Its not approved till you have the visa in hand. Many embassies keep the passport as they are anticipating their approval and they want to process the visa as quickly as they can. I believe you're fine.
Follow your case on ceac.state.gov use immigrant and case numbe till it gives you an error. Then switch to non-immigrant when it will be issued shortly after.

That is the standard answer they give to everyone approved for the K1 (in Algeria). My Algerian fiance received his passport back within a week (through Amamex). I believe you guys were approved. Congratulations!

So just heard back from my fiancé who just finished their interview for the k1 visa. When I asked if they told him if was approved or not he told me he didn't know, they kept his passport and they said that aramex will call him to come to capital to pick up his passport after 10 days. Is this all a good thing? Does this mean was most likely approved??

It is a good sign that the CO kept his passport.......but it does not equate approval.
