  4. The yardstick as far as international law goes is not that you have to be successful in your attempt to commit genocide - but that you attempt it.

In order for Israel to commit genocide they would have to basically force the Palestinian people out of their territory by a combination of mass murder and forced deportation.

That isn't happening here, though it might if the situation destabilises any more.

DALY CITY, Calif. -- It's been 61 years since I've seen my homeland of Palestine. I'm one of many Palestinian elders living in exile. And sadly, one of many who may not live to see home again.

I left Jaffa, Palestine, now part of Israel, when I was 17. It was a violent time in Palestine, leading up to the Nakba, Arabic for catastrophe, the expulsion of Palestinians from Palestine, and the creation of Israel.

My family and I fled on April 27, 1948. My cousin, who lived a block away from me, was severely injured from a missile attack on our neighborhood, but survived. The next day, Jewish defense forces said we had to leave or die, so we packed whatever we could, as fast as we could, and left for Jordan, hoping for a more peaceful, stable life. But an unstable Jordanian economy in the 1970's ended that dream and started another, in the United States.

When I came to the United States, I hid the fact that I was Palestinian, or even Arab. I said I was Greek. I was worried Americans would call me a terrorist and reject me. I surrendered my homeland and my identity as well. Some found out I was Palestinian and insulted me.

In the last two weeks, I've been glued to my television set, watching from my home here in California the fighting between Hamas and Israel in Gaza. And as I watch, I cry. Watching this is the closest I think I can get to home.

My last memories of home are like this. Chaos. Death. Blood. Tears. Fear. Anger. Screaming. And above all sadness, so much sadness. One minute you're enjoying a meal with your family and boom! you're uprooted.

One afternoon, at the end of January 1948, I was riding my bicycle home from my father's taxicab business. I was in downtown Jaffa and saw one of my uncles riding his bike. "Hurry on home!" he yelled, "I hear this area is next to get bombed!"

I didn't believe him, but I didn’t want to take any chances. I rode toward my house and he toward his. Seconds later, I heard a huge explosion. I saw buildings go up in smoke and fires behind me. Hundreds of people were running in the streets, screaming. I was shaking uncontrollably when I got home. I learned that my uncle had died in the explosion.

The violence escalated in the following days. My Jewish friends were shocked. They couldn't believe what was happening. There had been riots before, a little violence, but never like this.

Each day there were more attacks. Palestinians felt they had to retaliate, so it became violence against violence.

The Jewish defense forces began forcing people to leave their homes. If they didn't, they would kill everyone, they said. I remember Palestinian girls getting raped. I saw three sisters from my neighborhood jump into a well because the defense forces tried to rape them.

Many families who didn't have cars in which to escape scrambled to find a family that did. They squished into them, 12 to15 people to a car.

  5. Does anyone else get the feeling that not only does history repeats itself...the more we "move forward" the more behind we have fallen.

The U.N. was bombed in Gaza and the food rations there were annihilated.

People there are terrified and squeezed into a sliver of land....no water and no shelter.

Is this not genocide??Why do Israel and the U.S. (in other situations, of course) not follow international rule/laws?

    This is definitely a genocide.

One of my closest friends has now had three members of her family murdered. Two of them children.

  6. The IDF has no mercy for the children in Gaza nursery schools

    By Gideon Levy, Haaretz Correspondent

    Tags: Hamas, IDF, Israel, Gaza

The fighting in Gaza is "war deluxe." Compared with previous wars, it is child's play - pilots bombing unimpeded as if on practice runs, tank and artillery soldiers shelling houses and civilians from their armored vehicles, combat engineering troops destroying entire streets in their ominous protected vehicles without facing serious opposition. A large, broad army is fighting against a helpless population and a weak, ragged organization that has fled the conflict zones and is barely putting up a fight. All this must be said openly, before we begin exulting in our heroism and victory.

This war is also child's play because of its victims. About a third of those killed in Gaza have been children - 311, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 270 according to the B'Tselem human rights group - out of the 1,000 total killed as of Wednesday. Around 1,550 of the 4,500 wounded have also been children according to figures from the UN, which says the number of children killed has tripled since the ground operation began.

This is too large a proportion by any humanitarian or ethical standard.

