The question is how long can the Seattle office hold the N-400?
So far, I haven't filed any sort of formal legal complaint because my N-400 is within "normal" processing timeframe (in my case 15.5 months have passed, so I have until the first week of May to wait).
I have no idea what the future holds.
I do know that some combo filers were done within the normal processing times for N-400.
It's possible your case will be done within the time frame. It's possible it might take a little longer than that. None of us know how long Seattle office is going to hold your applications until they schedule your interview. There is unfortunately nothing you can do at this point. You've done everything you could.
-
USCIS Representative told me that they are not going to be issuing a 10-year green card if you have already filed N400. They won't do one interview and the other one later. They will combine the two interviews on the same day. Therefore it freezes I-751 and delays the overall process of I-751. With regards to why the N-400 is seemingly delayed by concurrent fillings, it has to do with the Seattle office. Not only filing N400 delays I-751 completion, I-751 also puts combo files into a different category resulting delay of N400 as well.
So basically, Seattle office is the one at fault and delaying combo filers.

We filed our I751 on November 2018 and were thinking to file the N400 while the i751 is pending. But for some reasons, we procrastinated and never got time to do it.
Also after reading about Seattle experiences for combo interviews, we decided to just wait for the i751 to be approved first. We got approved on Jan 2020. We applied for the N400 after receiving the 10 years green card.
While the N400 is pending, at least we can travel with the 10 years green card since we are not dealing with extensions anymore.
I wish you knew about this Seattle backlog before applying for citizenship while your i751 is still pending. If you have a military spouse, things might go faster than others.
From your experience it does look like combo filing is delaying the whole process (both I-751 and N400 process). I filed my I-751 in 2017 Oct. I would probably have received my 10-year green card in 2019 had I not filed for N-400. And I would probably be done with N-400 by now judging by the N-400 only peoples timelines.
USCIS told me on telephone that I-751 and N-400 are completely separate processes and do not interfere with each other. But it's very obvious here that filing N400 before I-751 completion causes a significant delay of I-751 at least. Why do they do this? Why can't they schedule the I-751 interview first and give me the 10-year green card first? I paid the fees, and part of that includes the fees for making a new green card. Why?

9/11/2018. During the last infopass appointment for a new stamp, I was told I would likely be scheduled for May. Fingers crossed.
May? That's scary. Did they tell you why? That would put your application outside normal processing. How are others who applied in 2019 getting their interviews while we are still waiting?
-
How many of you filed N-400 before 2019?
I filed mine 10/3/2018
Just curious how many people from 2018 are still waiting.
-
I remember looking at combo filing in 2018 and before, and back then it was suggested that combo filers can actually speed up the whole process due to N400 being processed faster than I 751. The landscape is very different now.

So my official interview is now on Feb 24th at 10:10 am. Do you think they may schedule me for oath ceremony the same day? Will they take my Green Card the day of the interview or the day of the ceremony?
The delimma is I have planned a Mexico Cancun trip with my wife on Feb 24th. And I don't want to reschedule my interview. So what I will do is to send my wife to Mexico on the 24th, and I will catch a flight on the 25th. I am afraid if they took my GC, then I won't be able to access Mexico ? If I do the ceremony the same day of my Interview, they will give me the naturalization certificate, right ? Will the naturalization certificate serve the same purpose for travel as the green card when entering Mexcio or returning to the US?
What should I do if they gave me the option to attend ceremony the same day or at a later time ? And what time they usually conduct the ceremony in Seattle, Afternoon or evening or night time? And how long it lasts? So I catch a flight at night after the ceremony if that is the case.
Thanks and looking forward to hearing your informative inputs
They wont take away your green card after the interview until the oath. So the easiest option is to ask them not to schedule you for same-day oath. You won't be a US citizen until you finish the oath. And the thing is that same-day oath is never guaranteed, so don't plan for that. You can do the oath once you come back.

Sweet thanks. And how long it takes from the interview until ceremony Oath ? Can both be done the same day?
Depends on the time of your interview and the interview officer. If you are lucky you can get it done the same day. Otherwise you might need to wait a few weeks.

Hey Guys,
Just got my appointment scheduled today and I got the date for the appointment as well. It looks like seattle office is finally speeding up.
Filed online 1/30/2019
Bio 02/20/2019
Interview Scheduled 01/15/2020
Interview Date 02/19/2020
I got scheduled an 8:35 AM, so I guess I might get the same day oath?
Will update my interview experience once I am done.
Are you a combo filer?

Hey guys,
I am also from Washington, specifically on the Eastside. I am following this thread. I filed for N-400 while I-751 is still pending.
Here is my info:
I-751:
Package received by USCIS on 12/31/2018.
Received my 18 months extension letter on 01/24/2019.
Received biometrics appointment letter on 4/30/2019
Case status updated to fingerprint review completed on 05/01/2019.
I have not heard anything since.
N400:
Filed online on 12/20/2019
Received NOA1 on 12/21/2019
Biometrics appointment letter on 12/28/2019
Completed a early walk-in for biometrics appointment on 01/02/2020
Case status updated to "your case is being actively reviewed" on 01/02/2020
My online estimated case completion is 13 months--02/2021
My online estimated wait time is 13 months
Questions:
How accurate is the estimated case completion time?
Will my interview likely happen in Yakima, WA(I live on the eastside)?
Does Yakima offer same day interview?
Thanks guys!!
Not accurate. Timer ran out over a month ago. My estimated time of completion was Dec 2019 and then Jan 2020 and now Feb 2020. If you just filed last month for N400 I suggest you get off this forum and don't worry about it for the next at least 10 month. Don't hope it will get done before their eatimate for a combo filer. It's hopeless. Seriously don't waste your time on N400 yet it's way too early.

