For those with UK food withdrawal symptoms, I noticed the other day when shopping in a Publix supermarket that they have a British section in their "Ethnic Foods" aisle. I'm not that fussed about missing Brit foods, other than a select few specifically British items, but others mourning Rich Tea Biscuits, Branston Pickle, HP Sauce etc. might want to check out Publix.

Once more unto the breach dear friends, once more; Or close up the wall with our English dead......errrrrrrrmmm
Fear not the jitters and worry not what have I done. The US and UK is truly two nations divided by a common language. Even though your senses have been assaulted by American culture on television and McDonald's has taken over the UK there is quite a gulf. In saying all that, embrace your American cousins strange ways of doing things. Re-learn how to spell. Let your palette adjust to American tastes.
As for paid vacation days (see what I did there), it really depends on your employer and the type of work you do.
I work in local government, so we generally follow how the federal government does it. I earn seven hours of paid time off for every two weeks worked. This increases with my years of service. Healthcare is subsidized by my employer. Also remember you are entitled to get tax credit through the Affordable Care Act (setting aside any political view you may have on this) if your employer doesn't do health insurance.Whereas if you work in a dead end job on minimum wage, paid time off is a pipe dream.
Believe me you will adjust and in about 5 years you could be a US citizen.
    Good luck
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

    Hey,
I did my readiness form before my medical (about a week before my medical which was in August last month). I just had my interview yesterday. They will only contact you for an interview once you have completed BOTH the medical and the readiness form. Once you submit both, it would be about a month.

I have another few months before I can make the move to the States, but I just want to say how great the majority of this thread is. I started reading it and saw a couple of posts that gave me the jitters (the 'what have I done' response, and one poster who seemed to hate everything) but carrying on I remembered all the reasons ,apart from the obvious one, that I'm excited about going. I'm still worried about healthcare, and Tina's still worried I'll miss my paid holiday entitlement (possibly a valid point) but they seem pretty practical things and manageable. I like how most people's issues on this thread seem to revolve around food or the news, and nothing extremely major like not fitting in or being cripplingly homesick.
Looking forward to adding something here in not too long.

Do any of you guys actually look back on the time from proposal to spouse to now and end up feeling really chuffed with yourself?
I had a really hard hitting (in the best way) moment today when I accepted my first stateside job offer, about a week after officially getting the authorisation and I had this massive rush, almost a play by play of everything we've gone through with our 8 month K1. To visiting the states, meeting families, paperwork, getting married. Right the way through to my pen hitting that employment contract.
I don't know about you guys, but when I look through what has been arguably the hardest time I've ever had, I'm just really happy and proud of both Aubrey and I for getting through it and being where we are.
I know this is a bit off topic but I wanted to share!

I printed a screen shot of my CEAC "Ready" status with the LND number showing, just for something to give them as I didn't get my letter from the embassy until a week after my medical.

People have been without a letter and were not sent away.
The LND number comes from the embassy to the beneficiary in the instruction letter. It also comes to the petitioner in a letter from NVC saying they have forwarded your file to the embassy. NVC is slow to send those letters out.

I saw a few people who still haven't got their case number and the worry about the speech they give you. They don't track how many times you call as far as I'm aware and it doesn't hurt to call in the morning and at night. I called the day it was received from the NVC before getting on my flight and they said they didn't have it. When I called after getting to Australia, they informed me it was put in the system the day I had called, just later in the evening apparently. They had the numbers for me when I called on Monday and it was shipped out Tuesday night (day after numbers were assigned). I tracked our package on DHL and it is currently enroute to the Sydney embassy with an expected delivery date of the 21st. There is a large possibility it will be at the embassy before I leave back to the US next week.
Advice for those having issues with the NVC, the longest it took me to get to the que was about 10 minutes and the longest I was on hold to talk to someone was an hour and a half. Don't hang up! Eventually you will get through! Patience and persistence will get you the info you need. We were processed and shipped out in less than a month, even though they constantly preached to me every time I called about 35 days to put in system and another month to get a number. Don't give up! I would recommend calling later in the evening, about two hours before they close as the steps with ours all took place later in the evening.

Crossing my fingers that my NOA2 will be today (or at least this week). My timeline estimated July 28-30. At this point I'd even prefer an RFE so at least I knew they were working on it.

This is a great thread. I'm not as far along as most of you as I don't have my K-1 yet (waiting on NOA2 any day now...) but I have spent long periods (6 months) in the US with only brief trips back home. I get a it fed up about not finding the exact foods I want and certainly notice how expensive it can be compared to the UK if you're one that buys the cheap basics. I don't want to talk about the chocolate situation because it is upsetting!!! And high-fructose corn syrup in EVERYTHING (I have fructose intollerance which makes it a nightmare). I am pretty petrified about health care too. Being able to just go to the doctor when you really need to without having to think about whether you can afford to pay for it is certainly a blessing.
But there are some great things about the US that are certainly not in the UK. We love the outdoors and the weather is just incomparable to Northern England. The sun shines all the time in Virginia. We can drive to the mountains and walk for miles and miles on tiny trails surrounded by miles and miles of forest without signs and fences. We get two Christmas's with Thanksgiving! Fuel is cheaper so you can afford to take more trips out. There is real wilderness that is accessible - we lived in Scotland for a few years and got to go to some amazing places, but I've never been in a large forest in the UK or one that didn't feel manicured. You get much larger houses for your money compared to the UK. The weather is good enough to grow awesome vegetables and lots of them. Fruit tastes better. I can't wait to have a garden. Porches don't really exist in the UK, or at least sitting out each evening in perfect weather. Crickets sing in the summer and you can fall asleep listening to them.
I will miss pubs very very much (although local breweries are awesome!), and I will miss English Christmas's, but the latter is just sentimental and would happen if I were living anywhere that wasn't in the UK.
BTW, I'm in Canada right now, working up in the boreal forest. Oh. My. God. the mosquitoes!!!! and black flies!!! It's like something out of a horror movie. Absolutely beautiful place though, I saw a lynx the other day and raspberries and blueberries galore