It is enough to look at the pictures coming from Shifa Hospital to see how many burned, bleeding and dying children now lie there. History has seen innumerable brutal wars take countless lives.

But the horrifying proportion of this war, a third of the dead being children, has not been seen in recent memory.

God does not show mercy on the children at Gaza's nursery schools, and neither does the Israel Defense Forces. That's how it goes when war is waged in such a densely populated area with a population so blessed with children. About half of Gaza's residents are under 15.

No pilot or soldier went to war to kill children. Not one among them intended to kill children, but it also seems neither did they intend not to kill them. They went to war after the IDF had already killed 952 Palestinian children and adolescents since May 2000.

The public's shocking indifference to these figures is incomprehensible. A thousand propagandists and apologists cannot excuse this criminal killing. One can blame Hamas for the death of children, but no reasonable person in the world will buy these ludicrous, flawed propagandistic goods in light of the pictures and statistics coming from Gaza.

One can say Hamas hides among the civilian population, as if the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv is not located in the heart of a civilian population, as if there are places in Gaza that are not in the heart of a civilian population. One can also claim that Hamas uses children as human shields, as if in the past our own organizations fighting to establish a country did not recruit children.

A significant majority of the children killed in Gaza did not die because they were used as human shields or because they worked for Hamas. They were killed because the IDF bombed, shelled or fired at them, their families or their apartment buildings. That is why the blood of Gaza's children is on our hands, not on Hamas' hands, and we will never be able to escape that responsibility.

The children of Gaza who survive this war will remember it. It is enough to watch Nazareth-born Juliano Mer Khamis' wonderful movie "Arna's Children" to understand what thrives amid the blood and ruin we are leaving behind. The film shows the children of Jenin - who have seen less horror than those of Gaza - growing up to be fighters and suicide bombers.

A child who has seen his house destroyed, his brother killed and his father humiliated will not forgive.

The last time I was allowed to visit Gaza, in November 2006, I went to the Indira Gandhi nursery school in Beit Lahia. The schoolchildren drew what they had seen the previous day: an IDF missile striking their school bus, killing their teacher, Najwa Halif, in front of their eyes. They were in shock. It is possible some of them have now been killed or wounded themselves.

  7. “Zionism Today is the Real Enemy of the Jews”

    Avi Shlaim

This is an emotive subject so let me begin by stating where I stand. I have

never questioned the legitimacy of the Zionist movement or of the state of

Israel within its pre-June 1967 borders. What I reject, and reject totally, is the

Zionist colonial project beyond the 1967 border.

Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories since 1967 is the basic

problem. This is one of the most prolonged and brutal military occupations of

modern times. I condemn it above all for what it has done to the Palestinians.

But sadly, it has also eroded the democratic foundations of Israeli society.

Occupation distorted the natural course of mainstream Zionism. Zionism

was, above all, the national liberation movement of the Jewish people but it

also upheld universal values like freedom, equality, socialism, and peace.

Post-1967 Zionism, however, both in its secular and in its religious varieties,

developed a territorial obsession. It is not about values; it is about land. The

obsession is to keep the whole of the Land of Israel in the hands of the Jewish

people. This transformed the Zionist movement from a legitimate national

liberation movement for the Jews into a colonial power and an oppressor of

    the Palestinians.

By Zionism today I mean the ideological, ultra-nationalist settlers, both

religious and secular, and their supports in the Likud-led government. These

settlers are a tiny minority but they maintain a strangle-hold over the Israeli

political system. They represent the unacceptable face of Zionism. Zionism

does not equal racism, but many of these hard-line settlers and their leaders

are blatant racists. Their extremism and their excesses have led some people

to start questioning the legitimacy of the State of Israel, its very right to exist.

And it is these settlers who also endanger the safety and wellbeing of Jews

    everywhere.

Ariel Sharon personifies this xenophobic, exclusive, aggressive, and

expansionist brand of Zionism. One of the greatest accolades in Judaism is to

be a rodef shalom, a seeker of peace. Sharon is not that by any stretch of the

imagination. He is a man of war and the champion of violent solutions.

George W. Bush famously described Sharon as “a man of peace”. I have done

a bit of research on the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict and I can honestly

say that I have never come across a single shred of evidence to support the

view of Sharon as a man of peace!

