  1. It's almost a year to the date i got my citizenship and just had to stop by this thread. It's funny how i was always on here hoping, lurking and freaking out with every post lol... now it's just but a memory. Life is funny that way. Glad to see most, if not all have gotten their citizenship.

For anyone still in this journey, please know that yours will come and go and all the worrying, what-ifs and random panicking will be long gone. Wishing everyone the best of luck in their respective journeys and thanks to this forum for making my life bearable for that entire process.

    peace and love

    Hi @Life_love

June 2018 filer here. Still nothing. I put on my previous posts that I even contacted my local congresswoman to help find out the status and all I got was that I was withing the time frame.

From previous posts it seems IF USCIS actually follows a timeline we might be getting our notices sometime in December and interview sometime in January.

I absolutely agree, I think it's discouraging because they don't seem to follow any sort of timeline. I swear they have a box with all our applications and they just pull it out of that haha.

If I hear anything I will surely keep you updated.

Thank you, i wish you get your interview very soon but its comforting to know my cousin's not the only one waiting. It feels like forever waiting on just an interview...when i did mine i only waited 3 months but that was  back in 2013... my how times have change.

I filed for renewal by myself. Super easy. Didn’t have to pay! (Sent in the bar code which came with the original EAD . It says on the paper send it back with the renewal.) I got it in 2 weeks.

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting out there! 🍀🤞

    Hi,

yes I had to file a renewal for my EAD, it should be free but I had to pay my lawyer $150 for preparing the renewal.

Yeah even that is pretty delayed. I renewed back in June and still waiting for it now.

Thanks a lot guys...one last question, would it be an issue if the current ead is expired? It expired last week (the i-485 is still pending tho)

USCIS is feeling extra experimental these days. From cutting of liaison inquiries to forcing InfoPass appointments to go through a phone call vetting system to conducting more and more interviews, USCIS customers and immigration attorneys hardly know what to expect when appearing for an interview.

One of the latest changes deals with how Naturalization interviews are conducted. Instead of one officer completing the entire process, applicants now go through a three step process. I want to believe that this system was designed in the hopes of creating a streamlined and efficient process, but that’s not what I’ve seen.

    Step One - Update Information
Applicants meet an officer in the customer service area. There are 11 stations, each one about four feet apart. The set-up is a bit like at the bank – there’s no privacy, the person at the next station is conducting their business. This officer’s job is to update verify and update the information on the Naturalization application. They have applicants state their full name, current address, date of birth and Social Security Number. They also ask if anything has changed since filing – from residence to job to recent travel. Fingerprints and a new picture (for security purposes) are taken.

Step Two – Civics and English Exam
Applicants meet with a second officer who will conduct the Civics and English examination. Again, this is in the customer service area. The officer reads through the examination questions and the applicant provides the answer. The English exam is conducted on a tablet that is upright at each station. A sentence appears on the table screen and the applicant reads it aloud. Then a second screen appears and the client is asked to write a sentence using a stylus.

    Step Three – “Interview”
Although clients are under oath and are talking with officers in Steps One and Two, the actual interview is conducted upstairs in a private office with another officer. This third officer goes through the entire application. They verify changes made in Step One, they collect new documents, and go through all of the “yes/no” questions. They’ll address any issue that may cause concern, maybe looking at bona fides of a marriage or reviewing criminal records. This third officer is the one who makes a decision to recommend the case for approval or not.

There are plenty of problems with this new process.

    • Lack of privacy in Steps One and Two

All of your personal information is being shared out in a public space. Anyone in the waiting area could jot down everything they would need to steal your identity. Hopefully the people there are all good and decent human beings, but it’s unnerving to share all of this information in such a public and open space.

    • Lack of space in Steps One and Two

The waiting room in the customer service area has around 30 seats, as compared with the waiting rooms on the second and third floor which have around 150 seats. There simply isn’t enough room in the customer service for an applicant, family, an interpreter and an attorney for each case. Sure, some cases may have only one person involved, but I have seen people forced to stand while waiting.

    • Hard to hear in Steps One and Two

This is an open area and if you were hard of hearing or were limited in your English proficiency, hearing the officer in front of you will be difficult. There is a lot of extra noise in the customer service area and another interview could be going on less than four feet from you. Being able to hear and focus are paramount, yet this environment is far from ideal.

    • Waiting Time

The process forces applicants to wait three times. First to be called for the updates, then for the exam, and finally for the interview. There can be gaps of anywhere between two minutes to two hours between the steps, with the largest gap often coming right before step three.

