    I *think* all visas go through AP. B2 certainly do. Generally speaking, the length of AP is something very individual. Some people go through brief AP while others experience much longer AP due to thorough background checks.

    From my observations prior Visa's do not seem to make much difference to the process, well I would anticpate you will get it, but that time line will be similar.

    Usually days, sometimes weeks, rarely months, and very rarely years. There's no way to know for sure which one it will be ahead of time. Was a particular reason for AP stated at the interview?

    It's possible...nobody can say for sure what triggers the additional checks. Work experience in STEM fields is one potential factor. The fact that they took your passport is a good sign. Hopefully it's only days or weeks!

    I would anticipate your Nationality is the major factor.

    Yeah, Iranian with a chem background is probably it. Again, nobody can say for sure, but that's the most likely culprit.
