  1. I posted weeks back that I was going to be returning to Canada due to marriage breakdown but am now happy to report that my husband and I are working things out instead.

I'm currently working on the citizen app and of course will be including my 16 year old son. I understand if I gain citizenship he automatically becomes one too.

Here is the dumb question. When I send in my payment for the app fee and biometric fee along with the 2 passport photos for myself, am I also supposed to include the passport photos and biometric fee for him?

    Thanks!

  2. With so many marriages failing here in the US. What are some of the key things that you VJ members think that will keep your marriage or future marriage from falling apart.

Well...with my marriage on its last legs, I can issue a few words of advice.

    Ladies...don't marry a mama's boy.

Everyone...if your SO is from a psycho family, i.e. the mother is a passive aggressive cow still bitter about a 25 year-old divorce, the sister is a narcissistic, self-absorbed immature twit pushing 40, and the dad isn't in the picture....RUN. RUN FAR AWAY.

I personally will be steering clear of men who have had ongoing problems with depression/anxiety. No offense, but it's way more than I ever want to deal with again.

You are so right about the mama's boy. I am married to a 57 year old mama's boy and this is part of the reason of my upcoming return to Canada to live permanently. That, in addition to the family members (3 of who are in professional positions) that feel it's ok to have a big time drug dealer in their as well as your home to keep a 23 year old druggie niece/granddaughter happy. And also make sure your future spouse will not be ragging on you because you are unable to secure a full time job. Can you tell I'm bitter?

  3. Are you allowed to have someone give you a ride to the states when you move? My fiancee is worried that the border guards would think my parents were trying to get into the states. That couldn't be farther from the truth. I don't have a car and really don't want to just drive down there alone. Besides, I wanted to show my parents around.

I can't see it being a problem. My parents drove my son and I across the border at Buffalo back in June 2002. I told the border guard I was entering on a K1 and my son on a K2. The guy didn't even question my parents being in the vehicle, with my dad at the wheel. You could always call for peace of mind as already suggested.

  4. Oh, I remember those! I used to sing them myself, hehehe.

Thanks for the memories. Wow, just think - another 10 years and Canada will be celebrating its 150th birthday!

LOL I plan to sing the Ontario song all the way back to Ontario this summer.

  5. I'm sorry to hear that it's not working out. :(

I recall you were thinking of applying for naturalization. I take it your son is not interested to do that either?

My son couldn't care less either way. My youngest daughter back in Canada is looking at flying over and driving back with us. It's a 2200 mile trip.

One positive thing in the future is that my oldest daughter is having a baby in September. Her first child, my first grandchild.

This was not how I envisioned it to end up.

  6. You likely know this, but just in case you don't.....it would be a good idea to check the "Effects of Major Family Changes on Immigration Benefits" forum . Lots of good advice on divorce there. All the best to you. (F) M.

Thanks! How the heck did I miss that?

  7. I am the Canadian citizen (as you can see by my nickname) and will be heading back to Canada next month to live permanently, along with my 16 year old son. I would have been married 5 years this July 1 but unfortunately things are not working out. I won't go into details.

I'm sure this has been dealt with a million times over but since it never applied to me, I didn't read posts on it. Could someone provide any information on what I should know such as bringing a 5 year old car into Canada, I'd be hauling a small U Haul trailer as well filled with personal effects, no furniture however. My son and I have the 10 year card, do I turn those in to U.S. Immigration somewhere? Anything else I should be aware of?

    Thanks for any help.

  8. Has anyone heard from Chris-n-Veronica? He lived in Idaho and his fiancee from Moldova was flying over around the beginning of March. I believe in one of his posts (before she arrived) he said that hey would marry on April 21. I wonder if they did. If so, congratulations! :D

  9. Depends on how much. Here is my list

    1. Remodel home we are currently in

    2. Buy a cottage up in northern Ontario, Canada on a lake to spend our summers

    3. Help out my two oldest daughters

    4. Get my son to College

    5. Help out my parents

    6. Travel

    7. Donate to a couple of Humane Societies - one here, one in Ontario (I love animals).

    8. Invest some.

  10. My son (16 years old) and I are eligible to apply for citizenship next month. Our passports however expire in June. Is a valid passport required to apply for citizenship? I read that the fees are supposedly going up in June and didn't want to put off applying for citizenship after that month. Just can't afford to pay for both citizenship and new passports right now.

    Thanks!

  11. Talking to my mother (she's Canadian) and she was saying that she was told American citizens over the age of 75 do not have to file an income tax return if they have a certain amount of income coming in. Only those over 75 with lots of money file. Does anyone have knowledge of this?
