  1. I should have known better than to say "bulb" as I have purchased bulbs in the past to grow flowers. Until today, I thought roses could only be grown from rose bulbs. I'm going to try this in the spring btw. Maybe try to get some V-Day flowers to grow. I've got a couple rose bushes but no long stems.

Yeah, roses are not a bulb, but a bush. I'm not exactly sure where you are, but the long stem HTs they sell in the store are generally only hardy to USDA zones 6b+. That's OK, though, as they may just need protection if you're colder or growing in a pot and carrying them in and out. Roses take a long time to root. I've done it routinely without rooting hormone and with. I haven't noticed too much difference in my success rate. My advice is that when you get your bouquet and recut the bottoms, you leave them in the vase and keep the water clean until the flower withers and dies. Then keep watching and keeping the water clean. The stem should dead head itself. The ones where the stem stays alive and is not shriveling? Those are your best chances. When it's spring, stick them deep into the soil and leave out at least one leaf bud-- but more like 2-3 if you have the length left. Usually it's a 2/3 underground ratio to above ground. And if they all fail, that's OK. :) It happens. The nice thing about own root is that any winter kill or damage-- the bush can sprout from the base and recover. Grafted have suckering issues and are weakened at the joint, and can kill off the top and leave that understock. Good luck!

  2. So I can take this:

Put the bottom of the stem in the ground, and I get this?

    Dublin%2BBay%2Bbush%2B04-18-10.jpg

Yes. Assuming the cutting takes. Roses will also sometimes root in water. So if you keep the water clean enough and have a cut rose you particularly like for some reason (and also the climate to grow it in or the willingness to cart it in and out of your garage in the winter or protect it from cold since you're showing me hybrid teas), sometimes they will root over a period of weeks in a vase.

  3. I've heard people say women should not vote or be educated beyond a certain level as well. The vote reasons I've heard is that spouses will vote the same, so no need to have two votes or that women are too emotional and frivolous and vote off emotion or for the more attractive candidate. As far as education, I've heard that women should spend time at home and that work removes them from this necessity; women are not capable of retaining an education as well as men, so it is wasted anyway; or women have become more trouble since they learned to read, and thus the world would be more peaceful if education was limited.

  4. A guy I work with once lived next door to a multifamily Indian household. The elder female planted a row of roses. Like, from a bouquet......... just dug a hole and put the stems in about half way up to the bulb. Like she thought they would just take off and grow. Weird?

Hi. I'm assuming by "bulb" you actually mean the ovary? Because roses do not have bulbs, which are modified and shortened stems which function as the storage for certain plants. Bulbs are usually underground (but can be partially above, or even sitting on the soil). An onion is a bulb. Also, I would like to point out that her attempt to root roses like that is perfectly fine. Roses stem-root. It takes some work, which is why you would plant several of them like that and hope you get a few cuttings to take off. It's not weird. It's how roses are propagated own-root and have been since cultivation of roses began. I'm not sure where you thought roses came from, but with plants, choices are always limited-- seed or vegetative propagation of some kind. Since most roses grown are not speciaes, seed would never produce a copy. You are left with vegetative propagation. If you were thinking that grafting is the only way it is and has been done, then grafting of roses FYI is only done for certain situations (and is usually unnecessary unless you're in FL with the nematode issue) and still wouldn't answer where all those (predominantly) "Dr. Huey" root stocks came from.

Below is a link in case you wanted to read about rose propagation.

  5. Ooh! Ooh! I love statistics that are pulled right from the rectum! How much and what type of in depth statistical analysis have you done to get that number? What calculations were made? From where did you retrieve this data and which pieces of data were relevant? How do you quantify a "bad marriage"? I do statistical analysis for a living, dear. Maybe people find it boring but I love numbers. I love analysis. It's a hobby of mine to make light of dubious "statistics".

I do agree that women should be smart, and not enough are. There are definitely a lot of scammers out there. But I see no difference between a foreigner younger man who marries a woman for a green card and a domestic younger man who marries a woman for her money. I see plenty of that going on as well.

None of this has to do with the main reason men from MENA countries go through AP. You know that, you are just really bitter and looking for an outlet. It's understandable but it's not healthy. You should take up meditation.

I know I've said this before, and it wouldn't at all be indicative of anything other than a slice of VJ MENA time, but one could do stats using FQ's old visa in hand/interview threads. She used to keep track of all the active posters and then made a big post of all of them. So you could grab from the active pool some stats from those years, but that would only be that sample and not necessarily representative of all of MENA, current MENA, or anything outside that range. But it would be a starting point.

  6. So what if I have reservations about marrying a foreigner. It doesn't mean we don't love and care for each other, but it also means that I'm not totally stupid and very much aware of fraud and ulterior motives. Ever heard of a prenup? That thing people to get protect themselves if their marriage fails?

Well, this is a fun thread! I thought I'd just toss in that as you're reading the I-864 and thinking over the responsibility of bringing someone over, you may need to consider that it trumps your "prenup" idea.