Sharon’s purpose is politicide: to deny the Palestinians any independent

political existence in Palestine. For him the Palestinian Authority is not the

government of a state in-the-making but a sub-contractor that is failing in its

primary duty which is to protect Israel’s security. Sharon refuses to negotiate

with the PA on a solution to the conflict. His plan for withdrawal from Gaza

is called “the unilateral disengagement plan”. Sharon is the unilateralist par

excellence — excuse my French. He is a Jewish Rambo — the antithesis of the

traditional Jewish values of truth, justice, and tolerance.

Sharon’s government is waging a savage war against the Palestinian people -

not just militants but ordinary civilians. Its policies include

    - the confiscation of land and property

    - the demolition of houses

    - the uprooting of trees

    - curfews, roadblocks, and 736 checkpoints that inflict horrendous hardships -

systematic abuse of Palestinian human rights

    - and the culture of impunity that allows Israeli soldiers to kill not only

Palestinian children but peace activists like Rachel Corrie and Tom Hurndall.

Last but not least there is the so-called security barrier that Israel is building

in the West Bank. Its declared purpose is to prevent terrorist attacks but it is

as much about land-grabbing as it is about security. By building the wall

Israel is unilaterally redrawing the borders at the expense of the Palestinians.

It is “in your face” violence against the Palestinians. It separates children from

their schools, farmers from their land, and whole villages from their medical

facilities. The wall is a flagrant violation of international law. It was

condemned by the International Court of Justice and by the UN General

Assembly but construction continues regardless. It is not for nothing that

Sharon used to be called “the bulldozer”.

It is this brand of cruel Zionism that is the real enemy of what remains of

liberal Israel and of the Jews outside Israel. It is the enemy because it fuels the

flames of virulent and sometimes violent anti-Semitism. Israel¹s policies are

the cause; hatred of Israel and anti-Semitism are the consequences.

There has been much talk in recent years about “the new anti-Semitism”. The

argument, in a nutshell, is that the resurgence of anti-Semitism has little or

nothing to do with Israel¹s behaviour. Anti-Zionism is merely a surrogate, so

the argument runs, for bad, old-fashioned anti-Semitism.

These arguments need to be addressed. First of all: what is anti-Semitism?

Isaiah Berlin defined an anti-Semite as “someone who hates Jews more than is

strictly necessary!” This mischievous definition has the merit of applying to

all anti-Semitism, old as well as new.

But we need to look beyond the labels. Is there a lot of classic anti-Semitism

about? Yes. Do some people use anti-Zionism as a respectable cover for their

despicable Judeophobia? Yes.What is the relative weight of hatred of Israel on

the one hand and Judeophobia on the other in the making of the new anti-

    Semitism? I don’t know.

What I do know is that a lot of decent people, without any anti-Semitic

baggage, are really upset and angry with Israel over its inhumane treatment

of the Palestinians. There is simply no getting away from the fact that

attitudes towards Israel have changed in recent years as a result of its own

shift towards the Zionism of the extreme Right and of the radical rabbis. We

have to recall that during the years of the Oslo peace process, when Itzhak

Rabin and Shimon Peres were leading, Israel was the favourite of the West.

Anti-Semitism was limited because they gave the message that Israel was

willing to withdraw from the occupied territories for the sake of peace.

Sharon’s government is prepared to withdraw from Gaza but only as a

prelude to annexing large chunks of the West Bank to Greater Israel. This is a

recipe not for peace but for perpetual conflict, violence, and bloodshed.

Israel¹s image today is negative not because it is a Jewish state but because it

habitually transgresses the norms of acceptable international behaviour.

Indeed, Israel is increasingly perceived as a rogue state, as an international

pariah, and as a threat to world peace.

In a Eurobarometer poll in 2003, 59% of respondents said the Israel posed a

threat to world peace. This was the highest percentage for any of the 15

countries on the list. America was the runner-up with 53%.

This perception of Israel, I submit, is a major factor in the recent resurgence of

anti-Semitism in Europe and in the rest of the world. In other words, Zionism

today is the real enemy of the Jews.

Chaim Weizmann wrote in his autobiography that Zionism will be judged by

its treatment of the Palestinians. Well, in this respect, Zionism today is a

    catastrophic failure.

But the principal purpose of Zionism was to provide a haven for the Jewish

people after the Holocaust. It is very melancholy to have to add that, in this

respect too, Zionism turned out to be a failure. Israel is now one of the least

safe places on earth for Jews to live in.

