  1. hi everyone,

i have a weird little question:

will i be able to bring wrapped christmas gifts into canada when driving from the USA?

i want to wrap all the gifts for my friends and family before we get there, but will there be a problem with that at the border?

just wondering if anyone can share their experiences.

have you ever been asked to unwrap gifts so they can see what is inside?

because that would be a huge pain in the #######.

i hope i'm not wasting my time by wrapping all these things.

  2. born and raised in a tiny rural town in manitoba, then moved to winnipeg once i turned 18.

i lived in winnipeg for seven years, now i am in iowa.

    i miss winnipeg A LOT.

  5. i just got my K-3 visa last monday and then crossed the border yesterday.

while i was getting my I-94 and such, the border officer told me that i had to get advance parole in order to leave the country.

    is this true?

i told him that i was under the impression that this was not the case for K-3 visa's.

he was like, "no, no, no...all visa's need advance parole."

i swear to god i read on the uscis website that K-3 visa holders do not need to apply for advance parole.

    i am a bit confused.

i am beginning to wonder how much do border officers really know??

    Hello,

May be he thought that you have filed for the AOS but being on a K-3 status you can move out without the AP. The K-3 is good for 2 years to travel and work.

so can i travel to canada eventhough i have not applied to adjust my status?

i also want to work, so i am going to fill out the I-765.

can i do this right now?

or do i have to adjust my status and apply for work authorization at the same time?

  6. okay, here is my story:

i just arrived in the USA on monday with my K-3 visa.

i have not applied for anything yet - no EAD, no AOS.

and all i wanna do is go home to canada for christmas.

can i do this even though i have not applied to adjust my status?

i know that K-3ers don't need advance parole, but i thought it said something along the line of no advance parole is needed only if your AOS is pending.

    am i correct?

    i am so confused.

you see, this is what i thought too.

but then the border officer told me that i had to apply for advance parole everytime i wanted to leave the USA.

i understand that he was misinformed, but now i am worried.

i am crossing that same border...i am just scared that i won't be able to re-enter the USA after the holidays.

  7. Good question, biometrics are taken at a sub office or District Office.

Iowa lists Des Moines as its Sub Office and Omaha NE as District Office

South Dakota there is no Sub Office, the District Office is Saint Paul MN.

So it is a toss up. Omaha, or Des Moines, depending on which the USCIS considers you to be closer to.

ooooh, thanks so much for your reply!

we live like 2 hours from Omaha, NE!

you saved my life...it won't be a long drive at all for us!

  8. hi there

as i found out when it came to my biometrics .. you cant choose where you go for your fingerprinting...they will send you a notice and they allocate the closest office to you...i am in toldedo ohio but i went to detroit michigan which is about an hour away..i was expecting cleveland lol

    good luck

    kath

    thanks so much.

i just hope that we don't have to drive hours and hours.

i wonder if there is a place to go in south dakota?

  11. Shanny,

If a K-visa applicant requires a sponsor (most do, but some may have adequate financial resources of their own), the consular officer may ask for an I-134 from the proposed sponsor if the officer thinks it will be helpful. There is no absolute requirement that I-134 be provided, its use is at the discretion of the consular officer.

I'm surprised that someone at the consulate was able to tell you that I-134 is not going to be required in your case unless that person has seen your financial information and is also the person who will be processing your visa application.

    Yodrak

    hello everyone.

i have my k-3 interview in two weeks at the vancouver, canada consulate.

i emailed them a question about the I-134 as it did not show up anywhere in my package 3.

they emailed me back and said that my husband (the US citizen) did not need to fill the I-134 out.

    why is that?

howcome some do and some don't?

    i do not understand.

    thanks for the replies, everyone.

yodrak, could they possibly tell one's financial situation by doing a background check on them?

i'm sure that one form we sent out months back had my husband's employer and what he did for a living on it.

could they just go by that?

i am also printing out the email that they sent me as proof for why we did not fill a I-134 out.

i'm just scared that we are gonna get there, they ask where it is, and then i get denied for not having one.

but it did not say ANYWHERE on package three that we needed one.

the checklist is where they tell you, correct?
