I have talked to so many people in the process and there does not seem to be a reason for the difference in processing times. It probably comes down to field office. I know for a fact that the Boston Field office is moving quickly as several people on this site as well as others I know have gotten their citizenship within 4 months of applying (myself included). However, a coworker of mine who lives elsewhere in the state applied last November and has his oath ceremony next week. We have very similar backgrounds, work at the same place, etc etc. It does seem to take less than a year overall at the longest. So hold tight everyone, it's gonna be over soon.

I read over the weekend that some people are still getting the envelope with a letter from President Obama. My ceremony in Indianapolis did not have a letter at all !.

 

Tempted to go after USCUS and request my letter. as it seems that there has been no replacement put in since the new president came into power.

 

If anyone is in the know. I would be most grateful.

HI Gary,

I did not receive a Welcome Pack from the current or former President. There was no letter or video at my ceremony. Apparently there was an oversight recently where letters from Obama were given to new citizens and in some instances the welcome video was of Obama. The current President has not recorded a welcome video nor has his administration put together a letter. Therefore, if anyone receives a letter or see a video currently, it will be of former President Obama.

It's finally over! I'm now a citizen of the great experiment that is the United States of America! I'm honored to have the opportunity to help make her a more perfect union.

The ceremony was wonderful, and for me a bit emotional and surreal! The ceremony was scheduled to begin at 12pm, so I arrived at 11:30am and they sent the citizens to the front of the room while family members sat in the seats behind (much like a graduation). We had to fill out our N-455 form before we arrived (it's literally 6 boxes to check NO on all the questions and sign). We were called row by row to check in (they collect the forms and green cards). This took about 45 minutes for the 202 citizenship applicants. We then waited another half an hour for the judge to arrive. It began around 1:30pm. It was a lovely ceremony with short speeches, national anthem singing by a state trooper and so forth. We all stood and gave the oath of allegiance as well as pledging allegiance to the flag. And then it was over.

The judge left and we the family members were told to leave and row by row we were called up to receive our naturalization certificates.

I know everyone is waiting, but it will be so worth the wait when you get to the oath ceremony and realize your actually an American. The part that made me a bit emotional was reading my naturalization certificate where it said 'country of former nationality'. That's when I said.... damn, I'm an American now.

@sio05 Thank you for updating the chart. Unfortunately, no, we do not have any kids. We were sitting close to the window #7. I think our overlap was actually minimal as you mentioned your scheduled time was 1045am and you had your interview around 0130pm. Ours was scheduled for 0145pm and we arrived around 0120pm. As you mentioned, they were running way behind on scheduled interview time. We waited for about two hours after scheduled time for ours and stayed late to take passport photos, sign them, return them and get our Oath ceremony scheduled. The ask for photos was unexpected and was a major setback. Thanks God we were allowed and able to produce them the same day. We were also advised that our cases would be put on hold (no action) because of missing photos. So, again, March filers, take these photos with you, just in case. $15 saved just not worth it. If you plan to apply for a passport and nobody asks for them at the interview, you'll be able use them.

 

According to my co-workers that went through the same procedure recently, such wait times are expected from Boston FO. I was told it could take about four hours on the day of the interview to wrap it up. However, looking at the pace Boston FO processes such cases, they start looking like heroes to us  You could tell by the faces of IOs, they were pretty tired closer to the EOD. From what I heard and witnessed myself, it's pretty typical for this FO to schedule Oath Ceremony and give you a letter with the date on the day of your interview. I was asked if I wanted to wait for the letter with the date in the office or get it by US mail as we were getting close to like 5pm at that time, I chose the former, of course.

 

 

 

 

OK! We were sitting close to each other. I was by window 8. I'm surprised they asked for photos because they didn't ask me for photos. This is just weird. Either you want photos from everyone or no one at all. I don't get it. I'm glad you were able to get the photos though and everything done on the same day. It's good to know that this FO does the same day oath ceremony scheduling.

@reginaglenn Thank you! I was also expecting a 30-60 wait. However, a friend of mine today told me he had a July 4th oath ceremony and they just changed it to July 26th so I hope mine stays the same. In any event, it will still be very quick even if delayed.

