  1. I just got my interview notice. 11/15/07... Very unhappy about it. I just got my EAD last week and may have to wait another month for a social. So there's a few things I won't have for the interview, #1 is joint bank statements and maybe not a job since I'm still waiting on the social. Should I be worried?

I didn't get a lot of detail from him, but my lawyer did tell me that my wife DID NOT have to have a SSN before she started working. Just the EAD. The employer can still withhold taxes and stuff without the SSN.

  2. I'll read any proposals that are put forward - but again, strictly speaking, I know what system worked best for me.

Like I posted in another thread:

    1) Require healthcare companies to set a fixed price for each of their healthcare plans. Every one that chooses a particular plan pays the same price as everyone else.

    2) Require healthcare companies to accept ALL people who wish to purchase a healthcare plan. No cherry picking only the healthy people.

    3) Like liability insurance is required for driving, require all people to at least purchase basic health insurance.

  3. My father suggests that the government should pass laws that basically do this:

    1) Require healthcare companies to set a fixed price for each of their healthcare plans. Every one that chooses a particular plan pays the same price as everyone else.

    2) Require healthcare companies to accept ALL people who wish to purchase a healthcare plan. No cherry picking only the healthy people.

    3) Like liability insurance is required for driving, require all people to at least purchase basic health insurance.

I'm sure there would be more to it, but I think that the healthcare companies in conjunction with the medical sector could still figure out how to make a profit. I know of course that there will be dickheads that refuse to buy the insurance just like people refuse to carry car insurance. Those people would have to be dealt with accordingly. But for the most part at least everyone could probably afford coverage of some sort.

  4. Without some sort of government intervention the predicament the USA is in will only get worse. Since insurance companies are profit motivated they will continue to cherry pick only the healthiest of individuals to offer affordable coverage to. As medical costs continue to rise insurance companies will continue to raise premiums, forcing more and more companies to drop insurance coverage for their employees. The current system is a no-win situation and needs to be fixed. If you believe that somehow that the medical or insurance industries will somehow work this all out by themselves you are mistaken.

The latest number I saw said their were 47 MILLION uninsured people. My guess is that a large majority of these people work in low paying jobs that don't offer health insurance benefits. There is NO reason why these people should have to live in fear of getting sick or injured and going into the hospital just ONCE and winding up with enough debt to either bankrupt them or take literally years to pay off.

  5. Doesn't this article contradict itself? It says the price of corn has dropped so much that "two million family farmers can’t compete with subsidized U.S. corn" and then turns around and says "the price of a tortilla in Mexico has risen 279% since NAFTA". So corn is cheaper, yet the tortilla costs more, and somehow it's the fault of the USA.

    Just brilliant.

  6. Who is more worth your time? The citizen who hides several million in a tax shelter or the illegal immigrant who is slaving away at minimum wage? Lets add this too, it will cost you $10,000 to audit and prosecute the person to recover the money.

They are both worth our time. Crime is crime. You don't let people get away with committing crimes just because it's not it the governments best financial interest to solve or prevent them.

  7. Lets assume he did pay taxes. Which over 11 years makes his tax burden about $9000 (more or less since tax rates have changed a bit over time). So he leaves the country with $50,000 instead. There are many people who would still be upset by that.

Is there a point here? Trying to win an argument by changing facts into hypotheticals is a waste of time.

  8. Rebecca, I simply don't agree with sibling green cards because the vast majority of the time they are used for "chain immigration"

And what's wrong with that?

It's my personal opinion. I dont believe that my brother has any right to immigrate to this country just because I have a green card. If he wants to come here he can earn it on his own merits.

I fail to see why this opinion is "wacko", its simply that I believe that immigration is a hard earned privaledge, not a right. This is probably influenced by the fact that I lived here on work visas for 7 years before getting my green card through marriage.

  9. He isn't the first politician who ended up eating his own words. Never say never.

But still. he should at least not be stupid enough to say "it will work this time around" when it's so obvious it didn't work last time. How does the saying go? "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me?"
