  1. I was wondering if there is a good water filter I could buy and send to my wife's family. (or have them buy there) They live out in the provinces and the water quality is not the best.

So I was wondering if there was a filter that would provide good-quality water from the local tap water? I thought it would be better for them to have pure water, plus it keep me from having to buy lots of bottled water when we go visit.

I don't really know the quality of the water where they live, but everyone has always told me to buy drinking water when I go.

Also, if we ever decide to build a place there are there any good water systems we could install?

  2. After all the recent events involving the ferries in the Philippines, would you ride one?

I had been thinking about taking the ferry from Manila to Cagayan de Oro the next time my wife and I travel home. I thought it could be fun and a way to see more of the country, but now my wife is a bit nervous about the idea of spending time on a ferry.

    What do you think?

(Since this is a Philippines question, I thought I would put it in the local forum.)

  3. Where Kathlene's family lives there is NO LAND PHONES, so no internet service.

So unless wireless internet or satellite is reasonable, no Skype, Magic Jack, etc.

The only options I have found are the bag phone companies (flat rate for calls to and from a provided bag phone), or the dedicated cell phone if service is available there.

  4. I see all these ads for a 'low monthly rate to the Philippines' for unlimited calling. Has anyone used them?

I see some which gives the family in the Philippines a dedicated cell phone and you can call back and forth as much as you want.

There are no land lines to where Kathlene's family lives so that is the way we would have to go.

No land phone means no internet acess as well unless you get the wireless service from Smart and I don't think they reach there yet either.

Or should I just invest in phone company stock and let my wife drive up the profits?

  5. Don't forget to tip your Dish Network or Direct TV tech...a $20 tip is always welcomed!!! When I don't get a tip from a cx I never leave them my phone number for problems or questions...that will teach 'em, see how they like being on the phone talking to someone from India or the Philippines after being on hold for 20 minutes and waiting 3-4 days for me to be dispatched out for the service issue!!!!

So you are saying the monthly lease fee for the equipment, plus the monthly maintenance fee I pay to fix the equipment I lease to receive their service is not enough already!

I think giving the satellite company over a $1,000 bucks a year should be enough to keep my equipment in good condition.

 Sorry, I just think a company should be the one to pay its employees.

  6. OK, maybe it's a guy thing, but I don't understand tipping a hair stylist. Most are self-employed, so they should be paid a decent amount per person. I realize the salon gets a percentage, but I would rather pay a dollar or two more for the service than be expected to pay a tip.

BTW, it only takes about 5 minutes to cut my hair anyway, so I think $13 bucks is high enough!

Also, tip buckets at takeout windows? Another excuse for the business owner to cut their pay? Pay the people what they are worth, don't expect me to make sure your employees make a living wage!

I think tips should be a reward, not something needed to make sure the server can pay his rent!

  7. I know Kevin! He lives about 30 minutes from me. In fact, I re-strung his guitar before he went to Chicago for the audition.

(I work at a local music store here in Paducah, about 30 miles from Mayfield)

  8. Been using Xoom for a couple of years, after having to wait one time for the "processing" I have had no trouble at all and the money is ready in less than an hour using the value service.

    (Your mileage may vary)

  9. Plot synopsis:

Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is the executive editor-in-chief of a book publishing company, Colden Books, who forces her assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her in order to avoid being deported to Canada. He grudgingly accepts in order to get the position of editor within the company. When the government investigates, the two are forced to spend the weekend with his parents in Alaska in order to sell the lie, but start to fall genuinely in love as they spend time together.

I saw Sandra Bullock promoting this on the Today Show this morning. Nothing like making fun of immigration to make me laugh!

    What do you think?

  10. You know what, if you don't have mountains of credit card debt, a $20,000+ car, and reasonable rent/house payment you can live quite well on the 'poverty' level.

I have a career that I really enjoy, but it doesn't pay like a big-time CEO, but I do fine, but someone has to do the lower paying work or how would we get by?

I am in the music business and have been for almost 30 years, I have had experiences many people would kill for and have seen a lot places in the US and Canada and gotten paid for it.

Perhaps the only thing I really worry about is health care, but a major illness can take everything from even a 'well-off' family.

Did I make a decision to marry someone from out of the country, no, but sometimes life will hand us things outside our normal circle.
