  1. I am so happy that I passed the Driving Test at the DPS in Carrolton, Texas! I felt so nervous during the test even though I had been driving in the Philippines. I am really thankful to my driving instructor for giving me tips and the do's and don't's while driving in Texas. And congratulations to Aniostar's wife too! She made it as well! Congratulations Queenie! We had the same lady driving instructor. And by the way, you really have to be early at the Driving License Office for the test though they open their office at 7:30am because there is a line which starts as early as 5:30am and if there are already around 25 people or so, they cut off the line. Be sure you bring with you your Instruction Permit, your SSN and your green card/EAD and your application for the test so you can take the test on that day. The test is more or less 15 minutes. Keep your passport handy too though they don't usually ask for it, but they did asked for mine (after I went back to their office after passing the test to pay for my Driver's License fee) to verify because somebody had mistakenly put me in their system as a minor. I have to show her again my SSN and green card.

The chilly weather makes it more stressful. It was below freezing point and there were some snowflakes falling. We had to wake up very early and line up outside the office exposed to the very cold weather. There were already about 12 people lining up around 6am. Queenie and I were the first 2. By 7:30am, they let us in for some paper works. The lady who got our paper (Queenie's and mine) couldn't believe that we will make it since we were only issued our permits 2 days before the test but Queenie and I had been driving for years (however, not in the U.S.) and during the 2 days we were with our Instructor, our instructor taught us really well. Well, this lady at the License office was just so judgmental and told us that she hoped that our instructor taught us well and she hopes we pass the test and told her colleagues to really take a look at this at the testing area. She made this so loud for everyone to hear; isn't that discouraging? We just kept silent. At the testing area, our instructor reminded us on the salient points. The test started at 8:00am. Queenie was the first to take the test. Then, I followed. We both made it. And we had been praying very hard and we did our best! Thank you, Lord! After you pass the test and your documents reconcile, they will let you sign..they will get your left and right thumbprints..and get your photo...and you pay $24...they will give then give you your Texas DPS temporary permit...your driver's license will arrive in the mail in 2-4 weeks.

  2. Hi Jo!

I just read this thread today and I'm so sorry to hear about how your daughter's petition turned out. I'm sure that this is a tough time for your family. Just hang in there and be strong! I'm sure that there's a way to turn the USCIS' decision and let your daughter stay here for good. I'm hoping and praying for the best! God bless!

Thanks Hershey ("Ace") for the support...still holding here...Congratulations on your AOS approval! You will have your green card soon.

    Godspeed,

    Jo (F)

  3. We live in the Frisco/Dallas area...can't get even a driver's permit without the green card...you really need to wait for your permanent resident card before they issue you a permit and state ID as well...

    Good luck and Godspeed,

Ummm you need to refer to my post above and the Texas DMV site. An EAD is all that is required for a Texas DL/ID. If you have difficulties with a local member of staff ask for a supervisor and refer them to the published requirements.

Hi, EAD is definitely ok for a Texas DL/ID. I saw that the OP (K1) is in Texas. I assumed they will get married soon and if they are within the Dallas District, they could file AOS thru the DORA Program without filing for an EAD. The green card arrives sooner thru this program, thus it is not practical to file and pay for EAD. But if they wanted to file both, and whichever got approved first, it can be used to apply for a TX DL/ID.

    God bless,