This sorry state of affairs is unlikely to end until the Zionist colonial project

across the 1967 border comes to an end. Zionism’s supreme interest lies in

ending the illegal occupation of what is another people’s land.

Israel ought to withdraw from the occupied territories not as a favour to the

Palestinians but as a favour to itself for, as Karl Marx noted, a people that

oppresses another cannot itself remain free.

  8. Thanks for posting.

Representative Kucinich has spoken very fairly on the House floor about the current genocide in Gaza.

ACTION: THANK REP. KUCINICH FOR CONDEMNATION OF ISRAELI ACTIONS -

Ohio congressman seeks enforcement of U.S. Arms Export Control Act

Today on the House floor, Rep. Kucinich said:

“What is going on in America? We have trillions for a war machine and banks while our government stands by and sniffs at the slaughter of innocents in Gaza, where Israel is blocking aid for wounded Palestinians. Here’s today’s Washington Post it says: ‘The International Committee of the Red Cross said Thursday that it found at least 15 bodies and several children, emaciated but alive - - in a row of shattered houses in the Gaza strip and accused the Israeli military of preventing ambulances from reaching the site for four days....12 corpses lying on mattresses in one home, along with four young children lying next to their dead mothers.’ That’s a quote.

“Today U.S. tax dollars, U.S. jets and U.S. helicopters provided to Israel are enabling the slaughter in Gaza. The Administration enables Israel to press forward with the attack against defenseless civilians; blocks efforts promoting a cease-fire at the UN; and refuses to make Israel comply with conditions that arms shipments not be used for aggression. Israel is going to receive $30 billion in a ten-year period for military assistance, without having to abide by any humanitarian principles, international laws or s tandards of basic human decency. Wake up America.”

In his statement yesterday to Congress, Rep. Kucinich said:

“We cannot truly celebrate a New Year, a new Congress and a new administration if all we see is the same old destruction in the Middle East with US weapons being illegally used to kill children.“I oppose Hamas' rocket attacks on Israel. The rocket attacks, even to try to end the blockade, have no moral justification, are illegal and must stop.“But how can Israel claim self defense when it bombs Gaza which has no army, no air force, no navy and has been under a constant blockade?“How can Israel claim self defense when its bombs destroy UN schools, killing children?“The children of Palestinians and the children of Israel both deserve life. But the lives of the children of Gaza are cynically discounted as ‘human shields.’ Massacres are being rationalized. Israel's ‘moral high ground’ in Gaza, a growing pile of small bones in a graveyard.“The Administration knows Israel is using US weapons, paid for by US taxpayers, with disproportionate force creating a collective punishment of Gazans, assuring an escalation of conflict, clear violations of the Arms Export Control Act. “Israel was given U.S. weapons on condition they would not be used for aggression or escalation. The outgoing Administr ation must finally stand for the rule of law, not the rule of force.”

Rep Kucinich also sent notice to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Israel’s actions in Gaza since December 27th, 2008, may constitute a violation of the AECA.In his letter, Rep. Kucinich wrote in part:

“…I hereby request an examination of Israel’s compliance with the provisions of the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 (AECA)… “The extensive destruction of such civilian institutions violates Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the wanton destruction of property and collective punishment of a civilian population. There have also been reports of bombings of United Nations (UN) schools, despite the fact that Israeli Defense Forces were allegedly given coordinates of the facilities prior to the current escalation in violence. The blockade that Israel has imposed on Gaza since 2006 has further exacerbated the extent of collateral damage, as hospitals and morgues have been unable to cope with the magnitude of deaths and injuries as a result of the current escalation in violence and hospitals lack proper supplies needed to treat the injured…”

THANK CONGRESSMAN KUCINICH for his courageous stand in support of both the rule of law and peace with justice in the Middle East. CONTACT:=2 0The Honorable Dennis J. Kucinich

  9. Spoonfed news leads one to believe that Hamas was the instigator.

CNN confirms that Israel broke the ceasefire first

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KntmpoRXFX4

Israel did not abide by the rules of the 18 month ceasefire...........it kept Gaza's borders shut......residents had no means of getting food or water other than what was smuggled in through underground tunnels from Egypt, they were not free to leave to look for work, people outside were not free to enter which could have helped Gaza's businesses, they continued to set curfews, electricity was cut off......etc......Hamas, whether or not we as Americans approve of them, were elected by Palestinians in a democratic style election because it was clear that the Israeli govt. wasn't going to care for Gazans and supply them with food, electricity, etc........Even if Hamas broke the ceasefire first, which it didn't, do they not have the right to defend themselves against an occupation and violations of ceasefire agreements??? Why is it OK for Israelis to defend themselves and not OK for Palestinians to do the same??? Why is there a double standard?

