    Hello VJ family,

I hope this topic would be beneficial for others in my situation.

I have be with my company for 25 years in Canada. I would like to know what happens to your company pension as you cannot transfer to an American job. HR at my company is no help.

It depends on whether you would be emigrating before (or after) you are eligible to draw on your (Canadian) company pension.

In my case, I retired from my Canadian job before I emigrated to the US.  I kept my Canadian bank account and had my pension deposited to that account.  I signed up for the Canadian Snowbird Association Currency Exchange Program (https://www.snowbirds.org/member-benefits/currency-exchange/ ) and made arrangements for my  pension to be converted from Canadian dollars to US dollars on a monthly basis and deposited to my US bank account.

    Hello All:

We went to the Biometrics appointment today and disappointingly enough, my wife's fingerprints were poorly recognized by the machine (as happened in the I-485 process).

For those select "lucky" few that have encountered this problem, the technician recommended that if the fingerprints are not recognized, that upon receiving the notification to re-do the biometrics, to go out and buy corn huskers lotion, which is supposed to be a heavy duty lotion that moisturizes dry skin and can enhance the ridge detail of fingerprints (which was the problem here). Supposedly, as soon as that notice is received, start the lotioning up 5 times a day with that stuff and the night before, lotion up your hand and sleep with a glove on to ensure that the fingerprint takes.

Seriously worth the effort. At this point in time, if the second fingerprint fails, I have read here that it involves getting the police clearances all over again from all the places of residence (I am assuming this means overseas too) - a real fun endeavor last time...

Hope it helps whoever has this problem.

I've also found that using O'Keefe's Working Hands hand cream makes it easier for fingerprint machines to get a proper image of my prints.

Can someone suggest an accountant who is an expert in cross border tax planning ?
specifically I have questions about what date am I US resident … would it be when I first enter usa using my IR visa even if I come back to Canada to vacate my apartment?

also are my non registered assets automatically considered as disposed and do I have To pay tax on it ?

I've used American Expat Tax Services for the past two tax years and am happy with the service they've given me.

Here's the Canadian Revenue Agency's position on deemed disposition of assets, including a list of assets that would be exempt from deemed disposition taxes.

I'm really pleased.  I had been expecting this part of the process to take another two weeks.

(Next step:  Renew my expired driver's license.)

  5. Hi GeauxGirl,

You can request certified true copies of your Canadian passport from the (Canadian) Passport Service Office.  You'd have to turn in your original Canadian passport, but would get it back in 10 business days, along with your certified copies.  The fee is $45 for each request of 1-3 certified true copies of your Canadian passport, so it's most cost effective to request 3 copies.  You can then apply for your ITIN by sending in one of your certified true copies, instead of your actual Canadian passport.

(In the future, if you ever need to renew your Canadian passport and think you may need certified true copies... it's probably best to renew the passport and request certified copies at the same.)

No luck. They say they only keep records from 1985 onwards..... Also said they have no archived records from before this year. Hmm

After I called my public health unit people, I received my records from Alberta Health Services.  Their contact information:

Alberta Health Services Immunization Records, phone:  780-413-7985

    The records I received were:

    1.  Infant and Pre-School Clinic form I22 0206

    2.  Edmonton Board of Health - Confidential Health Record.

Good luck with the search for your documents.

Heads up for Alberta. If you’ve lost your childhood records, they only go back to 1985. I lost mine, so I’m just going to get the 3 or 4 vaccines done in Montreal at Medisys when I get my physical done.

I’m from Alberta, too. I called a local Public Health Centre and was able to get pre-1985 immunization records. The records had to be accessed from some archival location, but they were available. I received a faded copy of a handwritten record of immunization shots given to me in the 1960s / 1970s. I had to tell them my maiden name.  Here’s a link to help you find contact info for a local Public Health Centre:

  8. Hello car1112,  You can start entering (and saving) information for the DS 260 in CEAC.  There is a screen at the end that asks for you electronic sign-off/ submission. DO NOT do the final submission when you are done. Let your lawyer review your information first and let your lawyer make the final submission

This is because the system locks down (prevents further edits) once there is a formal submission of data.  You wouldn’t want to prevent your lawyer from checking your input and offering advice before the form is formally submitted to the NVC

If I am not mistaken this is the type of police check we should request for (https://www.canada.ca/en/parole-board/services/expungements/step-2-court-police-documents/fingerprint-based-criminal-record-check.html). Now I know the purpose of the link is not for immigration, but the type of check described in this link seems to be similar to the one the consulate is asking for. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I would be inclined to agree with you.  I went to Commissionaires today and was told that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was adamant that the request be made under the Privacy Act.  According to the link you shared, Privacy Act searches includes searches of pardon records.  The person at Commissionaires also said that the DHS is aware that cannot be certified by the RCMP, but were okay with that.  (I got the impression that certified, "visa/border crossing" type searches might not include searches of pardon records.)

Now, I'm just hoping there's no postal strike.  CUPW workers will be in a legal position to strike on Sept 27th.