    • Inability to Coordinate Attorneys

Because clients are spread out between two floors and in three different steps, it is extremely difficult for an attorney with several interviews scheduled at the same time to be present and represent clients in each step. USCIS is forcing clients to either sign a waiver saying they’ll move forward with the application without the attorney or request a reschedule of the interview. Attorneys are essentially forced to choose between clients on who they’ll be present with. In the past, USCIS would work with attorneys to ensure everyone who had represented by counsel could, indeed, be represented. They’ve stopped working with us.

USCIS has officers who want to do the right thing, who want to provide quality customer service. This process, though, is severely lacking. If USCIS wants to truly improve the Naturalization interview process they should look at the following:

    • Do biometrics before the interview
    • Have one officer conduct the entire interview – from conducting the English and Civics exam to taking new documents to updating the form to evaluating eligibility.
    • Evaluate cases ahead of time. Officers (not the one making the decision to avoid any potential conflict of interest) could look at the file before the interview, note what information or documentation is missing, and contact the applicant with a case-specific list. USCIS provides every applicant with the same list, but an individual list would be helpful. This is particularly true on any cases involving a criminal issue. Clients don’t always remember arrests or the details, but USCIS knows this information. Why not tell people ahead of time that they need a certified disposition and probation competition letter regarding a June 15, 2003 arrest in Fulton County, GA for Theft by Shoplifting (for example)?
    • Work with attorneys who provide at least two weeks’ notice on schedule conflicts. Applicants have a right to representation – they shouldn’t be punished at the last minute because their attorney has multiple interviews at the same time.

I don’t think this policy was meant to complicate the Naturalization process, but it’s clear that this new process isn’t helping with efficiency. It’s duplicative, it’s a waste of resources and time., it’s confusing. If USCIS wants to create a better process, there are certainly better ways to do it.

Thank you very much! Since my ceremony was at 12:30 and it didn't get done until 2PM, I ended up heading home without dealing with anything (no passport, or SSN, or voting) because we had to go back to pick up the kiddo from daycare before 5 (and you know what traffic looks like on a Friday in Atlanta), so I couldn't risk staying long knowing that without traffic it already takes me an hour and a half to get home.

Nonetheless, if you don't mind all the questions... What all did you have to do for your SSN? I've already had a card/# for a few years now, but I wasn't sure if now I'd get a new number or if I even needed to do anything. As for the passport, I will call my local USPS today and get that handled, and I presume that the voting portion shouldn't be too hard, either.

Thank you for all your help on this, and congratulations on becoming a citizen as well :)

Congratulations again and thank you...always happy to help whenever I can!!

I actually just got my SSN and license updated this last Friday. For the SSN, I didn't need to book an appointment or fill out any form. I just walked in and signed in at the visitors' sign-in kiosk.  Once done, it printed a ticket #, thankfully I didn't have to wait too long. Once called in, I told the guy I just wanted to update my SSN because I am now a citizen. I showed him my passport and SSN (He asked for both items), and my license (he also asked for it, cos he needed something with my address in it). He made some updates on the computer, printed out a receipt and told me to confirm the name and address. Then mentioned that I'll be receiving a new SSN card in the mail in about 10 business days (same card number). And that was it.

Voter registration is easy, you can do it online or at the DMV. Here's the link to register online https://registertovote.sos.ga.gov/GAOLVR/welcometoga.do#no-back-button

Good luck calling and speaking to someone at USPS..they never respond in my experience. You can always book an appointment online if calling fails. Here's the link: https://tools.usps.com/go/pages/schedule-appointment/index.jsp

It sure does, thank you very much! Of course USCIS gets their final laugh at me and scheduled mine on May 10th at 12:30PM. Anyone living in Atlanta knows what traffic looks like around lunch time, so I guess they wanted to get a final jab in while they could :)

At the appointment at USPS, I presume you had to mail in your certificate, then sounds like your passport was mailed back to you first, then the certificate separately?

lol...yup just make time to accommodate the traffic. And don't be like me, take the day off work ...enjoy the entire day.

Yes for the USPS appointment, you will have to submit the original certificate so be sure to make copies for your keepsake. Based on my experience and others on here, the passport comes first, then the Nat. Cert. I have yet it see it the other way around. So if you want to update your drivers' license and SSN beforehand you should take advantage of that.

Also, I'd advise you to go ahead and book an appointment on USPS now (like today) because they go by so fast (at least in my area, Gwinnett). The earliest appointment I could get was 3 weeks after I got naturalized and that was by luck because it wasn't originally opened (someone must have canceled their appointment). Prior to that, the earliest was over a month out. I tried to go for walk-ins at the local library but it was on a first come first serve basis (it opened by 10 am and people were there by 7 am..they stopped taking walk-ins after a certain amount of people).

