Apparently when you get the i-551 stamp its totally up to the officer if they keep the greencard or not.
When I did mine they allowed me to keep my greencard and kept my extension letter (in another forum people told me theirs were taken)
My sister just got her i551 30 minutes ago in another city and she said the officer told her "Some officers keep your green-card, but here, keep your green-card, your extension letter, and here is a letter of why you visited and what we did today in case anyone asks questions when you travel, that way you can avoid problems." Seems like nicest immigration officer ever.

I believe some people here are saying something that is incorrect.... When you get the i551 stamp they take your extension letter, not the actual green card. The actual green card you keep, even if expired, because you have to turn it in the day you become a citizen (I just went through this whole process recently.)

You are correct, technically not a visa... But yes, extensions and changes of status are valid even if never stamped.

Like @Mollie09 says, not having it stamped on your passport does not have anything to do with it being valid or not. The only reason you need it stamped is to be able to come back into the country. I went through 3 different visas (and various renewals of those) while living here for over a decade without leaving the country, so I never got them stamped, and was never out of status. So it sounds like you have always been in status, nothing to worry about on that side.

I recently became a citizen and was scared also as I was filling the n400 out, but found out the following:
- If he did not have his green card between 18 & 26 (or an immigration visa), then he did not need to register (this was my case, I was living between 18 & 26 in the US but had various non-immigrant visas, so apparently I did not have the duty to register)
- Also, as long as the applicant it 31 or older, it is not an issue either (see "USCIS officers:" paragraph https://www.sss.gov/Registration/Status-Information-Letter)

Yesterday, I helped a British friend fill out his N-400 online. He's been here in the US long enough that he has a "permanent" green card. It doesn't expire. In fact, at the time he entered (1984), LPR pictures were taken at an angle - the rule being you had to "show one ear"!!!
I had one minor heart attack when it came to the Selective Service question. The question asks (if you are male) if you were in the US between your 18th and 26th birthday. His answer was "yes". I asked him if he had registered for the Selective Service. He said no - he did not KNOW he had to register. So we clicked on the link for the Selective Service to see what he had to do.
Well. He was born in August, 1959. There is a paragraph saying that if you were born before December xx, 1959, you did not have to register, as the software system wasn't in place.
So I had him cut and paste that paragraph from the Selective Service site, and put it in the explanation box for why he did register. But then I told him to make sure he didn't need to have an official letter from the Selective Service. I also told him to print out a copy of the web page that clearly states that he did not have to register and take it with him to the interview.
He's not on Visa Journey, but I'm keeping track of him. He filed on February 27th. Honestly, I am so glad he let me help him fill out the form. He has been putting it off for years - and I know he would have just given up several times - but luckily, I was able to answer his questions quickly!

Hey sunshinestate2013... sorry to hear. I was a July 2017 applicant and was always looking at the March 2017 N-400 forum since you were the closest Miami applicant I could find. I had my interview and oath ceremony last week (never heard on my i-751 which was filed a year prior), so hang in there. I'm guessing because my application was online it was processed a bit quicker?

I am now a United States citizen! 17 years in this country, I've had all kinds of visas and finally will not have to worry about anything like that again!
My ceremony in Miami was at the same USCIS office, there were 100 of us becoming citizens from 27 different countries. Invite said 10:30, but I guess that was to give people time as it really started at 11AM. There was the same beautiful speeches and videos that everyone mentions ; the speaker called out and asked people to stand as each of their own countries of origin were mentioned, and an applause followed each country's mention. By 11:35 everything came to an end, and they handed us our certificates as we all walked out of our row. Everything was very well organized.

Reporting back with good news, I passed the test and have my oath scheduled for Friday!
Even though I have/had my i751 pending (my wife came with me), they made no reference to it at all (some people I know are interviewed then and there for it as well by a different officer.)
The interview was very straightforward, as soon as I sat down he asked to see my green card, and then just had me read a sentence, write down a sentence, and asked the civics questions (If President and Vice-president can't serve then who becomes president? How many years do we choose a senator for? What did the declaration of independence do? Name one branch of government? What does the president's cabinet do? How many justices are in the Supreme Court?)
I then swore I was telling the truth and briefly went over answers in the n400 application, was asked to check all my details for the oath, and had me sit outside while someone would call me with the date and time for the ceremony. It was about a 30 minute wait, meanwhile I received like 8 text message alerts and emails about updates on my USCIS account.
Now I just need to go back Friday for the oath to the same office! Best of luck to everyone!

it’s been almost 21 months My 10 year gc is pending and now they canceled my interview and I’m not sure when they will schedule the next time.

They asked me for more evidence (I751)
I sent them on July, got the letter from them they will make a decision in 60 days.
I didn’t hear anything from them, called USCIS on September, they sent a letter to me that they will make a decision in 60 days, I called them back and they said they are working on it.
I called them again after 2 weeks, they told they are working on it.
I called them back again after a week, they told me they are trying to make an appt for interview for me.
Didn’t hear anything again, I called them again, and again no clear answer
Then I completely gave up on them!
after around 5 months I got my interview for my citizenship but still after 5 months they couldn’t find a date for my interview in the same office.
My house is around 4 hrs away from my interview office.
that will be terrible if I have to go back there again!!!
I really hope that's not the case... That's why you should go prepared in case they also do your i751 interview that day... bring all your documents and if your spouse can you with you it would probably be a good idea. Sounds to me like many times they might end up doing both interviews for you, even though on the notice we are only told it is the n400 interview.

Wow, I definitely linked you to the incorrect thread, I apologize.
I understand what you are doing as I am on the same boat, but even though they interview you for your n400 they can not fully approve you until the i751 actually gets approved.... your n400 will eventually be left on hold pending until the i751 is approved.
That's where my question is (this time I am linking to the right recent post about it) where the person went to their n400 interview and they were told they would just do the i751 interview 30 mins later... I've read of cases where some people pass the n400 and are left on hold a couple of months until a i751 interview is set up for them

I remember when I went to get my I-551 the first thing I was told was go home and apply for your citizenship!
My citizenship process is in the normal time processing. But for my I-751 I got the letter to submit more evidences, which I did and I got the letter from them that I will get answer from them in 60 days, but it never happened.
I'm just hoping my interview goes smooth. I've been married for over 5 years.
My interview is for next time. I can't wait to be done with this journey of my life.

For the interview, are you planning on taking your significant other? I have my interview a week after you, and I also have my i751 pending...
I read someone's experience also from July applicants who said when they went to the interview they were asked to go into the n400 interview by themselves, and that once they were done another officer conducted a i751 interview (in which they had the significant other go into as well as she had gone to the office with him.) I think it's weird/makes no sense they would do a i751 interview minutes after your n400 interview, but wondering what your plan is. And please share details after you go!