  7. I always fry up a few slices of bacon and pour the rendered fat into the mix. It makes it taste good and gives it something special.

Your attempt to make people who either follow the Bible or the Quran mad is pretty lame. Actually, it's like laughably lame. This isn't even "A game," but more like "X game." Wouldn't it make more sense to troll a religious forum if you wanted to make people mad? There are several really awesome facebook pages that you could probably go to where people may go nuts with your comments, as they are operating on the same, pretty low level.

Hi, I told my husband I would try to make him couscous, all the recipes I have found seem to call for an ingredient I can't find at my local supermarket here in the US. Does anyone have a fairly easy recipe for couscous that has ingredients that can be found easily here in the US. I want to preferably make it with beef. All recipes and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks:)

I second ordering it on Amazon. Make a list of maybe a few things you don't have access to and maybe you can even hit free shipping if they come from the right place :)

  8. The one plant I have that does very well is an avocado plant I grew from a pit. I am jealous of the green thumbs you ladies have. After the first of the year I am resigning from my job and I am definitely going to putt more time and effort into my indoor plants. Do you guys have any suggestions for types of flowering plants that would be good for a novice. My grandmother always had the most beautiful African violets. I'm going to buy a table to put in front of the windows that have sun, but under the windows are big radiators, my house is 102 years old and still has the original ones. I hope the heat doesn't prevent them from growing.

The heat can create a really dry environment and as FQ mentioned, it can also mess with temperature sensitive plants that need a rise and fall to bloom. In addition to her list, another good bloomer is streptocarpella. Some begonias may do OK as well.

  9. Now I want orchids too. Where did you order them from?

I ordered from two people-- directly from these people via calling:

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/peaandshel/m.html?item=271315706739&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f2bad2373&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

and then via eBay from this person:

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/haveno09/m.html?item=251376227128&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

The last one has cheaper shipping and costs and will include a heat pack for $2.50. She's been reallly nice. I can review both purchases for you if you want when they get here.

  10. Oh the anticipation......

Our weather is in yo-yo mode:

Last week: arctic cold front kept us between 30 and 45

This week: sunny and warm with highs of 80 and lows of 65

Coming tomorrow: a 50 degree plunge and another week of frigid temps

Redneck greenhouse about to be put to the acid test

Same here! So it was 73 yesterday, today high of 48, and tomorrow high of 31.. low of 14... next week we have lows of 9 and 7 :/ and ice storms! I hate that.

Next Friday is husband's oath ceremony and it's supposed to ice storm again :(

It is exciting!! I got (all fragrant):

Blc. Mem. Grant Eichler "Lennette," (one of the largest Catts out there!)

Blc. Sea Swirl 'Whirlpool,' (greeeennnnn and a good, large bloom with fringe!)

Pot. Susan Fender 'Cinnamon Stick' x Edisto, (love those colors!)

    C. Portia v. coerulea 'Sir Jeremiah Coleman' (blueeeee)

So we'll see how this goes.

  11. Mine live in this long alcove that is on the south side of the building. So they heat up pretty hot during the day (or as hot as they can be with the mediating A/C) and then cool off at night. So I think they get that 15-20* rise and fall every day in conjunciton with the photo period decreases. I imagine that's that triggers them to be a bit ahead. The alcove is about 8-9ft long so it sits pretty much out from the rest of the room or the climate controlled air blowing. Does that even make sense? LOL brain is fried. i'm trying to write this proposal and get it done today.

  12. Your keiki is awesome! And the rest of the orchid action is really cool! I checked mine yesterday and notcied about half my phals have bloom spikes. I think I am going to try to hurry up and do some fertilizing. Maybe i can get some more to bloom. My spikes are about the size of yours or shorter, so it's still pretty early in the season.

  13. i dont have windowsills and when I put them on a table the dog kept jumping up trying to see the action outside and knocked them over, like 10 times...headbonk.gif

When i was in that situation I ended up having to either hang the plants or I mounted glass shelves across the windows. But that's because I was determined. Other people are fine without and prefer to not bother. :)

  14. I've got my eye on some new varieties (well, new to me) and plan on trading for most of them. We'll see how that goes. I'm a big fan of the yellows and salmons, as well as anything with x buckleyi-type phylloclades. And even though I'm not much into reds, I am in love with Samba Brazil.

  15. Gardenias indoors isn't going to work unless you'd be willing to recreate outdoors inside- -which kind of ruins the point of central heat and air.

There really is no such thing, though, as a window area too small to do substantial growing. Take it from WOM and me. :P

Speaking of, I've been gawking at some Catt alliance orchids I reallllly want. The internet is so evil. I'm thinking of: Pot. Susan Fender 'Cinnamon Stick,' Blc. Mem. Grant Eichler "Lennette," Blc. Sea Swirl 'Whirlpool,' or Lc. Canhamiana fma. coerulea "Azure Skies."
