    Thanks!

    Maybe? I wouldn't be surprised with a anything anymore with RFEs....they tend to be sending them for small stuff recently. As for me, I have an email from their support explicitly stating that they are not an IMB:

    Congratulations on your engagement!

    @geowrian Sorry about your RFE glad they are now working on your case. So, did you work by your received date or by your Notice date  as shown on the hard copy?

    You are welcome. While convalidation follows the Rite of Marriage, no one should choose to have anything other than a marriage within the Catholic Church. Convalidation is the way the Church makes an illicit marriage a valid sacrament of the Church. To marry outside the Church. without permission of the bishop causes one to be in a state of grave sin.

    Since one must be in a state of grace, in order to have one's marriage convalidated, one must receive absolution and the priest would advise the couple to live as "brother and sister" until the convalidation takes place.

    I would not advise anyone to enter into a civil marriage, when with some patience and planning, a sacramental marriage can be celebrated.

    @Kosi Wahala You are so spot on! Thank you so very much we will go ahead and begin the marriage prep and follow through with the sacramental marriage.

    In many places convalidation is known as regularization. It is how the Church makes an illicit marriage sacramental. It may take place within a Mass, our outside of the Mass (depending upon the preference of the couple, and whether or not both are Catholic). The priest follows the Rite of Marriage - it's not just a "let's fix this" sort of thing - it's a Catholic marriage.  It can be celebrated as a normal marriage, or it can be a more reserved ceremony...that is up to the couple.

    @Kosi Wahala Many thanks for this.

    Also, if you decide to marry outside the Church, first, most priests will require you to go through Pre-Cana before convalidating your marriage. FYI - there are considerations concerning state of grace and reception of the Holy Eucharist, until you have your marriage regularized.
    We just completed our Pre-Cana for the convalidation of our marriage - Again, you can PM me if you wish.

    @Kosi Wahala This is the first time I have heard of convalidation of a Marriage. I have looked it up and am getting conflicting answers. Is convalidation same as a normal Catholic Marriage ceremony? If it is indeed different, then we would opt for the Catholic Marriage.

  5. Hi we are in the same situation as you are. But in our case we are both Catholics and we plan to do the court wedding first. We clearly understand the factors you have listed because we discussed all of those things before deciding that it will be best to be legally married before the church wedding. We have spoken to the priest in the church that we hope to be married and all all he asked for was that our baptism certificates not older than 6 months. Because of the timeline of K1 we plan to fix the date of our church wedding date after the legal marriage. Also we have to a marriage prep called Pre-Cana but the time frame varies from Parish to Parish. If you have any further questions please fell free to ask us.

    @amillimo Hi, CSC is the acronym for Carlifonia Service Center. Hope your NOA2 comes soon.

    Thank u. I had read from some site that no need for me to update the foreign police clearance if am not currently living there..

    My interview will b next week.. huhuhu. Now am confused

    Hi Jill,

    Don't worry your interview will go great. Go to the website the consulate and look up the instructions for K1 visa applications. Somewhere in the check list it gives some information about the police certificates. It differs according to embassies.

    God bless you too

    I would get a police certificate just to be safe. Part of me thinks you would be fine without one, because, like you, I read it as continuously living somewhere for more than 12 months, which you did not do. Combined over time, however, you did exceed that 12 month limit obviously, so it might be better to have it than not...at least that way if it's asked of you, you have it, and if not, from another commenter it seems to not be expensive to obtain, which is good news as the UK certificate is a rip off <_< :lol:

    Pure rip off?? I paid over £53 for it, couldn't believe i was paying for the same thing when I got the Spanish one done ?

    Hi all, thanks for this advice forum and the useful answers all over, really helping. I have a question to add...

    From the K-1 Visa instructions, I understand that I will be required to present a police certificate from the UK. That's fine, I can get that. But also, certificates from  'countries where you have lived for more than 12 months since the age of 16'. Is such a certificate required do you think in my case:

    I'm a UK citizen, living in the UK until aged 25;

    Moved to Spain for 9 months;

    UK for 3 months;

    Then 11.5 months in Spain (With occasional trips back to the UK, and never a registered resident);

    1 month in the US;

    Spain for another 9 months before returning to the UK.

    I'm unsure if the certificate is needed if I didn't ever stay abroad for 12 continuous months. And if it is required because of my living in Spain cumulatively for more than 12 months, does that count as I was always considered a resident of the UK, i.e. only residing in Spain temporarily for work.

    Thanks, and good luck to everyone going through this process,

    Hi pov5,

    You sure need a police report from Spain and its pretty easy to get. It cost 3.70€. You can find all that you need to get it via this link.

    If you have any further questions just let me know.

    All the best!

  10. Hello everyone,

    So my boyfriend and I met 7 months ago online and we would be meeting for the first time this summer in Germany in June for one week and we plan to file in August. What are we to keep in mind as we file? Which USCIS office are we to file at? What do we need to include whilst assembling our visa packet? We have communicated these past months via calls on Facebook, chats, Snail mail( Letters by post), emails, Whats App chats and we would be taking enough pictures when we meet. Are these enough evidence of an ongoing relationship? How patient do we nee to be for the process to be completed?

    Many thanks for helping us out.