@casualuser That is a very good question. I really am convinced that there is zero formula to it. I have been in the process with several people along the way. Some got their conditional GC 2 months before I did, and now I have my citizenship before them although we applied the same time or they applied before me. So I'm not sure what speeds it up except an officer who just makes a move on a case for whatever reason. But there must be some reason and I don't know what it is. So maybe I'll be the first data point. I did not leave the country right before or after receiving my 10 yr GC. So there were no new international trips for them to process. I have never been arrested, I've paid all my taxes. No traffic violations. I have not moved since I started the whole GC process. Same job. Basically, nothing has changed in 3 years.  I haven't gotten any new 'comingling' so there was no kids to talk about, no new joint accounts of any sort. I did make sure to put a cover letter with all my applications outlining what was in my packages. I do think organization must help the officers find what they want quickly. We filed all our tax returns jointly and I also included a copy of this year's tax returns from turbo tax (tax transcript wasn't available yet). That's all I can think of to share.

My Naturalization Interview Experience

Interview Date: June 29, 2017/ Thursday

Time: 10:45 am

Local Office : Boston, MA

My company: Went solo

Documents with me: Tax transcripts for the past 4 years, my passport, spouse's passport and birth certificate, my GC, 4 years of apt leases (including recent one), some recent utility bills, state ID, a copy of my N400 application.

Arrived around 10:15am (30 minutes before my appointment time as requested by the interview letter). I walked in and there was a lady who looked at my letter and told me to give it to the person sitting behind a particular window. The person took the number and I was told to sit down and wait till I was called. I waited, and waited and waited. Apparently they were short staff this morning, so my wait went for 3 hours. I took an approximate count and there were about 120 persons in the room. Some were with lawyers and spouses, so about 75 actual interviewees by my estimation. I had time to do this because I wasn't called until 1:30pm (3 hours later). The lady at the front desk had commented to me that the numbers have increased significantly since you know who took office.

I followed the immigration officer to his office and he asked for my passport, driver's license and GC. I gave them to him and he asked me my birth date and address. Then he literally took out this YUUUGE folder (about 5 inches thick) and I realized that was my entire file. He then went through the N400 with me asking questions like - birth date, address, job info, how many times I've left the country, etc etc. simple stuff. Then he went over a bunch of the yes/no questions - have you been arrested, have you ever not paid taxes, etc etc. He then asked me for a copy of my latest lease.

He then said it was time for the test and he asked me the following questions:

Name two US holidays

Who was the first President

What does the constitution do

Who is the governor of your state

What age can citizens vote

What is one right of a citizen

Then he gave me a sheet with 3 sentences and told me to read the second one. He then gave me a piece of paper and told me to write the following on the second line - American Indians were here first

Then he got quite cordial and starting asking me more relaxed questions while he clicked away on his screen. We talked about the fact that we were both teachers and complained about Boston traffic. Then he abruptly said  - I see nothing wrong with this application. And he printed a form and told me go to the lobby and wait till they called my name.

So apparently today (I'm not sure if its a daily practice) if you're approved, you wait and they set up an oath ceremony date and they give you a form. So I waited for about 15 minutes, I was called up, given a form that I will need to fill out the night before I go to the ceremony. The form asks questions about things post interview (are you still married, have you been arrested since, etc). My date is July 12th (Less than 2 weeks!). The people ahead of me were getting July 6th then they switched to July 12th (i guess the 6th got filled up). So in two weeks I'll be at my oath ceremony.

I know this does not make many people feel better, but my citizenship process has been incredibly fast. I attribute that to the efficiency of the Boston office (although I had to wait 3 hours, it was worth it).

I never got a text or any form of notification that i was in line. I just randomly checked my case status on the uscis website and it had changed to 'in line'. Which is weird since everyone else seems to be getting messages. I only got one text/email and it was when my NOA was on the way.

It's weird.... We both got our greencard on the same day and we applied for citizenship within a week of each other and I just got 'case in line for interview' although your biometrics was done way before me. I was surprised to check uscis.gov and after typing in my number saw that I was in line on the 27th. I'm guessing the only difference must be the workload in Philly vs Boston. Let's hope you get something this week.
