeah, I would prefer compassionate conservatives to this.
I think maybe it's people who aren't secure with their lot in life, so they have to bash people who are less fortunate to make themselves feel better.

I assure you I have quite a fine education and neither me or my children will ever work for Walmart.
But not everyone should be as educated as me. It takes all sorts to make this world go around. There are plenty of good jobs that don't require a college education and we need people to work those jobs. The people that work those jobs should get paid a living wage and be able to have a fair life. The world needs janitors.

You think people who are working at Walmart sought it out like a dream job?
Look, these stores aren't going away. Walmart will always need employees. Shouldn't the employees who work there 40+ hours a week be able to survive on what they make?
I am so tired of the attitude that people who are working in retail are uneducated, lazy people with no real motivation in life.

sandinista! reacted to Harpa Timsah in Wal-Mart’s newest big lie: Another misleading ad campaign from a job-killing behemoth
You know, most minimum wage workers are women working to support their families because their husband's income isn't enough.
And all these republicans love to talk about family values and how absent parents result in crime.
Why wouldn't these same people want to make it so only one parent has to work while the other can stay home and care for their family? I support it if both parents want to work, but I don't think that both adults in the household should be forced to work to survive. If one works a full time job, that should be enough for their family.
The CEOs can afford it. Profits are higher than ever.

sandinista! reacted to Penny Lane in Wal-Mart’s newest big lie: Another misleading ad campaign from a job-killing behemoth
No. But shouldn't someone who is employed be able to support their family themselves?
Isn't that the point of employment?
What's the point if you just have to crawl to the government for help anyway?
America, the land of opportunity!!
-
sandinista! reacted to Harpa Timsah in Wal-Mart’s newest big lie: Another misleading ad campaign from a job-killing behemoth
Any full time position should be enough to support a small family without government intervention. It used to be that if you were willing to work you could survive. That is not true anymore.
I am surprised that the neocons don't mourn the loss of the American worker. That's good American values: you work, you support your family. Corporate CEOs are doing everything they can to change that, to make the government subsidize their profits, and the new talking points about the free market are enough to erase a common sense value?

sandinista! reacted to Mr. Big Dog in Fast-food protests to spotlight 'wage theft'
There are easy remedies to keep employees from clocking in early or riding the clock at the end of the shift in violation of policy. It's called disciplinary action. It works, too. Yes, that is real life experience. I've managed this problem quite successfully in my first job here in this country. Did not break a sweat managing it and did not break any wage and hour laws and did not steal from hourly employees. Ever.
Your post demonstrates that you have no idea how this actually works. Or you do and you are part of the wage theft problem and think that it's okay. You line of argument is certainly not a valid excuse for the wage theft that occurs all too often in America. Wage theft is wrong. And it is illegal. Plain and simple.

My sugar muffin honey bunny Moroccan husband remains decidedly lovable. Our 7th anniversary is coming up, and we plan on making it as saccharine an affair as possible. Or maybe just go to the beach.

sandinista! reacted to elmcitymaven in Illegal Immigrant Planning to Sue American First Responders Who Saved His Life
Undocumented persons are not prevented from pursuing legal actions, even though they are not entitled to the exact same rights of LPRs or citizens. However, citizenship is not germane in this matter. If he were a citizen, he'd just be an idiot. If he were a LPR, he'd just be an idiot. As a tourist on a valid visa, he'd just be an idiot. As an H1B, J1, F1, he'd just be an idiot. The question is not "does a person's immigration status make his claims sufficient to be pursued at trial?" but rather "do the facts as presented make his claims sufficient to be pursued at trial?"
And again, I find it highly doubtful that anyone not of Hispanic origin (or seeming to be so) would have had their status even questioned.

Sure, cry me a river. Not at this time? Then when? Retailers that pay higher wages still make it out there. Costco is doing just fine paying their staff some 65% more than WalMart. How do they do that and don't go under? According to your argument, that can't happen. And yet, it does. In real life. Trust me, I've been to their stores.

Man you love detracting from the topic. Walmart doesn't have unions. So I get it now, you complain people are on welfare yet you advocate for depressed wages to keep said people on welfare.
I think it is reasonable to raise the minimum wage, to a living wage and therefore the working and ever shrinking middle class will have more money in their pocket. No one is talking about raising Walmart workers to 60k a year.

sandinista! reacted to Golden Gate in Wal-Mart’s newest big lie: Another misleading ad campaign from a job-killing behemoth
There needs to be a paradigm shift, because having the consumer economy run on poorly made objects that we are forced to buy from China really sucks. I remember when the U.S.A. made things and they were much better quality. So they cost a little more. Wages have been stagnate for a very long time. I could care less if Walmart hired more people. I wish they went out of business. Then the small businesses could come back. As far as I see it, Walmart hasn't made a lot of jobs. There were jobs before, they were just smaller businesses and more of them. And people could afford to buy American products because the cost of living was lower and their wages higher in comparison.

Hogwash. Retail is not run by teenagers. Not even close. Fact is there aren't enough working teenagers to fill all the retail positions out there.

Exactly! The idea that retail workers are somehow not worth a living wage is repulsive. Everyone holding that maxim deserves to fall on hard times and end up working in retail.