We are combo filers because they were inefficient. Otherwise, we would be solo filers.
That just made it even worse lol

Looks like non-combo filers really have it faster than combo filers. It's weird.

That's super useful! My I751 was filed exactly 26 months ago and has been in NBC for 1 year like yours. How do you know that they finished processsing it and they sent it already to Seattle? Did you call? did they change your status in your myUSCIS page?Thank you so much!
I called. Nothing changed on my homepage.

Nope, I'm from Europe. They already tried to schedule N400 interview back in September but they couldn't due to pending I751 which got transferred to NBC in late 2018 and that office is taking 37 months or so to process cases. It's ridiculous. Hopefully they'll get up to speed after I take these actions, if not I'll have to file Writ of Mandamus in a few months.
Mine was also transferred to NBC. I think that's where it really slowed us all down. My I-751 was filed 27+ months ago. It was transferred to NBC in Dec 2018. There, it took a full year until Dec 2019 when NBC processed it and sent it to Seattle office. Now I'm just waiting to the interview to be scheduled.
-
BTW Guys I just checked the processing times and found out that our local officer has overtaken the other major offices (NYC, LA, SF, DAL, HST) and became the one with the longest wait at 16-19.5 months for N400. Lucky us lol. I wonder what did Seattle office do to earn such a summa cum laude high honor. They must have tried really hard to get this badge.

Hi PY6,
I understand you frustration.
I had a planned trip to Vancouver Canada dated December 13, then my interview was scheduled on December 11. It was nerve wracking of thinking about the unknown but I chose just to wait and see what happens after the interview. Being upset or angry to USCIS won’t change a thing, they care less about how we feel, the more they don’t even know how we feel about delays. It is just waste of energy. Just relax. It is what it is. Anyway while I’m waiting for my interview that time, I read some options on what to expect or what to do after the interview. Anyway I passed my 9:45 am interview and had an Oath Taking the same day. The next day on the 12th I went to the Regional passport agency in Seattle to apply for my passport which also I planned ahead I made an appoint a week before my interview. Since I’m traveling on 13th, I brought my hotel reservation which was booked long time before I even I knew about my interview. The passport agency accept my application so as my hotel reservation copy and I got my passport the same day, I waited until 2:30pm.
It took a lot of researching, planning and anticipation of the “what if” scenarios. But I didn’t stress about it.
Anyway I just feel sorry for each individuals frustration.
Cheer up! Just enjoy the rest of the holiday.❤️
Thank you for your kind and warm words. I have already cancelled that trip and booked a different one going back to my home country in February. You are right. I shouldn't let it bother me. That's why I booked the whole trip because I'm not going to let this N400 thing disrupt my life. Who knows how long I have to wait.

I think the person lives outside the Seattle city area and is a N-400 only filer.
I was wondering in addition to py6, Washingtonian and me (GermanG), are there still other combo filers in the forum?
The 3 of us (I believe) filed I751 sometime during 2017 and N400, during 2018. We are the lucky ones wirhout Green Card or citizenship (for more than 2 years).
I'm planning to go to New Zealand next year mid April. This is really literally destroying my trip. I just don't think I will have enough time to get everything ready by the time the trip needs to happen. Very disappointing and very angry at USCIS

Hello, I wanted to provide an update. Minutes ago I received a notification that our Interview has been scheduled. I'm surprised to have received a notification on a Saturday. No letter under documents yet. I'll share once I see it.
File date: July 10th
BIO: July 30th
Case transferred: October 25th (no notification on where it was transferred but I assume to Portland)
Congrats! July 10th of 2018 or 2019?

I will do that. Next month I can inquire about N400 as well as 19.5 months since filling will pass by then. I'll keep you posted.
I would be talking to a lawyer at this point.

Combo filer. I filed N-400 at the end of October 2018 and the I-751, at the beginning of November 2017.
The estimated completion date is February 2020.
The estimated wait time: today should be day ZERO. And it says, the very famous and wanted message:
"We are taking longer than expected to process your case. You do not need to do anything at this time."
I've been on that for days now...
-
Status changed to "it's taking longer..." for N400 after countdown reached zero. Submitted an inquiry on I-751 on 11/13 and haven't heard back.
I751 filed 2017.10 N400 filed 2018.10

That's horrible 😔. You and Washingtonian both are from April 2018. Somehow you guys are severely delayed and other combo filers are already done. How is that okay? What is Seattle doing to specifically delaying your cases? They know yours is out of normal processing range. Every case they process within normal prosessing range, they know there are older cases out there waiting for adjudication. What are they doing? This doesn't seem innocent to me. This seems purposeful, intentional.