On another note... How long did the oath ceremony take/last for you guys? Were you able to register to vote/apply for a passport on that same day? How long of a day was it overall?

Not trying to rush things, but the wife and I are trying to plan a celebratory lunch that day and we have to coordinate the hours so that the little one is picked up at a decent time from daycare :) And it doesn't help we live 1:30 away from the service center...

The Oath Ceremony itself took about 10-15 minutes; watching the America the beautiful video, National Anthem, message from Trump, then a message from the district director. Once she read the note she told us to stand up and read the oath of allegiance located in the packets for each person. Families were allowed to take pictures, we were told new citizens with kids under 18 are automatically US Citizens. Then we were instructed, and very firmly to walk to the front, row by row to collect our certificate. The lady in charge said walk and read, meaning as soon as you collect it, walk out of the door while reading it thoroughly to make sure there were no mistakes. If you find any mistakes you can correct it for free on the day but anything found after would take longer and cost you. So walk and read and leave (that's what she said, but we could come back in to take pictures when everyone had collected their certificate).

The entire process took about an hour. Most of it was spent waiting and collecting the form that came with the oath ceremony (You need to fill it beforehand). We also waited for everyone to arrive. After that, we walked into the ceremony room where we stood in line to submit our green card and EAD or any other immigration docs we had (like advance parole and whatnot).  I submitted my green card and an old EAD and was given a ticket with a number (that corresponded to the chair #). While we waited for the ceremony to start,  a representative from the league of women voters told us that we can register to vote immediately after we got our certificate. Registration was done on the 3rd floor (there were volunteers holding a sign to direct new citizens...everything went by so fast). you fill out a simple form with your name, last 4 of your SSN, dob, email, phone #, and county you reside. Then they take a copy of your certificate and hand it over to you, with other instructions of how you can track your registration. (ps: since I registered, 3/4/2019, I still haven't gotten my voters card and it says I'm not registered online).

In the packet, there is a passport application form and instructions on where you can walk in for an appointment...located downtown Atlanta. I didn't bother with that, instead, I booked an appointment with my local USPS. My passport application was sent 3/27 and I received my passport last week on the 25th and my naturalization certificate on the 27th. So the entire process took a month.

All in all, everything took an hour to an hour 40 minutes, because of waiting and me doing the most by taking pictures at every corner of that office knowing it would be my last time there lol. I was back to work by before 10:30 am and carried on my day as usual (oath letter sais show up by 7:30 am).

    I hope this helps, lol.

Honestly, even the interview felt impersonal, haha. I expected the whole thing to be done in a interview room of some sort, but after having the reading/writing test done while standing at a regular window, I lowered my expectations for whatever was to come next as a whole, haha.

oh wow, that's new!!! i did my interview in an interview room. I guess standing and taking the test is a good thing for future filers because it might indicate a faster/quicker interview process and less chance of scrutinizing every single detail in one's file.

  10. And just like that my vj tracking journey is over. As always, I'm very grateful to everyone that has helped me directly and indirectly on this awesome forum. The only thing i have left to do is, update my ssn and drivers license.

My passport application took exactly a month 3/27 - 4/27 from start to finish. Time to look for tickets to some random place in Europe, lol.

  12. 24 minutes ago, Carlos Santana said:

Passed my interview yesterday! Brought all documents and all of that jazz, and the agent never asked for a single thing other than my green card and interview letter. Apparently I had sent in more than enough information when I sent the application. Only thing we had to change was my trips to outside of the U.S. (which I had a few since submitting the application in March '18), and adding my son to the records since he also didn't exist when the application was submitted.

Nonetheless, it was pretty straight forward, and more or less split into 3 phases:

    1. Sat with a lady and went over some of my information (which is when we added the new trips and my son to my records)

    2. Civics/reading/writing test, which took maybe 5 minutes tops

    3. Sit down with an actual agent who went over most of the yes/no questions with me again and got me to sign a few things, but didn't take more than 20 minutes either.

All in all, I got there at 10:30AM for my 11:30AM interview, and was out of there by 1:30PM. So as you can imagine, the only thing that took a while was the wait in between phases.

Regardless, I can't believe I am finally done with all of this! It's been 10 years since I left Brazil, and since then I've been a J1, a F1, had my OPT, conditional residency, permanent residency, and now, finally, will become a citizen :)

Now onto waiting for the oath ceremony!

yay!!! so happy to hear this...Thank God!! and congratulations. The oath ceremony in Atlanta is rather lackluster and impersonal but the feeling of completion, to be finally done after all these years is well worth it.

    Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!
