  1. Hi all,

I applied for my naturalization back in february of this year using the 90 day rule. I just received my interview date and I fly internationally in the evening that day.

If I was to be approved would my greencard be taken off me?

I’m at the Chicago office, I’m not sure whether they offer same day swear in. But if they do does anyone know if I can request the oath to be scheduled by letter?

    Thanks in advance.

PS: I know I could reschedule this but I want to get this done.

Same here. LIN service center. Applied in March 2020, checks were cashed and I received the notice within a week but nothing since then. Other LIN people, what are y'all thinking?

Just for the information, my biometrics appointment arrived on November 16th.

My online status has not changed from case received.

  3. As the beneficiary in the whole process what surprised me most (given I’m from the UK) is just how much positivity I had off my fellow Brits during the process. The K1 visa took almost a year to the day from filing to using. This was mainly due to slight delaying so that finances and loose ends on my side could be cleared up.

We filed for permanent residency in mid Feb and I had the GC in my hand at the end of May. I live in Chicago and have had zero issues from American’s opining on our marriage. Perhaps I’m lucky.

The only thing that irritated me the whole time before and during the K1 process was people talking about how we were going to be living together and how it is different and it might not work out. I just replied that if we don’t try we will never know.

It’s your life, ignore or cut out negative people, they are of no use.

  4. We took the same stuff, plus me being on my wife’s health insurance. We didn’t have much though as we only filed mid feb. Our interview was very quick and the IO took our photos and joint account info (only after we said we had them).

We took everything in a small suitcase, just in case. In the end we needed very little.

Just stay calm, we were approved at interview Monday and it went very smoothly.

Were you notified beforehand that your fiance was allowed to come into the embassy with you?? I completed the online form and requested for Alex to come in with me, but I wasn't sure if I'd receive an email confirming that he's allowed?

Yes, I filled the form out online (if memory serves) and I received an email fairly promptly confirming my fiancee could come along. They check your name against a list outside the embassy so it's a step you'll have to take.

To be honest though, I'm not sure having my fiancee there made any difference, other than keeping my anxiety in check.

Hmmm... You usually need a US Social Security Number to get a credit card. And you usually need credit first. Like from a car loan or student loan.

Also, AmEx is REALLY hard to get! I suggest Capital One. I have been in the USA for 8 years and am a citizen. I STILL do not qualify for a basic AmEx, with a credit score of 771!

Yeah I had a SSN. It was using their global transfer scheme so my lack of credit in the US wasn’t an issue. I can now build some up though.

  7. I took a well laid out file with all the required documents and then evidence of a couple of additional trips which had happened since the initial application. My fiancee was with me (we confirmed with the embassy beforehand).

All I would say is make sure you take every scrap of required documentation (originals are fine because they are returned) and any additional evidence that's occurred since the original application (we were not asked for this info).

The most important info you take is the financial support stuff. The interview itself, if you're a legit couple, simply don't worry about it.

  8. I will just put this up here as it was one of my main worries about moving to the US.

I just got issued my first US credit card today. Anyone who has been here will tell you this can be a real pain to get since you start with no credit history.

My background: I'm from the UK and have gone through the whole K1 process and am now married and adjusting towards my first greencard (the 2 year conditional one).

This info assumes you can get an American Express credit card back home and they allow you to use their global transfer system with it.

Firstly: Get an american express card, preferably one with no annual fees and start using it - You have to have the card at least 3 months I believe to be considered.

Secondly: Make sure you keep this card in good standing and use it for as much as possible whilst you're still in your home country.

Third: Once you're in the US with your K1 visa, get your SSN ASAP.

Forth: After you're married phone up the American Express customer service and get them to direct you to global transfer, they will guide you through all the steps. The reason I say wait until you are married is that you can give your spouse's salary as other income you can reasonably expect access to, which should help the application.

The phonecall took me 30 minutes, I waited almost 3 months to do this and wish I hadn't put it off. If you want a trouble free way of getting access to a way to build your credit rating I would highly recommend this.

Also just for reference I was approved today, the card has a credit limit comparable to back in the UK and has good terms. Yesterday I was declined for a store card at a well known large retailer. I don't know what I would have done without this as no-one is going to touch you without credit.

    -Reggie.