  10. Allousa......I am sooooooo sorry for your family's loss. My heart aches for the children.

I pray that the madness ends soon and that the truth surfaces and that, if there is anything good to be learned from this, that people all over the world will realize that the murders being committed by the Israeli government have nothing to do with Judaism......but rather, everything to do with political agendas timed just weeks before an Israeli election is due to take place. Judaism does not equal Zionism.

  11. Correct me if I'm wrong...but I do believe that Hamas was a low level grass roots organization that gained funding from Israel in hopes of fracturing Fatah and Arafat in the 80's. I'm pretty sure.

Much like the U.S. has done, we pour money into thugs to do our bidding and when they no longer become useful, we label them a terrorist and spend endless amounts of money trying to shut them up and take them out. Hmmmm, makes a whole lot of sense!

I'm SICK TO DEATH of all the political and military B.S., and not just in the U.S.

    Me too.

If Hamas is a terrorist organization, then Israel is a terrorist state.

  12. The Israelis have to justify their terrorist actions somehow.

Hicham was able to talk with his sister today. Thank god they are still alive. She told him that the bombing is all around and they don't understand why because there isn't Hamas in the area in which they live. She said her children are unable to sleep at night because of the noise from the bombings and the planes/choppers overhead. She also said that there are more deaths than are being reported. She's heard estimates of over 1000 dead, but that can't be confirmed. She also said that the people that are wounded are as good as dead because the hospitals can't help them. She also said that there is no care or precision on how the bombs are being dropped. She didn't have long to talk because she only had power for a short time and needed to make bread for them to eat since they are afraid to go out.

Please keep praying that she and her family will make it through this. I will keep you updated as we hear from her.

This is the true story from the mouth of an eyewitness. I pray your SIL will be ok, her family will survive. Its interesting how pro Israeli people keep saying Hamas is useing people as human shields... Does this sound like that to you???

  13. Continue to monitor his blood pressure in the next few hours......if the readings don't go lower and if he continues to feel dizzy or if he starts getting a fever or any other symptoms......don't wait.......I know it stinks to have to seek medical care w/out insurance but, you shouldn't take any chances when it comes to these things.

    I hope he gets better.

good morning, thanks for the anniversary wishes yesterday :)

i get to spend my saturday morning at the dentist office for my son. i wish i could have stayed in bed just for a few more hours!

Happy Anniversary! Hope Im not too late for the wishes!!! :star: (F)

Also, I got a question about blood pressure being high... Last night while Adam was working he got a bit dizzy and his head was bothering him but not with a headache. He works 10pm to 7am so this was about 230am on his one hour break that he called me so I told him to go check his blood pressure... it was 142/67. Then he talked to his manager about going home bcz he was feeling more dizzy. WHen I picked him up I had him do another test... this was about 15 30 minutes after the first test. It was 146/87 with a heartbeat of 90+ which to me seems like high blood pressure. So I bought some apple cider vinegar and we went home. I had him take a tablespoon of that with a glass of water and then he slept. Now, when he woke up his head is hot and still bothering him and I had him take the apple cider vinegar again and we will go check his blood pressure at walmart again. Does anyone have any other ideas of what to do .... im really trying to go natural so he dont have to spend at least $100 at a doc with no insurance!

  14. I wish we had something like that........that would be convenient........I'm positive we don't.

Anyone know which breast pump is considered to be the best........medela, playtex......regular size or compact..........single or double..............there are so many......which would be a good one to take to work?

Are you certain your work doesn't already have one? I found out by sheer accident (was looking for a room to pray in) that we have a "mother's room" on the floor below us fully equipped with a hospital type pump that apparently (per the moms that I know use it) is super powerful. Might want to just ask around before spending the $$$.
