  1. One issue related to this is that I wanted to wait until after I submitted the I-129F before announcing our engagement to the world (bc I would like to do it in person to people who are far away right now). Of course by the time we had the interview, we could have lots of proof of a public engagement. If I am understanding both of you, this is not necessary at all for a successful I-129A. Right?

Correct. For I-129F, you ONLY need to prove you met in the last two years, NOT prove you have a bona fide relationship.

We did the same thing and did not tell our families of engagement until after submitting the I-129F.

  2. From what I understand, you don't have to disclose anything you aren't using as evidence that you can support your fiance. If you have a high enough income and/or enough assets in your bank account, then there is no need to disclose the investment account. However, this might not be true if you are using the investment income as evidence... I'm in a similar situation so I'd love to know the answer to this, too!

  3. Abby88, that is some amazing fate right there!! Sounds like he must have changed his mind about you being just a rich girl :)

1kiki, very cute, congratulations! (btw your username reminds me of that line in Shakira's song "Loca")

Tina and Johan, that is awesome, I've never even heard of a pen-pal site! they ought to link directly to visajourney hahaha

Ben + Michelle, yeah people don't typically go looking for a LDR but you can't stop love

My fiance and I met in a competitive online video game. About 3 years ago, I hadn't played it in months and one day I was just really bored and decided what the hell... I'll play a match. When I got in I heard everyone on my team speaking Spanish, which I was learning in college at the time, so I kept in touch with them to practice my Spanish. I got to know one of the guys really well and realized he was ideal for me. And the rest is history :)

  4. Your father is retired and unemployed? He receives no retirement income at all and lives solely off of his savings?

Correct, although I guess he does have a little bit of income from stocks and Social Security.

They tend to understand about being a student and take into account that you can get a decent paying job once your graduate. If you have 5 times (about $100k) in assets that can be turned to cash within a year without undue hardship to you, then that could be enough to get you by without a co-sponsor. However, it will be entirely up to the CO to make that decision. They will look at the totality of your case and decide if they believe your fiance(e) will become a public charge or not.

    Okay, thanks.

  5. I'm a USC w/ Mexican fiance, and I just submitted my I-129F forms today. Yay! Thinking ahead to the Affidavit of Support...

I'm a graduate student and I've never been employed, but I have plenty of assets, WELL over 5x the poverty limit for my household. And I do have a bit of income from stocks, around $5k.

Based on this advice, I won't need a co-sponsor, right? My dad is willing to co-sponsor but he too is unemployed (retired), so he could only co-sponsor based on savings. Should I have him co-sponsor just in case? Just checking because I'm worried about it looking bad that I've never been employed, not just currently unemployed.

  6. Looks like I'll include the supplement I wrote then, if it's about meeting in person.

I wish I still had my boarding passes but I had no idea I would need them at the time :( I'm really hoping it's enough evidence because it's basically all I have.

I'm including all pages of the passport just to be sure, but I guess I'll put a sticky note on it to point to the entry stamps.

Thank y'all for the advise :)

  7. With the following documents for the I-129F, am I good to go? Any worry I will get a RFE? (I am a USC with Mexican fiance)

    • cashier's cheque for $340 to United States Department of Homeland Security
    • e-notification form
    • cover letter (VJ example format)
    • I129F form
    • I129F supplement for "how we met"
    • photocopy of my birth certificate, front and back
    • my G325A w/ photo to specifications
    • fiance's G325A w/ photo to specifications
    • my letter of intent to marry
    • fiance's letter of intent to marry
    • proof of having met: photocopies of all pages of my passport, showing I went to Mexico
    • proof of having met: flight confirmation emails (since I don't have the tickets anymore), w/ important info highlighted
    • proof of having met: 4 photos of us together, 1 from 2012 and 3 from 2013, all labeled properly
    • proof of ongoing relationship: Skype chat correspondence, 4 examples from the past year, plus English translation (which I certified)

Am I forgetting anything? Everything is signed and dated. Just need a quick OK if nothing looks wrong.

    Thanks for the help!

  8. My fiance does not "go by" his whole, long name (two first names and two last names -- he's Mexican). He goes by his second given name and his first (paternal) family name. For example, if his name were Juan Ricardo Garcia Lopez, he would go by Ricardo Garcia. In all our emails and chat logs I do NOT refer to him by his whole given name nor his first given name -- rather, I call him only his second given name, as he is known to all friends and family. Is this a problem? I listed it under "Additional names used" on the G325a form, but is that enough? Should I write a clarification/explanation in the cover letter?

Thanks for the help, sorry if this is a repeat question :x

  9. Hi everyone, I'm so happy to have found this site. Anything involving official documents, government procedures, etc makes me super nervous and I don't know anyone who has been through the system. I've already found answers to a dozen of my questions poking around on these forums.

I'm a graduate student in Oregon and my partner is a photographer in Mexico. We met online playing videogames a few years ago. Sometimes I scare myself thinking about how unlikely it is that we would have met -- we just happened to join the same public Left 4 Dead match and, well, the rest is history. I love the digital age.
